Toyota RAV4 (2019-2024): Trunk Cargo Bright LED Lights Install In The Rear Hatch Door.
Since 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 Toyota RAV4 comes with very limited lighting in the cargo area we found a way to solve this problem. We will show how we did the installation of two additional interior LED lights into the rear hatch door which provides a very significant increase in the amount of light you get in the cargo area.

Hi there. Very informative video. However, I see why you didn't show the process of fishing the fish wire. What a pain in the butt! It took me 2 hours!
Thank you! Yes, it can be tricky. We actually managed to get the fishing wire through right away the first time. But when we tried to do it the second time it took some time as well. You can also partially remove the roof liner and the side plastic trim if it doesn't go through this way.

Great video, its the only video I found which shows the brightness in the dark.
These are nice lights once installed. However, as most others commented, fishing the wire to the existing side light is VERY challenging. There are a lot of metal structures in the way and you have to work at it. I'm pretty handy and was about the give up. Pulling the roof headliner down a little to see what you are doing will help. Take your time as this will tax your patience. Installed on a 2022 RAV4

be careful fishing wire through the rubber sleeve, the factory wire bundle isn't wrapped there, so you can easily damage another wire in the harness. Don't ask me how I know. Who ever heard of using 22 AWG wire for a brake light??? Sheesh these are made on the cheap.
Just installed mine, use a small tie and wd40 to get through the boot, its then so quick and easy to pull through.
Took almost 2.5 months to receive order from China to Colorado. Toughest part was fishing the line through to side panel. I ended up pulling the ceiling liner down just a hand thickness and separated the side panel seam. Used a straightened coat hangar as the USB cable and then thin wire kept hanging up. Coat hangar worked best. After that install was easy. It helped to see damage to connector in the video so I didn't make that mistake. Also, I have little experience with wire connector types so it would have been helpful to see how to assemble the red and black wires to the male harness connector provided in the kit.

Great video. Did it in an hour thanks to your walk though. Had to pull the headliner though as my fish wire kept bending. No problem though and although I creased it slightly, it’s hidden by the rubber trim. And thanks for the warningon the connectors! On the right hand side, I had no anchor points to zip tie to, but I had a grab bag of 100 various automotive clips I got of AliExpress for $2 that had suitable fasteners for the mounting holes that Iwas able to zip tie to.
@@correcthoarsebatterystaple I just got these in the mail and it's too cold to install them. Sometimes I put extra ty-raps along a wire with the long end not cut to keep wires from vibrating or moving around.
Getting a fish wire to the little light in the side of the cargo area was a pain. I happen to have a little endoscope with lights on it, so I used that so I could sort of see where I was going…and with the light I could tell when I was finally close to the hole.

Got these installed today. Thank you for the video, it was super helpful. By far, the hardest part was the fishing wire. We ended up pulling down ceiling panel and moving the side panel just a little bit. Having a stiff wire to be able to use for fishing was best.

@8:00 not sure what it is about pulling wires through those tubes but I had that happen to my rear dash cam wire.
Using wire lube helps greatly in getting the wire through the rubber hose. Do not connect the power into the side light until you’ve wired everything. Otherwise, you’ll blow a fuse.

good lamps for night fishing
So I got a xle 22 used the same lights from car trim home but for a 2022 RAV. Make sure you order for the right year because the connection to the existing light on the side is different. My lights arrived in 3 days installed them with the help of my dad real easy install. Followed the same method but I used the rubber plug on the left not the one for the rear windshield washer same as this video. BEST thing about this kit is that there’s no cutting or splicing necessary so you don’t have to be an electrician to do this the hardest part is fishing the cables through the rear panel i used a spider pick up claw tool which was a bit easier and a hangar cable for the rubber seal on the top TLDR: Hassle free install just follow this method and make sure you order for the right year and take out the dome fuse just to be safe before installing and tape the ends so they don’t get damaged
I installed these today, was hard to get the fish cable over to the existing light. I had to pull a couple of pins from the ceiling panel and pull the right interior panel off a bit and then I could get the wire with my hand at the top corner and then feed it down to the existing light connection. I used a small piece of 14ga wire to fish the cable through the tub on the top. Took about an hour to complete. The light turn on when the tailgate is opened and off when it is closed.

@@ajdinmravic2331 I had trouble also, in the ceiling there was a small plastic pin that I removed first then the ceiling would pull down a bit, I also pulled the side panel off some. Be careful working around the rubber seal as there is grease and stuff that can get on your fingers and stain the panels
Mark Wooldridge did you use a lot of force when removing them because I feels like they are going to break?
@@ajdinmravic2331 I used a tool to remove the plastic pins first, google car plastic fastener removal tool. The side panel didn't need much force, just need to get the internal fasteners moving. Just pull some and see if you can get them moving.
@@ajdinmravic2331 Going into the first hole, there was a metal piece that separate the upper and lower parts, I think it needs to go into the upper part and then about 70-80% over it needs to drop into a hole that goes down into the right panel area. That is why I pull the upper panel down to see. I probably could have made it work without pulling the right side panel off some but figured it would be easier if I did. Pulling the upper panel down after removing the plastic fastening pins made it easy to pull down enough to see where it needed to go.
Thank you. I managed to install it after watching your video. But the only wishful thing is I wish it turns on manually with the switch, not automatically with the open door. This is necessary where you need a bit of privacy. I mean you don't want to show others what you have back there so easily. Wait, I just thought about it while writing this comment but I can disconnect the red positive wire and connect directly to the battery to achieve this, right? Well, I'm going to try it.

