For more than 30 years, Yolanda has lived in and around Chicago’s Lathrop Homes, but an eviction landed her on the street. Known as “The Auntie” of Lathrop Homes, Yolanda lives in a tent only feet away from the abandoned housing development she once called home. Without food and money, and facing the harsh reality of Chicago’s brutal cold, Yolanda's desire for housing grows increasingly urgent.

About FIRSTHAND: Homeless
----------
Homelessness is a widespread and complex issue in Chicago and other American cities, with no quick answers or simple solutions. While the public, media, and even policymakers often look away from the problem, WTTW spends a year focused on the challenging experiences and unique perspectives of unhoused people across the Chicago’s neighborhoods in Firsthand: Homeless.
FIRSTHAND: Homeless is part of the award-winning FIRSTHAND multiplatform, multi-year initiative focusing on the firsthand perspectives of people facing critical issues in Chicago.

    • @ctgal9698 of course she has. Etheir when she owned a home when she was younger and more successful. If she didnt own a home, she paid sales tax her entire life. My point is we can pay for wars, give big business tax breaks ( trick down does not work) and give others counties money but NOT help a us citizen. Instead of giving Ukraine or Isreal money, start a New Deal like Rosevelt for infrastructure. Stop sending money aboard and focus on United States.

    • U.S.A. GOVERNMENT and President Joseph Biden and Vice President Karmala Harris should watched this video 📹 and they should give money 💰 to our own US citizens who some of them are homeless. Stopped ✋️ giving away our taxpayers dollars 💸 to help out foreign countries and restarted taking care of the homeless Americans citizens in this country. Because the U.S.A has already pasted a bill into law last week to give a $ 100 .00 Billion Dollars 💸 💰 to give financial aid to Israel 🇮🇱 , Ukraine 🇺🇦, and Taiwan 🇹🇼 . Shouldn't that money stay within the United States of America and help out our own citizens 🤔? Think about this folks 🤔.

I almost died three times living on the street. I went from state to state.Churches to get food clothing toiletries. I went to shelters, and it was so dangerous being there. I finally got an apartment and now working on getting a home. It was God who carried me through my whole journey. I forever L♥️ ve my Father for helping me make it through the storm. How do you expect the church to do much if the congregants of said church don't feel they need to give to the church? I'm talking about giving to a real Bible teaching church that has a history doing for the community, not a building of people being swindled & led by a pulpit pimp.

    • @@misslee3700 I knew a lady who belonged to a church and was struggling to find a job. This was a Christian lady who was a member and tither. When she fell on hard times, the church didn't offer her a dime in return. Many churches operate that way. They won't be there in your time of need. Joel Osteen once turned people away from his million dollar church during a flood in Houston. I never watched nor supported his ministry again.

Mine was due to me selling my house and the buyer messing me around with dates so I couldn't plan my next steps.understand even family who can help but don't. You see then who is really for you. It would never have been permanent I had a full time job. That was stressful and to be honest I sometimes fear it will happen again. I had previously taken in a homeless friend for a year when he was facing homelessness. God made sure I had a roof over my head. We all through the cracks at some point we need to be kind

  • I don’t ever look down on anyone because most people these days are one paycheck, medical condition, divorce away from homelessness. When I lived in shelters 20 years ago, I met a CPS teacher who was living in the shelter with me! She fell down some stairs at the brown line stop and broke her leg and missed work and then had to pay alimony in a divorce that rendered her bankrupt. She lost her home then her teaching job. Not all homeless people have mental health or addiction issues.

So they have tried to attack my mental and physical health. But my Jr said, not so. Jesus Christ said not so. Nothing but jealousy and envy and he doesn't like that. God guided me and helped me be able to sell Realestate and now since I was lucky enough to purchase I was alike to retire and enjoy life once I removed the fillings. I had painful knots in my back neck and shoulders , irritable bowel syndrome, severe brain fog, restless leg syndrome, you name it. My body was trying to tell me to get rid of the mercury . • Ms. Yolanda is suffering from a broken heart. It is not for a person, per se. It is for herself and what she lost. I think she should take a chance and move in with her daughter if she doesn't want to go into the shelter. Stay there, get the disability check started, and use it as income to qualify for a place. The shelter will help you do that too, but this going back and forth is going to continue to tire her out. She doesn't want to leave the tent because she doesn't want to leave that man, and she doesn't want to go into a shelter because she can't be together with that man. They both need to go into their shelters, get on a program that is usually for 6 months and sometimes for 18 months if you have a drug dependency, and take it from there. I know about these things because I used to be homeless. I just cried watching this video because I can sense her heart is hurting.

