The stores we went to were: Dollar Tree, 99 cent Store (that’s where we got the fresh vegetables), and Family Dollar. This was a fun challenge but it also shows that it always come down to heart and technique not fancy ingredients. :)
Yo this is such a amazing video nice job man!
Why don’t you like the garlic from the jar ? Just curious because we use it quite a bit at home lol
I am going to try a wheat free (allergies 😢) version of that reverse canned 🍑 🎂! Thanks for the inspiration, Josh!
Houston, Texas. Never heard of country style ribs in the land of barbecue. Well I'll be
@@travisschulz6342 You store garlic in a jar like that and buy it from the store like that, it loses both flavor and freshness and the little 'bite' that it has while fresh. It becomes blander and takes on a different sort of flavor that isn't always what you want, and you need MORE of it to get the same effect as you'd get normally.
He coulda just microwaved the ramen and given it to me without telling me and I woulda been like wow you’re a master chef
papa Weissman meets papa titan
I would absolutely love if you guys got Josh on to teach yall how to cook something!
@@chancewilson4078 Or a 10MPH would be something.
Who actually microwaves ramen? That's not gonna make it soft
Did Allie forget to switch accounts again
i really like this series of cheap cooking without all the fancy equipment
aka rice cooker and a colander to wash your rice.
he stole this idea from will osman
I love his content but $50 is not cheap. I spend that much on 2 week’s groceries (I’m in college)
Same. As much as it's interesting and cool to watch, what am I gonna do with a recipe that uses beluga caviar, a sous vide and and ice cream maker? 💀
@@parkerallen2291 Damn, tell me your secrets! I spend $50 in a week, but I also try to actually eat healthy so idk if that makes a difference.
I grew up with my family shopping from the dollar store for anything they can and the fresh meat and veggies would be through a really cheap grocery store. This brought me back to how crafty my grandma would be with cheap ingredients to feed 10 people at a time.
struggle meals feed not only your body but your soul lmao, you appreciate the fact you can eat something thats still tasty even when you're broke (:
It's inconceivable to many, but so many people live in food deserts. Many people are forced to eat only from stores like this because it's what they have access to. Nice to see Papa giving folks like this some love!
Wth is a food desert? I hear that term, and at first I thought it meant a place without access to any/healthy food, but apparently that's not correct.
@@ronanKGelhaus that's what it is. I used to work at a Dollar Tree part-time an some people walked there because of the high amount of affordable housing in that area. They didn't have cars to drive to supermarkets, and it was a hassle trying to use public transportation for food shopping. So they did most of their shopping at Dollar Tree. It was an eye-opener for me.
@@David_Jr That's... a really big area without any supermarkets. The nearest one to where I live is completely walkable, only 2.5 miles away (1 mile as the crow flies), and so... that would mean that there is an area (assuming no river/other major obstruction cutting through the circle) about 20 square miles without any supermarkets. Wow. Whoever did the districting for that town needs to be banned from public office. Are there any food stands in the area? There are a bunch of farm stands in the 1-1.5 mile range from my house.
@@ronanKGelhaus i lived in a very small town (idk how it was considered one, since all it had was a barely functioning post office) and the nearest grocery store was 16 miles away
@@k1ttydumpling427 Yeah, that's within biking range, but not walking range. I'm surprised that a town that small has no local food stands or people don't grow more stuff in their gardens
From a public health standpoint, this is exceptional! It may not be the healthiest of options, but it gives people inspiration to work with the food that they have access to!
For sure! It's certainly better than McDonald's or Michelina's
47$ for three lil measly courses i coulda went to taco bell and got like 42 tacos with that
It isn't "healthy" by some standards but it's balanced and still includes some good micronutrients! A balanced meal is difficult for a lot of people and it's good to know there are doable, lower cost options
I disagree. I am from the midwest and NONE our family dollar or dollar tree stores have fresh produce, milk, eggs, etc. LA dollar stores are completely different, and he is still showing unattainable. The only time I ever see these challenges are from influencers that live in LA. Can you get quite a few things from the dollar store? of course. But this image that influencers create is harmful because it allows people to believe that across the nation "people aren't starving they're just too picky to go to the dollar store". It's a really harmful narrative and its only one facet of the problem.
