SNTS study: Arranging a full track from a 1-bar loop
Here is part 2 in the study on how to make banging, relentless techno like SNTS. In part one we made a 1-bar loop, and now we use that to get from 1 bar to a full 5-minute arrangement.
The key to this style is creating 4 "checkpoints": four eight-bar loops that each are somewhat interesting and represent different moments in the track. Then, once those 4 checkpoints all sound good, move on to constructing bridges between them using subtractive arrangement and automation.
Judge the result for yourself. Here is the arranged track: / s-4hrbuswcy7q
We use Ableton Live 10 for this. Everything we do is pretty standard DAW functionality.

plot twist: He is SNTS
I wish haha.
At my first look, SNTS drums video, i think he is SNTS. Same eyes.
OMG! HE IS!! 🤯 mind blown.
haha it would be so funny
@@OscarUnderdog busted!
he's so chill while explaining, but suddenly becomes so intense while listening. love it :D
👹🤭
Me: Me: I'm stuck with this good loop Me: I need help to make this loop into a track Oscar: Hold my beer 💪
Now give me back my beer ^^
@@OscarUnderdog Love to buy you a beer man. Great video's & good vibes.
You should do a series on KAS:ST style production, with all the hard drums and synthy textures
In 25 minutes tutorial video you made a track that I would have been doing a year. Sign me up in your class you crazy talented bastard!
You know how to talk to me 😁🤘⚡
Great job, man. This was a lot of fun to watch.
Oh my gawd, I've been waiting for someone to address this topic for a long time. Thank you!!!
This is incredible. Can't begin to thank you enough 🙏
Just saw 2 parts of this tutorial and you explain so good the process of how to develop the structure of any edm song from scratch (specially on this 2 part). This was the tutorial Ive been looking for since I got involved into edm prod. Thank you so much.
these are fantastic. really enjoying the learning! it is absolutely crazy how much i have learned from the this and the last one... cant wait to finish this one then do the last one
All of this amazing knowledge for free. What a great man.
This series have so much value. Thanks
This came at the perfect time! I'm stuck with a loop that I can't properly arrange, I even took a 2 day break just to clear my head a bit. Thanks for the insightful content once again!
That's super cool! Yeah moving to an arrangement is always tricky, as a few bad decisions can sort of "lock you in" to a lot of troubleshooting :) Depends also on the genre I think. Happy you liked the video!
SNTS would be proud
Awww 💚
Wow this is an amazing series you've created. I love SNTS's sound and have always struggled to come close to recreating that wall of sound without creating just a wall of noise that sounds crap! This is some really useful insight on how that can be achieved and also this track is banging hehe! Good stuff! Subscribed and liked!
Cool to hear this!
Thanks a lot. That's a really good content! I absolutely love it! I learn a lot from you.
Thanks Leho, glad you like it!
this is a really great approach man, thanks!
Cheers Notorious :D
very impressed with all your content
There is something strange about Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium. Free tutorials from these countries are excellent.
I'm loving all your content. You are using Diamanda Galas voice to make samples omg, so great! Cheers from Costa Rica!
This is such a great demonstration of your sheer breadth of knowledge and talent Oscar, amazing recreation 🙀🙀😳😳...im now inspired to go against my own style and create something extremely dark and forbidding 😁
thanks! your channel is awesome.
high quality tutorial! thank you!
Thank-you 👌🎶🎵
Ahh my god I have been waiting years for a video like this
check out yan cook and the video about phase fatale if you need more insight in arrangements for techno. but the underdog videos are currently one of the most helpfull too.
Many thanks, really appreciated!
The pleasure is all mine!
I like these videos Oscar. Thanks man!
insane tutorial thanks a lot viva techno
Thank you, man!
holy f man i just bought my first music prod pc powerhouse and while waiting for it to come home im just binging your vids, im so fukin ready to create some war 🗡🗡
Well damn! Arrangement demystified! Good timing too as I'm working on a similar sound and was stuck trying to arrange the thing!
Nice! Yeah it's a tricky beast sometimes, plenty of ways to mess it up along the way 😃 Hope the checkpoints technique here is helpful!
@@OscarUnderdog it's completely revolutionised how I work. I've slightly refined the method by using Ableton's Session View for the checkpoints and stacked them that way, but it's got me to an 80% finished track in less than a week. Just waiting on your mixdown video to finish it off entirely! 😉😂
unexpected crazy track
🤗
Thank you sir
i've realised why i could never finish songs... i always thought "linear" instead of horizontal. i always thought "i need to change the melody or take the melody somewhere else, but i just dont know where" when in reality what i needed to be doing was adding and subtracting textures. it makes total sense that i am like this as well, being very "left-brained"
I would love to see a video on how exactly you made those bells because they are beautiful!! 😭😍
Damn nice track!
Hey! Amazing video, it would be great to see one of this but with Quelza!
ok now im sure im going to follow an underdog course :) thanks for the video, helps a lot!
Hahahah great to read :D
Great!! 👌
Thanks Remy!
wanna have this on vinyl! 🖤

Amazing video yet again. Would love to see some Lewis Fautzi, Shlomo or Oscar Mulero videos.
S is my fav. But damn you are right.
This looks very much like my shortlist for this stuff :) Still trying to decide which Mulero track is the one that would capture his style the best. Suggestions welcome!

