Dotted basslines for deep grooves

Let's flex those bass sound design muscles again, and learn a new bass formula: the dotted bassline! A dotted bassline is nothing more than a short bass sound that plays in a pattern of 3/16th notes, but with a little love it can be ultra funky, and even resemble a polymeter.
For the sound design portion we explore the basics of wavetable synthesis and use Reason Studios drums to toughen up the beat.

  • "some people shame me for putting reverb but i don't care" best mentality for making music, make what you like no matter what you have to do to achieve it, LEGEND

    • Reverb on a highpassed mid range "bass" layer is a good technique for making bass sound bigger without messing up the actual low end.

    • Music making is a fluid creature and you have to be fluid as well. I don't know rules, because I'm the only one doing it in my area. Meaning I'm self taught. don't try to remember it all, only retain what matters to you. I will say the most important thing to know is your daw and how to fully utilize it. Short cut key commands and it's features. May save you from buying plugins you don't need and time.

      @Creator2574@Creator2574 Жыл бұрын
    • @Christopher Bradley Yeah, i have always been thinking that some basic much music theory is more or less essential, but too much of it and you just end up with commercial mass produced crap. I like to experiment and see what happens when i try different things. Definitely not very professional, but i just want to have fun. This being said, i still recommend checking out "The House Of Kush", who actually has some really good videos with all kinds of tips. Just a whole different level than other music channels. Almost get a little "high" from just watching him explain things, lol! Its a very "comfortable" experience 😅

    • Definitely, it sounded sick with reverb. Obviously the mixing stage low cutting the reverb would help but boxing ourselves in with “never use reverb on a bass” limits creativity IMO

  • The dotted bassline is like magic in terms of danceability. I think it applies to delay settings as well.

    @GordonBraicks@GordonBraicks Жыл бұрын
    • Exactly! I'm sure it's the reason that 3/16 is the default delay setting in most plugins.

    • Every producer, no matter how experienced, misses some tricks and techniques. That's why channels like this one are such a godsend. One could only dream of witnessing top tier producers' methodology in the 90s when I started dabbling, unless you had contacts in that world. I remember emailing with some producers for some tips and samples that were generous enough to share them, but there was nothing compared to the endless ocean of educational content we have these days. This generation is truly blessed in many ways.

      @renx81@renx81 Жыл бұрын
    • @@renx81 Yeap... I gave it a go in the 90s as well but had no contacts either which resulted in highly UNsuccessful career as a producer... Now I'm rediscovering my hobby thanks to the unlimited wealth of information on the topic... Have already taken some online courses and probably will purchase Oscar's as well. LIke his teaching style.

I'm curious if you can do a lesson that covers how to do the same with some of the modern keyboards like Yamaha ModX or older Roland Fantom G next for real time performance playing? I've seen some experts do it but none teach electronic music like you can. Thanks for the awesome lesson!