Excellent video. Well made and so is your installation very good. Not rushed. Would a little Vaseline smeared onto the new cables help them to slide easier when pulling / pushing them through the flexible rubber channel up into the rear door? There is a product electricians use called something like "Wire pulling lube."
Thank you! Yes, you can definitely use lube, it will make the installation process easier. The reason we didn't do it is because we didn't have any at the time.
Maybe a light dielectric grease would work?

BIG DISCLAIMER for installing the rear hatch lights on the RAV4 2022 models: they have changed the plugs on the 2022+ RAV4s and the wiring harness/piggy-back plug used on these lighting kits will not work (the new plug is way smaller). I took off the entire trim, installed and routed the entire cable before discovering this, and had to manually re-wire/solder the wiring harness with my own connector to make it work (not particularly hard, but definitely not plug-and-play). Thankfully, they appear to be running the same power, so no issues once the plugs were changed over. Also, unsure if it's new on this 2022 model or not, but the rubber conduit/gasket on the left side was completely taped together from the rubber section all the way down into the cable bundle leading into the headliner, I had to cut into it and re-tape it once the wiring harness was routed through the rubber conduit. If you're looking to install this on a 2022+ model of RAV4, just be aware it likely won't fit if you buy a kit previously made for a 2019-2021 model, unless they update the wiring harness supplied with them!
Hey! I'm not experienced at all with wiring, could you tell me which connector I'd need to buy to fit these into the plug? I can probably look up a video on how to switch them out later but I'm not sure which connector to get.
Great video. I was concered I wouldn't be able to route both the light and my rear camera wiring through the wiring boot/grommet because of how difficult it looked in the video. But it worked! I was able to run the light wiring AND my rear camera wiring thorugh single larger grommet/boot. I did have to loosen the headliner, rear side pillar cover, and the battery cover (hybrid) so I could see enough and get the fish line down to the interior light. Thanks!!!
Thanks! Yes, it is tight. But you should be able to pull both wires through. I would to suggest to use the wire pulling lubricant.

Спасибо! Лампы включаются при открытии задней двери и выключаются при закрытии. Также их можно включать и выключать индивидуально. Магазин - китайский, но качество ламп - хорошее. С освещением действительно помогают.

Hey, thanks for the great video. During the install you pulled the wire over to the hatch wire boot on the driver's side of the vehicle. Is there a reason you couldn't use the passenger boot which is closer to the trunk light?
Since the driver's side boot is thicker we figured it would be easier to pull the wire through it. But you could try using the passenger one. It might work as well.
I also thought the same thing. After reading his comment that makes sense, but I'm worried about the cable end which he broke in the video. Have you done this yourself? How'd it go?
Awesome video! Just curious, I'd like to install the 2 lights like you did, but would it be possible to have them controlled by the same trunk switch? As in, if I flip the trunk light switch all 3 lights will turn on. Thanks!
No, you can't control them all by the same trunk switch. But you can turn them on and off individually. Also, also all lights turn on automatically when the trunk is open and turn off when the trunk is closed.

Which Raar Hatch door kit works on the Rav4 2022? The one on Amazon said that it will not work on the Rav4 2022.

Thank you! Most of the parts should fit. You need to make sure you select correct year of the RAV4 for some of the parts. For example if you want to get the trunk cargo lights (cartrimhome.com/Hatch-Lights-for-RAV4-2019?tracking=morozov_automotive), on their web page you will see the pop up menu which allows to choose the lights for 2022-2023 RAV4. Besides that cartrimhome accepts returns, in case if you have issues.
Alright read the full thing before deciding. I bought these for my 2016 rav 4. Will they work yes. The plugs are all the same. However, the lights themselves are different dimensions along with the maintenance hole being different. I have them just sitting in there with electrical tape for now. When I find a better way to mount them in I will update here. They do work though. Fuse came bad from factory so I bypassed to test.
Hello Danny, I might suggest tiny strip of marine grade silicon between Light plate and Maintenance hole. It will give the solid bond, but could be easily cut off when necessary.

When you do it the first time it can take up to an hour. The tricky part is to pull the wire through the rubber boot. I would suggest to use a lubricant. The sanitizer works great.
I wish these came for the prev Rav4 generation. We have the same trim covers but they're a little bigger than the 2019-2021 version. I was thinking on just 3D printing a frame to fit these lights in there and call it day.