“Oscar is SNTS” Change my mind 😌
Sounds a lot like “Empathy over indifference” !
Hi 👋🏻 Oscar Love your videos so helpful! What headphones do you use ? I’m looking to get some new ones. Thanks !
Beyerdynamic dt990 and 770! Very good value for money.
How many different reverbs have you got on the go or do you use just a couple of reverb buses for every to fo through. !
This is such a great arrangement! Do you think the community will see you release some electronic bangers of your own soon!?
I certainly hope so :) I'm thinking May-June... to really delve into that next chapter for my Torc techno project, with all the things I learned in the past year. Can't wait!
@@OscarUnderdog we’re ready and waiting 🙌🏼
Really cool!! How did you make the gritinstrument and lead foley? they sound good!
In video 1 of the series you see those - they are basically samplers playing foley sounds ina rhythmic pattern!
Seems like I need big mix and bunch of FX boxes, if I would like to do IT with tr8s. Track has that hihats a bit too much high for my ears, but maybe it does KZhead compression. Anyway your Chanel is inspiring, gave me new perspective. Thanks.
Happy it helped 🙏
I would like to see a video on how to create those or similar chromatic bells sound at 9:21
Yer my favourite.
I can see the point of keeping everything else way behind the drums but when you solo the "Interest" elements, I'm longing to feature those lovely dark, acoustically dynamic objects😱
Master, what are the headphones that u use??, I see them cool.. are they good for surgical mixing?? or can u recommend one instead?? especially to work at night... I need a new one THX in advance for ur help ;) ur mix has nothing to envy anyone, master!! nice job by the way, i meet SNTS, lives in my city ...hes a great guy
Haha thanks for the kind words :D the headphones I use mostly are the Beyerdynamic DT770 (80ohm). They're pretty affordable (around 100€) and definitely good to get started producing!
@@OscarUnderdog thanks for ur answer and help!! Ill keep that in mind master !! greetings from Spain
Fuckkking Love That...Hard Vibeeeeee, nice Oscar.
great shit! I suck @ arranging! I actually went through my Ableton project files and found over 400 unfinished tracks...
#relatable 😁
Welcome to everyone's world 🤗
Where is the polymeter video? I can´t find it :(
SNTS POV: your track is a 1-bar loop
I know Oscar can’t do this on the video BUT usually when I do a track arrangement I create a “sample track” track at the top of my arrangement and add my favorite techno jam and slowly reference the arrangement and mimic it. Once I’m done mimicking the arrangement I’ll delete the sample and go back and really personalize the arrangement. Of course this is after you’ve found all of your drums and leads and elements etc. especially for techno like this (my genre). If you do this five times a day you’ll be able to arrange quickly in 32 bar movements. Before you know it you’ll have a 6 minute track. Voila. Also having a default template is critical.
How would you spell the fx that straches the sound? Thanks
You mean distortion maybe?
@@OscarUnderdog the one yo're describing at 8:11
Oh is it Paulstretch?
I think I found it! paulstretch :)
@@diegobeccaris4270 paulstretching is legendary. It used to be this janky but wonderful old .exe. Now there is a VST I believe. Creates the most incredible soundscapes.
What was that stretching technique called?
Pall stretch? Paul stretched?
sick track!! One point of critique i have for you would be to ease up on the high pass filter on your kick every 8 bars, its a bit much and too predictable in my opinion.
I totally agree, and I addressed it in the last video of the segment 💛 thank you for the feedback!
better than the original
ECIN!
there is only one moment that I tried to catch over the course of two videos - branded snts rushing/flying shakers and percussion loops, but as a result in this version they turned out to be too short notes and sounds wooden instead of metal… this is so pity(
I'm curious the total number of hours you spent on this project not including making the youtube video
i sure hope u r hitting save on the regular! it's only cuz i care bruh!
Please please make I Hate Models tutorials 🙏🏻 yo explain so well
The phrygian mode except with a flat fifth is the locrian mode.

No Mana is pretty massive. Any particular track?
@@OscarUnderdog I shouldn’t check notifications when I wake up, I forgot about you! Sorry. Idk man. I get his sound design but I can’t make a track sound like him. Maybe the track Doep. You’d be making the first no mana tutorial on KZhead btw
where can i request a video like this but with schwefelgelb? i can pay in cookies and hugs.
Link on Your Patreon is expired, can You please re-upload?
Paulstretch can technically stretch something infinatly I think. It is just limited by your disk space. I didn't process it, but I had the peramiters put in to stretch a sound to a length where it would of taken something like 22000 years to play from start to finish and it would of let me try, I was to scared to press the process button tho, thought the universe might implode or something rofl!
Not a fan of that break tbh. Don't think it gelled in with the rest of the track.
What does SNTs mean?.. never heard that.
It's the name of a producer!