@@maxinechester9370 I think you may be looking a little too deep into it. There’s no narrative being peddled, he’s just doing a challenge. Plus, that just sounds like a problem from your area, I’ve lived in Florida and Connecticut before coming to Tennessee, three states which are pretty far from each other, and in each one, it wouldn’t be hard to find what he found at Dollar Store or some other cheap marketplace.
The thing you did with the lemon is a fab tip. Also the jalapeño pineapple relish was genius.
When I saw him do that thing with the 🍋, I was like, how simple yet how cool and why have I never even thought to do such a thing?! Joshua is clearly a genius.

Josh, I have to thank you for remembering to think of all the people who are struggling so badly financially right now. Your (but cheaper) videos have actually been really helping my in household. Thank you so much for helping those of us who don’t really have money to waste on failed attempts at recipes. I love cooking, but I really don’t get to experiment as much as I would like. I can’t afford to have something turned out so bad it’s inedible. I know if it’s something you’re cooking it’s always going to turn out good. While I do have to tweak some of your recipes to deal with my food allergies, your videos are absolutely a lifesaver in my house. My family as a whole is so grateful for these videos.
buying grocery's from a dollar store is not the cheap option, going somewhere like a kroger or aldi you can get better food for cheaper prices. always blows my mind when i see people buying grocerys at a dollar tree or dollar general, just throwing money away
As a Thai, glad to see Tao Kae Noi on here! The story of how the brand came to be is very interesting and famous here and they even made a movie about it once!
Kendrick is the best at describing the way Josh’s cooking/baking turns out. He’s awesome 😎

His opinion the only one that matters
First time seeing him and I love it
sometimes you can find canned/boxed items cheaper at walmart instead of the dollar store. i know it's a lot of work, but you gotta shop around to compare prices! if you're looking for fresh produce like fruits/veggies then sometimes it's cheaper at walmart, meijer, or ethnic grocery stores compared to other places
Very good advice! Many of the Dollar Tree items actually cost more per ounce. If you go into the Dollar Tree knowing what these items normally cost you, you'll be able to make better purchasing decisions.
Of course, there's a limit to shopping around until the cost of time/gas/public transport outweighs what you save on food
@@bethanybrengan9795 this is true. Stuff at the Dollar store come in "off" weights so they appear to be cheaper if you're not paying attention and just judge cost on item and not weight.
@@Magmafrost13 exactly. The only remotely cheap source of food I have is family dollar. Nothing else within walking distance and taxis require actual money. (and the ONE bus that comes through here doesn't go in that direction, and also costs money)
@@Magmafrost13 Got around that by trying a different store to get the majority of my ingredients every week until I struck the right balance between price, distance, and number of ingredients.
That one store using trash bags instead of standard retail plastic bags actually makes a lot of sense. The bag will get another use, and it helps save money as trash bags can be expensive.
Absolutely crazy that it ended up costing $46. Guess it goes to show that even low prices add up if you’re using lots of different ingredients. Great video! Scary to think there are some places in the US where stores like these are the only option.
thank you for saying the last part especially. this is the only option for some people. this could be the only store with food in a commutable distance for a lot of people
I have never seen a dollar store with any kind of fresh food. But when I go there for fiddly stuff (I'm a teacher and we all live at the dollar store). I have seen many elderly people in there grocery shopping. All about more fresh food in dollar store.
@@harvestmoon_autumnsky i wish food was accessible and affordable for everyone. one of those bare minimum necessities
@@harvestmoon_autumnsky around here over in iowa all the dollar generals are changing and having a aisle for fresh produce now its crazy
The dollar store is more expensive than a grocery store! It seems cheap because the package is so small but you'd be able to get generic brand with fresh ingredients at a grocery store for less. The point of the video was more that some people live in food deserts and sometimes a Dollar General is the only place you can buy groceries. I used to live in rural Texas and the nearest real grocery store was a 40 minute drive.
