  • This is my summary. In this great talk show Jim introduces his younger self as a child who had difficulty reading and writing because of brain injury he sustained when he was five years old. He had to be taught three times more than the normal kid to comprehend the lesson. He also mentioned that one of the teacher berated him in-front of other children saying, “This is what looks like if you brain doesn’t work”. That was the horrible thing he had to experience as he was trying to recover. After high school, he decided to have a fresh start and learn the lessons smart. But no matter how much he tried he couldn’t succeed. He was spending so much time in library that he was merely 117 pounds at that time. He got so weak and got unconscious one day that he had to be admitted to the hospital. After he came to senses from unconscious state, the nurse brought him a soup on a cup that had Einstein’s picture in it. The inscribed letters on the cup said, “Don’t expect to get the new results, if you do the same things over and over again”. At that point he realized he had to change things. He went in the quest of sources that would teach him how to study. There were always “what” to study but not “how” to study. He also joked about his name Kwik quite a lot throughout the talk. He shared that he used to participate in running competitions when we was a kid. For him to run slow was not an option because he had “Kwik” written on his back. He also laughed at the fact that he had no chance of swaying the officer’s mind if he ever got pulled over for speeding. In the initial phase of the talk, he asks the audience if they had read the book “Seven habits of successful people”. He mentioned the most important lesson from that book was “You need to sharpen your saw before working with the saw. In other words, when we are required to chop off a block of wood with dull axe, sharpen it first so you can chop easier than trying hard to chop with dull axe”. Throughout the talk he includes lot of famous quotes to corroborate his message. He asks the audience to find two people they didn’t know before and pair in a group of three. Each group of three people had to personate either of superman, batman or Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman was in charge to make the group feel happy. He discusses about different states of mind such as joy, sorrow, happiness, anger etc. He mentions in the talk that we need to be in the zone or state if we want to learn things faster. He mentioned that when we are having shower, we get incredible ideas as our mind is in thita state. He also joked that he took shower six times that day before coming to the talk show. There are several states of mind; alpha, beta, thita, gamma etc. The most important message of this talk was the following six bullet points. They can be abbreviated as “BE FAST”. * B: Believe. Henry Ford: "If a person believes he can do it or not, both of them are true." It is important for any person on a learning journey to believe that they can achieve anything or understand anything. You will eventually become what you believe. * E: Exercise Physical exercise takes you to a state where you can learn faster and retain more. Socrates said," If you learn something and you cannot remember it, that is of no use." Jim gives an example of a time where kids are always ready to play. Slowly that playtime becomes hangout time. As we play more our mind is a state where it can grasp things faster. * F: Forget. In order to learn new things we should forget everything we know before learning that concept. The preconceived notions we have about the subject will hinder out capacity to understand the concept and master it. * A: Active "When you move, your mind will groove." So, it is very important to be active when learning. * S: State of mind it's the most important part when learning or reading. Sometimes people learn pages from a book and they don't remember anything they read. So they start over and even on second attempt nothing is retained. So, it is very important to be in a state where you feel happy and you can concentrate. * T: Teach When you learn something you should learn with a mindset that you will teach this concept or lesson to somebody else later. This mindset will make us vigilant when we are reading, to understand what are the key concepts, what were the contexts used etc.

I have a placement test to take and the only thing I dread is MATH. I don’t know math and can’t remember the formulas and all that stuff concerning MATH. But I’m going to get my Associates Degree in Child Development and I believe I will accomplish my goal. You can do whatever you set your mind to. I’m stepping out on faith and the promises of God. I am looking for a good tutor on KZhead for MATH which is how I ran across this video. Be encouraged you can do all things through Christ that strengthens you. • May I ask, how is that going? I am 18, barely going into Engineering (Civil as well, or I hope atleast) From what my counselors have told me, is that it is extremely difficult to take(the courses), however once I do finish, I will be making quite a bit of money (Out in California) Have you experienced any of the courses? If so, are they actually difficult? Thanks!