Placement is great,.... for walking up to the storage, "NOT" great for seeing what's in your storage area itself.
Even though new lights are not exactly centered above the storage area, they still provide significantly more light than the original trunk light.

I'm looking at buying a RAV 4 (either hybrid or PHEV when available) and this'll definitely be on my upgrade list. I do have one query though... fish tape is usually quite distinctive looking. In this case the fish tape looks like an extra long metal jacketed USB cable. Is this correct or did I just have too many beers last night?

I wouldn't use my fish tape. It's metal and I wouldn't want to scratch the inner surfaces or get it stuck on whatever is in there.
@@waynebinky Depends upon the fish tape. You can get a fibreglass rod type now. Personally I use a carpet snake.

I'm going to use these lights but bypass the switch in them and wire them to turn on when the hatch opens, or when the OEM light switch is flipped. I'm hoping this will work. When you got this product in your hand did it look like there is a way to get inside to put a jumper over button?
They are in parallel with OEM cargo lamp, will be ON when hatch is open and OFF when closed.

Seems easy but a lot of work I'm no electrician and I think I can get some mistakes from this.
Will installing these lights mess with the voltage going to the lights from the battery?
We have no problem so far.
How did you pull the wire through into the body panel because I use the same type of cable you used a USB and now I've got it stuck .
You have to wiggle it back and forth in order to get it through. Another recommendation is to partially remove the roof liner and/or the body panel if it does not go through.
most of the kits in amazon mentions 2021 connecters are not compatible with 2022.

Hey. We used the left one just because it is bigger therefore should be easier to pull the wire through. But you can try either.

Got 'er done. Used the larger left side wiring boot too. Did not have any luck with USB wire phishing technique - had to take down the head liner a bit and use a coat-hanger. My fuse was blown too but got her working with a new one.

The hardest part was fishing the wires through the little hole with the cables.
Please help. The fuse that came with it was blown and there was a spare but that also blown. What am I doing wrong? Also now the original trunk switch light has no power. Have I blown that fuse too?
Looks like you have a short somewhere. Try to check all the wiring that you have installed for damage. It is less likely but the lamp itself could have a short inside. This will also cause fuses to get blown.
It is also a good idea to check the connectors. Make sure the pins are intact, not bent/damaged.
All resolved. I connected everything first and replaced the fuse. All working now

Does this affect the warranty?
I wanted to add a brake flashing devise on the 3rd braking light and Toyota told me if you play with electronic you might loose the warranty and plus the new rav4 has leds which is not the same to play with cables. But in this video I don’t think what they did you affect the warranty though
where can i order the fuse that came with the harness?
Any automotive store, Circuit City, amazon. Just check the current rating- small print on one of the metal cap of the fuse. Or you could replace whole holder for the blade/ mini blade fuse holder- like one in the main fuse box.

I hate installing these. Been trying to “fish” for 2 hours now. Tried all kinds of stuff and now my headliner is dirty as crap. There’s gotta be another way. Save yourself the time and just use your phone flashlight or something, these are a pain.

Yes, they do. LED lights are connected in parallel to the OEM trunk light in the vehicle.

I don't know why Toyota added only one not even bright enough the whole trunk I was thinking about white LED light could bright better or that one you told me on the link but that will take me some work. I wish you could have a video to guide step by step to install them, thank you.

No longer works for 2022 models as the connector to the trunk led is different now

I just got it in the mail and fuse blew up right up after connection. All my wires were correct.. Now I have to order a new fuse and try it again.. 😔😢
It is strange cause we didnt have any issues. Which fuse was that? The one in the new lights or the one in the car? Did you by any chance check if the lights were operational prior to installation? You may need to see if you have damaged any wires during the installation, which could have caused the short circuit. If the fuse in new lamps blew then most likely it is a short circuit in the new wiring. If it is a fuse box then it could be the shortage in the new t-splitter.
@@MorozovAutomotive it was on tge fuse of the new lights. I didn't even connected to the pair of new lights just connected to the existing light in the trunk to try if the splitter worked and then voila.. Fuse gone with a spark.. Thank you
Sorry to hear that. Unless you want to splice wires yourself I would return the product or get them to send you the new one.

I just use a 30 led motion sensor light and just tape it on the inside of the tail gate. It does the same thing without having to taking things apart.

Very difficult to pass the wires
It is a good idea to use the wire pulling lubricant when you pull the wires through the boot. You can also use the hand sanitizer, it does work as well.
Those access panel are for a reason so you can access the tail lights. I do not see the need for these extra lights. Addition if these light invalidate your warranty for all ekrvtrucal circuits
You still have full access to the tail lights with those light panels. It is "plug @ play" design- no spliced wires in given circuitry, total power consumption of all 3 LED lights is less than p/c of single original incandescent bulb . I see no any harm or damage to the car.

Игольчатый контакт сломался пока тянули провода через резиновый рукав. Пришлось менять весь разъём. Теперь в подобных случаях исплользуем водно спиртовой дезинфектор для рук как смазку. Работает идеально.