As long as whatever she is doing is working, she will remain in it. She can easily go live with her daughter, keep her kids, sign up for disability and other social services, and then transition into some housing or at least be put on the list. She has options, and that man is not doing anything. You didn't see him bringing anything back or money or doing any help with her. He's an anchor, but she's not going to give him up. Impose on your friends and family, anyone you can impose on, because that's how you bridge that gap of time where you need to find work and a roof faster. I was homeless a lot in my twenties. It took so much of my health that I'm disabled now. I know it's hard to beat through that pride or idea that you need to pick yourself up. But that's life. Even if it's not money, we live our lives being a burden on something and someone. But that's human and natural. Society, your loved ones, the world has a responsibility to help each other in times of need. Lean lean lean. Please. The faster you do that the faster you can get back on track. A lot of homeless people have nobody. If you have somebody, you simply should not be on the street. I know it's really hard to do. But please impose.

    • The key to that statement is the COUNTRY touts it's wealth. It doesn't say all the individuals in it are wealthy. It's like a church where the pastor drives a brand new Cadillac. That doesn't mean all the members drive brand new Cadillacs. Some of them drive beaters. Some of them take the BUS to church...

Taxes have increased, property taxes have gone up, monies from other services have been moved to help the homeless but guess what.. the government had not tracked where they money is going and how it’s being spent. 24 billion are not account for.. lost. It has become a business to keep people homeless in California. It is sad you see families living in the streets . Homeless are everywhere yet billions have been given to help the homeless and we don’t see anything changing. Corruption!!!

    • @xoxoxoxoxo7997 Exactly, with the rising costs to live post-pandemic, it's utterly outrageous!! I grew up in my hometown & we've NEVER experienced "homelessness" as an issue, almost my entire life & I'm in my mid-50's. I was shocked to see these individuals wondering around town, there was even a young couple with their toddler...this broke my heart to see. Its my understanding that these vagrants were transported to my hometown via a Greyhound bus & relocated out of the DTES(Downtown Eastside in Vancouver), in order to 'cleanup their city' prior to the Olympics in 2010 & I'm worried with the pending FIFA championship approaching soon, what is going to happen to the most vulnerable people in our society. 🥹

    • "God blesses a child who has their own'? Now that's a line written by Billie Holiday who coined the phrase. She wrote it as an ironic concept. Question; does your God not wish folks to have/show compassion. Not everyone who grew up in the projects as you, avoided the pitfalls of that environment as you did. But here's a phrase for you to consider, "Each one, REACH one, each one TEACH one". Instead of condemning her in her present state, practice GRATITUDE. Give thanks for your largess by at minimum, not looking down on others!

    • Yes some family are like that, but most place nowadays have leases in place that do not allow you to have guests for more that 2weeks, so surely a person don't look for a person to lose their home for helping them, because that will be selfish, if I had money I will, willingly give because extra people run bills up, nobody should fall trying to help another person up

  • I don’t want to sound cold but Yolanda is homeless due to her addiction. I have SEVERAL relatives who are alcohol addicts. They blame EVERYONE for their problems except themselves. As soon as they get paid, they’re back it. So I can understand why she has family but nowhere to stay. It’s a continuing cycle and eventually we all see that we’re enablers. Put them out let them go figure it out and just leave it in the hands of God. It’s really not easy. My little cousin stayed with me for 2 years, he destroyed my home, disrespected me. I asked him not to drink in my home, he did it. Eventually I couldn’t take it anymore. He would get a new job, as soon as he gets his first pay. He’s back at it. So far in 2024 he called me 4 times saying he’s gotten himself together. That means thats 4 times that he’s fallen off. It’s not easy for us as families of ppl with addictions.

Because they know no other means of survival & have to be provided for, you can lose your housing allowing others to stay with you, so what everybody be homeless? I try to find programs to help & I will let you take a shower, feed you, wash your clothes & groom your hair, but children are first with me 🤷🏽‍♀️🙏🏾💞