I love Joshua caring about not adding too much salt, for our heart health, just after adding an obscene amount of butter to those noodles (looked yummy tho ngl)
The ramen has so much salt, gotta relax the amount "butter" to not overkill the diacetyl, sodium intake
@@cwefoot4754 He used unsalted 'butter'.
Josh uses an ungodly amount of salt in a bunch of his stuff but so do I and his recipes are bomb. I've cooked a few of them myself.
@@smokeyfrog210 Most likely because without a certain amount you do end up with very bland food. Trust me. I have to deal with a house full of people who can't have a lot of sodium. It's so goddang bland.
Its always a hit or miss as to whats available at a dollar store but I've seen fresh garlic and radish microgreens there before
Wow ... radish micro greens ... I don’t think I’ve ever even seen those in a regular supermarket.
@@lisabeck5582 yeah even at walmart its hard to find fresh vegetables sometimes, and the one in my town has "fresh" vegetables that are usually rotting or rot after 3 days lmao
@@ShaiyanHossain 555
I live in a place with multiple dollar trees and some have more products avaliable that others, there was one that sold BEER, while another had a top notch Mexican aisle. Sadly some of their products are limited time, without warning :'(
Most dollar stores do sell actual dairy butter, just generally in smaller sizes than it's sold at supermarkets. Something I do find odd is that you basically had no side dish--just the relish with your pork. Almost every dollar store will sell bags of mixed greens, which could be easily doctored up into a nice salad.
This is the standard budget for most families. I would like to see more of these since most people don't know how or believe not much can be made with dollar store food.
Orange juice from concentrate is arguably better than orange juice sold 'not from concentrate'. Concentrated juice is stored by removing the water, and freezing it. Turning it back into juice just requires water. But 'not from concentrate' juice is stored by removing oxygen, which also removes all flavor. In order to bring that flavor back, 'flavor packs' are added; the flavor packs are not listed as ingredients because the chemical compounds they use, such as ethyl butyrate or valencine, are derived from 'natural' orange byproducts like the peels and leaves.
indubitably based and chemistrypilled
Legend right here
This was the first video I've seen of his and it gave me bad vibes - He speaks of the food like its below him and a gimick for the video like people don't eat it
@@CM_CM_ pretentiousness is kinda part of his thing. Would he wear a man bun if it wasn't?
@@captainmarvelous7678 I don't see him wearing a man bun. His hair is just pulled back.
I don’t think the video editor gets enough credit. Seriously talented
It would be nice to see a video of like $20 3-course meal cause at the dollar store it’s easy to rack up a lot of money in the total cost of what you are buying lol
Canned pineapple can be roasted. Also, you can make a pineapple and prunes sauce, with onions and Coke. It’s delicious and goes perfectly well with the pork. The pork dish needed a few extras, though, like a cabbage salad or roasted veggies and maybe mashed potatoes.
No fresh cabbage ... maybe, a jar of well-drained, rinsed kraut as a salad base? Add some raisins and finely diced pineapple and onion, plus a bit of jalapeno or chilpotle?
@@OtherSarah2 there’s a delicious Polish casserole made with cabbage, potatoes, a little bacon and some cheese, cream and breadcrumbs. It’s easy to make, very inexpensive and is the perfect side dish for any type of pork cut, from chops to sirloin.
❤Kendrick ❤ The man knows what he likes. I remember when he looked at Josh and said “ Boy you can cook.” Kendrick rocks!!!
Thank you Josh, I have access to Whole Foods and am grateful for that, but I wasn’t always able to afford it. I started off cooking using a lot of 99c and dollar tree ingredients. It brought back good memories and a sense of appreciation. I hope you make more videos that cater to families and have a focus on affordability.
