German Bread Guillotine Restoration - Antique Kitchen Tool
Video about restoration of an Antique German bread guillotine , probably made it 100 years ago or much more.
In this video I restored a German slicer , from Peter Dienes. I didn't manage to find out its exact age, but I know that it was manufactured around the first world war. Peter Dienes made many bread slicers, among other machines for use in the kitchen , but this slicer was designed for the richest people of that time. In many pictures of the German elite from that period, this bread-slicing machine can be found.
I saw this guillotine for the first time by chance , among some google searches. Then I saw that only 2 were for sale. In one post, the piece was already sold and in another I had to bid. I won the auction because I really wanted to restore this ancient jewel. There are none for sale anymore, or at least I haven't found any. Which makes me think that they are very rare pieces. So this reinforced my idea to make a restoration video about this wonderful guillotine.
While I was restoring it, I noticed that this guillotine is built differently from the other slicers I've met before or seen at other restorers. It is built with many details and safety elements. For example , the entire handle assembly had a stopper so that it does not fall over and cause damage. Or another interesting detail that I noticed was the fact that this guillotine has a handle at the top of the base for easy moving from one place to another.
During the restoration I noticed many casting marks but I preferred to keep them because, as I said, the guillotine is rare and I wanted to keep as many old elements as possible . In this case, the restoration with the result of a perfectly smooth surface and without imperfections, was really pointless.
After a survey in the KZhead channel community, I decided that at the end of the restoration, I would make a simple and delicious recipe, using this guillotine. I hope you like this restoration, I hope you like the video and the recipe at the end. Thanks !
I can't get over the fact how perfectly everything is lighted throughout the entire video. You are and will be forever one of my real favorites
Thank you for your lovely words mate 😊
I'm here to say the same thing. Beautiful lighting, sharp focus, a pleasure to watch, start to finish.
@dave7038 thank you very much Dave 😊

Built for eternity.
The D.R.G.M letter on the side means Deutsches Reichs Gebrauchsmuster its a form of a registered Design or Patent used in pre 1945 Germany
More like nazi bread slicer
Nowerday’s equivalent is the German utility model.

Thank you man! Do you happen to know the other letters too?
Watch the beginning of the video.
Stunning restoration. I can't believe how well the powder coat came out
Thanks and glad you enjoyed 😊

Herşey harika oldu dostum ama bıçak olmadı
I really appreciate you being careful with the lead paint! Havent seen many other restoration channels take that in account when restoring old stuff. Great job!
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed 😊
It's paint, quit crying.
@@Deere2154Dlead paint can be deadly if either enough gets into your system and/or not dealt with properly
@@4.7_Dakota-CPM I state again, quit crying.
@@Deere2154D i had a coworker whose grandson had been gnawing on their windowsill and the windowsill had been painted with lead paint. he wound up getting incredibly sick. it’s a good thing that he was so careful with it all.
I audibly yelled “MAKING A NEW BOLT???” Didn’t even know that was a thing. Phenomenal work
Thank you so much for treating these old, beautiful instruments and tools with the respect and dedication they deserve. The final results would make the original engineers proud. You've made me smile with appreciation. Greetz from a German in Hamburg.
Hahaha , very awesome this info. I lived 2 years in Germany , guess where : in Hamburg 😅 actually I lived one in hamburg , very close to hafencity and after that I moved to pineberg 😬
This must be, at the same time, one of the coolest and one of the less optimal ways to cut bread I've ever seen. Awesome restoration!
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed 😊
The reason it doesn't seem optimal, is because it's not cutting the type of bread it was made to cut. It's meant to cut Northern European style rye bread, which is MUCH denser than the soft white bread that's cut at the end of this video. I have an old bread guillotine, not quite the same type as this fancier model, but definitely a similar kind of machine, and we would never ever use it for soft white bread. A decent bread knife is far superior for that. But for dense rye bread - here in Denmark we call it rugbrød, in Germany it's probably Pumpernickel or Schwarzbrot or something similar - it's a magnificent tool, that slices perfectly even thin slices much better than you could ever dream of doing with a bread knife.
@papaquonis true , we don’t have here that type of bread. The only chance to do a nice cut is to wait until the bread will became old. But I made it another slicer 2 years ago and people told me that I succeeded to cut the bread because the bread was old and hard 🤧 now I used soft bread 😅
Wonderful work, as usual. Your attention to detail is amazing. LOL @ the warning on your belt sander (or whatever it's called). (14:54 if anyone's curious)
Yeah lmao, I noticed that too