As a Mexican adding any salsa to a dish- it is never redundant 😅 but you definitely cooked a great version of this recipe
the main ingredient is papa's love, which is priceless
I so wish I could be at the bakery with you tomorrow! I’m a big fan, but I live a little too far away. I hope lots of people turn out for it and that the event is a raging success! I've been making meals from Dollar Tree and the 99 cent stores for years. Since, the mid 90s. I will say some of their products have gotten better. I thought the meal looked great.
The dollar stores are what Walmart used to be. Nowadays, I can’t imagine walking out of Walmart for less than 50 bucks.
Honestly what I like about this kind of video is this. I see a lot of videos of "omg we're making the most expensive [whatever] ever!!!!" and I'm like, sure, go flex your subscribers and money, noone is ever going to make that or be able to afford to. We're in the middle of a massive recession and we've been there since 2007... but making stuff like But Cheaper and showing how to make good food with cheap ingredients and little equipment is just nicer.
Kendrick is the best at describing the way Josh’s cooking/baking turns out. He’s awesome
I enjoy seeing you challenge yourself like this, like you did in the video where you cooked outside. I think it's inspiring to those of us who are perhaps a little intimidated by cooking to know that you don't need fancy ingredients or equipment to make things gourmet. Well done!

The videos and content creators that are creative and purposely try to do a kindness in every video are the ones I love. I appreciate the work that went into this video.
For the peach dessert! Could also make apricot jam syrup! ✨
I appreciate this video Josh, the line you gave at the end about how it’s the technique and care is spot on. Anyone can cook! Even if you don’t have access to the best ingredients or all the most useful equipment.
he stole this idea from will osman
Would love to see more challenges with limited ingredients etc.!
Speaking as someone who has attempted to can peaches when I overbought at the farmer's market, store bought is actually better than DIY. No way my crappy kitchen skills/set up can complete with an industrial set up. I loved this. And I learned how to cook country style pork ribs...
Loved the video. I got to say, whoever is editing these videos I absolutely enjoy the random sounds added. The sounds make me giggle at the perfect time and keeps me interested. Props to the editor
I love that you did this for people that can't afford the most expensive ingredients!
Finally a video where Joshua isn't dissing my favorite fast food brand's
I think you should totally go on next level chef because you legitimately make anything and everything next level
Josh is the definition of CHOPPED. He never has to go on the show because he literally just proved himself right here lol. I mean come on…dollar tree ingredients!? Make more of these pls!!❤
Kendrick going the extra distance to edit his own flashy exit-frames is such a great meta joke on this channel lmao
Once again you impress. I love the trick with the egg yolk and butter to enrich the ramen. Going to definitely try that. The dessert looked amazing no matter where you bought your ingredients. Now I can't wait to get my Georgia peaches this year from the Peach Truck Tour. Wish I could be there tomorrow but alas, miles prohibit it. I am looking forward to cookbook dos. It better be better than uno and that's going to be hard to beat.
I think this was really great from the stance of letting people see what you can make even with the limitation that food desserts can cause. If you want another challange, you could try figuring out ways to cook good meals for someone with severe and diverse food allergies. I've been spending a lot of time figuring out interesting ways to modify things for my mom, who has said allergies, to give he both more interesting, and nutritionally filling food.

Magnol in Houston is insanely good. Close your eyes and you are in France. Chef Otto is a master and Kristen is doing an amazing job as well running it. Croissants to die for.
adding them to the "to try" list!
Our local 99c store does have (chinese) garlic fresh, so depending on location you might get lucky. The stock of fresh ingredients in 99c stores varies wildly - so you may see things one week that are not there the next week.
BASED, nicely done. Definitely gonna try the egg yolk and butter thing with ramen from now on.
i would love to see another dollar store video in the future. these are great!

Videos like this really go to show how a good knife can make anything look fancy
I would love to see this made into a series! My favorite dollar store dish is Creamy Pesto Pasta! Made with the cream cheese style product 😂
Ohhhh girl that sounds amazing! 👀🤤
Dollar Tree is a great place to find good deals on food, even though they sadly do not sell fresh produce. Thankfully, Sav-A-Lot and ALDI do have nice produce at great prices.
I've found lots of amazing food at discount grocery stores.
I need more videos like this from you Josh! ❤❤❤❤❤
I'm just eating basic hummus and with carrots and it's awesome. Carrots are just the best raw and homemade hummus is super good. Just a tip for easy smooth hummus, just takes bit of time though, but it's just boiling under lid so you don't have to do anything. Cook those chickpeas till they are almost mush. You get super smooth and tasty hummus easily. You need the outer shell to disintegrate so you might also need to add bit of baking soda as it's boiling.
This video just goes to show cooking is a lot more skill & technique than anything else lol good video josh , i like cooking gourmet meals on a budget

Interesting ! Looks better then most of the food videos dishing out dollar tree meals 🎉
Definitely! It was fascinating to watch his chef brain at work. But I kept thinking about how he spent $47.86. If you *have* to shop at the Dollar Tree, you aren't regularly dropping that kind of money on a single meal (even if some of the ingredients can be used again later).
@@bethanybrengan9795this is such an important call out
@@bethanybrengan9795 Yep. IMO, it's not a cheap meal, it's a limited-options meal, which is still a major challenge. A salvage grocery would make better meals for a lot less, but not everyone has that option.
THANK YOU for finally doing a realistic challenge, seriously I'm sure you might never read this, but it actually meant a lot. There is still an issue with the fact that you had to travel to multiple stores and often some people don't have cars, or even if they do they only have one dollar store.. BUT it is highly likely that except for extreme food deserts, those people could at least find a wall mart and bring it to 2 store trips and a wee bit higher... but in comparison to a lot of your other videos saying "anyone can make this" when they legit can't.... this one is your Golden buzzer as far as i'm concerned. I hope you read this as the glowing praise I mean it to be, I think a lot of people just wanted to finally hear you acknowledge how hard cooking might be for some folks, and that they were wishing awfully hard for you to make something that thay could realistically try. AND you showed the entire grocery bill cost, which was the finely diced aprocots on the top of this ep
Wow I am impressed you are very talented artist

Hey Joshua, is there anyway you could create some videos covering the topic of Make Ahead and then Freeze for Convenience meal prep ideas? I am really interested in ways to spend say an entire weekend prepping and freezing portioned proteins etc and then having a simple dinner by just grabbing parts from the freezer. I would love to see your take on this type of prep. Thanks for the amazing content otherwise.

I loved this. I think a really cool video that would be similar would be for Josh to hit up a discount grocery store (Aldi, Ruler, Save-a-Lot, etc) and plan out some nice/affordable weeknight meals.
Yo my man Josh I've got an idea for you Let your crew/subscribers pick the ingredients without you knowing what they are and you get to cook something out of it
So what's really required is a mind that can think outside the box. Or can type up a list of ingredients and see what google comes up with. (I love what you did with these ingredients.)
Gotdamn, I'm gonna have to try that ramen recipe at least once 😂. Ramen is already not good for you, but it's quick and filling and makes a nice alternative for if I don't want to cook/don't want to eat what I've already cooked. I usually boil eggs to go with my ramen, never have I just added it directly in there. Might give this a try today. And yeah...I also buy margarine 😅. I don't really bake on a serious level and I'd feel bougie buying real butter, but I've considered making the switch.
I add thinly sliced cabbage to my ramen and up my vitamin c.
First of all I just saw on your channel I'm so in love with that you are very creative.i just want to chime in and say you could also get the box that's already mixed cakebox vanilla or the yellow CakeBox instead of getting the frozen orange juice you could blend peaches and freeze those you could also add a little bit of orange juice to blend it peaches and at that in the freezer you could also make the peaches into a syrup and drizzle some of that on top of your ice cream hot drizzle
I've been using country ribs to make Carnitas. They crisp up real nice under the broiler.