Thank you for the time stamp! I didn't catch that at first.
Truly relaxing, from all restoration I watch, the flow, lightning, everything seems perfect in your videos. Keep doing what you do! ❤
Came for the video, stayed for the recipe! Love the finished bread slicer. It turned out gorgeous.
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed so much 😊
As far as I'm concerned you and Hand Tool Rescue are the only good og restoration content creators.
Glad to hear that and thanks a lot for that 😊
Impressive, he restored this two days in the future!
I saw this on the 29, and am a bit confusee
I'm seeing it with a 4 hour release on the 31st.. what are you referring to?
@@dragolance4394 I watched this video October 27th, 2 days before the date he stamped on the item!
@@Vikingwerk oh ok. That's neat
That was beautiful. Believe it or not, the woodworking was my favorite part.🙂
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed that part 😊 cheers
Absolutely fabulous work as always! I thought this one looked especially "antique" even at the end. I love your "make it perfect again" restorations too but there was something very charming about the brushed finishes and imperfections on this one. Bravo!
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed 😊
After a cheese slicer and two meat slicers, I knew this was coming!!! Awesome job!!! ❤️❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you very much and glad you enjoyed so much 😊👍
Magnificent! Love the fact that you powder coat. Ups the durability as well as the presentation. Love your work. Well done!
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed so much 😊
Hello friend, congratulations, great job 🎉
Totally. And what an amazing kitchen gadget too! The mechanism that rotates the blade as it lowers is a little touch of genius.
Thanks a lot for liking it 😊 cheers 🍻
Just beautiful ❤️. The detail you instill on every part of your works is magnificent. I'd love yo see a short clip of a display of all the ones you've restored.
Thanks ! Great idea , I wait to finish all the kitchen gadgets and I will make a short 😊
@CoolAgainRestoration I will look forward to seeing this! Been a follower for a long time and it would be like touring a museum. Thank you in advance for this ❤
First of all, the attention to detail is outstanding. Second, your skill set and use of tools, stands on it's own. The nickel plating and powder coating, took it over the top. Well done Sir 👏
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed so much 😊 cheers
Both the bread cutter, as well as the recipe, are works of art. I will have to try that sometime.
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed 😊
Man you either find or are given some coolest stuff to restore. And the bread sandwich looks delicious too. Great job as always friend, never gets old.
Thank you very much Michael 😊 wish you all the best
Fantastic video and great work. A joy to watch as usual.
Thanks and glad you enjoyed 😊
Excellent powder coating - nice finish and rich color. Always a pleasure seeing your work.
Thank you very much James 😊
Outstanding restoration. A special thank you for honoring the bread guillotine's heritage by not removing the factory imperfections and returning the machine to it's original color. Well done, sir.
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed so much 😊
Awesome work as always my friend. The recipe at the end looked good too.
Thanks and glad you liked it mate. Thanks for being here every time too 👍

You did an excellent job with the bread cutter. I loved the delicious ending. Thanks for sharing the recipe❤
Thank you very much Maury and glad you enjoyed so much 😊
We couldn't have thought that watching a video about restoration would inspire us to go to the shop immediately and try to cook this. 👍
😅 glad you liked it 👍
Another wonderful restoration. I’m sure there is an upscale bakery somewhere that would pay a handsome price for that to be in their window display 👍🏻
I hope they will make a nice offer 😁
This is amazing, i enjoyed every minute!! And the warning sticker got me 😂 beautiful job dude
Thanks a lot mate 😊
Nicely done. And relaxing to watch before bed. And since the blade was in great ship (if pitted), reusing it as is was a very nice touch. No need to sand it down smooth, looks perfect that way.
Thanks a lot and glad you are in the same opinion like my choice 😊
Gorgeous restoration! I just started watching restorations, but can already tell you are one of the best. ❤

You guys made me laugh 😂 😅
Your work is amazing my friend, absolutely flawless. And the quality of the video is incredible. The item is so cool, I have actually never seen something having both the DRGM and the DRP. Thanks for sharing!
What do the DRGM and DRP stand for?
@@BB1951 he shows it in the video but DRP is "Deutsche Reich Patent" and DRGM is "Deutsches Reich Gebrauchs Muster". Gebrauchs Muster would translate to something along the lines of "useage example", which seems kind of weird but is basically a different kind of patent.
@@Moehre040 D.R.G.M. Was kind of the “small” german patent and was established a couple of years later than the D.R.P. + it was valid only for max 10 years, as far as I know. D.R.P was the “real” patent
That table leg transition was pure art in and of itself!
Thank you very much and glad you noticed 😊
Thank u for restoring a part of my history. Great job!

I love that the blade has kept some of the wear and tear it reminds me of Damascus steel knifes and just adds a ton more character.

I'll never understand why people do these expensive lead tests. Back in my day, all we had to do was lick it. If it tastes like candy, there's lead in the paint. Wait, what was I talking about?

As a German I have to say it’s a crime that you used French bread to cut with a machine that was made in the Land of bread. 😂😅
😅😅
Nice video. But Nickel isn't considered food safe. Granted, this machine will rarely be used, but since you take pains to use a food safe wood treatment, I feel compelled to point out that Nickel is quite harmful to humans.
😂 who told you that? Nickel is completely food safe and approved by the FDA for coatings of food-contact surfaces. Where did you come up with that?
@@jimanderson9867 EFSA. There is a world outside the US and if you think the FDA has customers interest as its top priority, I wonder why so many chemicals that are banned in the EU are deemed completely fine by the FDA. Regardless, the point is moot as the risk that anything restored will be used in food preparation is very small.
Can you link to that?
@@OscarSommerbo cite sources
@@OscarSommerbo 🤦♂️ Learn the difference between “food safe” and “food.” The amount of nickel that the EFSA says is unsafe for CONSUMPTION is more, PER DAY, than the total plating those bolts.
You are a true craftsman!! Impeccable job as usual!
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed 😊
Alot of work went into this restoration project. It was well worth it. The end result speaks for itself. Well done Sir 👏
Thanks a lot and glad you liked it 😊 cheers
Did you really need to use that huge chunk of metal to make that tiny screw? Seems very wasteful.
How else do you think screws and such are made? Pretty much just like that. You take into account the head, that's the minimum width. Screw is going to be smaller.
Usually when I see these videos, the person doing them, uses stock they have left over from other projects. This way they don't just waste off cuts by buying new stock every time. It's a trade off, because sometimes you have the right metal, but the stock is a bit too over sized, so while it may seem like they're wasting the metal, they're reusing scrap metal left over. It's also worth mentioning that steel can indeed be remelted into new stock.
as others mentioned, metal can be melted and reformed
Thanks guys you replied for me 👍
There are smaller pieces of metal that exist. You don't have to turn a soda can sized chunk of steel down to a pencil.@@WinchesterxNL
I never thought a restoration video would make my mouth water.
😅 glad you enjoyed
Ending cook was perfect glad you went for it!