      @gc4076@gc40762 жыл бұрын
    • I graduated in Construction Engineering in May. It’s very similar to Civil Engineering. Only 2-3 different courses. The engineering courses are not easy but not overwhelming difficult if you apply yourself and don’t procrastinate. I was in Mechanical Engineering and changed my major to Construction Engineering because I had a mental breakdown when I overloaded myself with several extremely difficult courses (Fluid Mechanics, Dynamics, Thermodynamics 2, and Chemistry). I suggest not taking more than you can handle and also make sure you enjoy what you are studying. I felt like I was banging my head against a wall in Mechanical Engineering. After changing my major to something I was more interested in my life became less stressful and the courses got easier to be successful in. Instructors are also very important. One may be very difficult while another may be much easier. It all has to do with their method of teaching and it’s worth it to take a course at a later time just to get the better instructor rather than finding yourself repeating a course because of poor instruction. I hope this helps.

      @reggiesmith3859@reggiesmith38592 жыл бұрын
    • @@reggiesmith3859 I can understand that. Every professor has different methods for teaching, and every student has a different way of learning. It was more from a basics standard. I did excel in almost every class but procrastination got me towards the end. I start my courses in 2 weeks, still for Civil Engineering. I was just wondering because everyone around me makes it seem like its an extremely difficult thing to do, and I its not like I believe it is not difficult, but it just doesn't seem to be what everyone has told me. Congrats on the graduation! I am also going to minor in fire science so I can get into firefighting (have taken a fire fighter academy previously) so it might be slightly more difficult for me, but it does not sound as awful as people make it seem. Thanks for replying!

  • I have been living my life thinking that I need to make use and uncover all of the potential that lies beneath my skin, otherwise it would go to waste. And honestly, that is true for the most part. We all can be anything we set our mind to, no matter the circumstances. When Jim talked about how he tried to make a fresh start during his freshman year at college but ended being even worse than he usually is... I resonate with this so much since this is what happened to me this first semester of 10th Grade. I did not give it my all, but quite a bit to the point where you would think that you would become an A-B grade student, if you easily got Bs and Cs effortlessly. I have not gotten the results yet but to my surprise the exams were even worse than they usually are. Of course there are many factors that play part in this, but experiencing this felt really devastating. This I have been trying to construct myself into a logical being like fully logical. I failed, obviously, I will stop trying to completely dismiss my thought or how I feel because that is just not right. Anyways, I will return being back to a kid and be more curious (not literally 😁) have a good day everyone!

Being a HUGE fan of marvel myself, and feeling like I grew up with a broken brain (diagnosed with ADD and poor grades) I turned to fictional superheroes as idols. As I got older, I pursed a career in electrical theory and I genuinely enjoyed it. All the sudden I was top of the class in advanced algebra, calculus, and trig. I retained almost everything we learned and I usually aced tests. I was on zero ADD meds. I always wondered why I was never like that growing up. This video has connected the dots for me. I now understand the full scope of how to unlock our capabilities and it’s crazy how I stumbled upon this video accidentally.

Last thing, imagine that high school and college may possibly be missing a few FUNDAMENTAL COURSES. Like credit, dream building, how to understand your emotions, etc! Self education will be almost just as important (if not more than!) as our current Education systems "standards".

  • My dad told me when I was 9 that because my penmanship was bad I would grow up to flip burgers. In the same breath tells me my friend would be a businesswoman because her handwriting was good for her age. Kick to the gut for me, but I had a skill of drawing. So she and I grew the same thing....in a desperate attempt to feel good at something I asked them which drawing was better......they refused to pick.....she had better penmanship and I was the better artist had no idea why they all of a sudden couldn't pick the better drawing. Definitely effected me for years. I would tell my younger self that I am amazing and to keep pursuing drawing and comics because it will be big one day dont stop pursuing it!

  • Hi Jim. I purchased your audiobook late last year. I have to tell you it changed my life (and I haven't even finished it yet). I started a Nursing degree to become a Registered Nurse here in Australia back in 2016. Academically I did quite well but due to some personal issues I lost sight of my goals in life and withdrew from the programme. Then, as a direst result of that I began losing confidence in my abilities and thought I'd just continue to be a hopeless individual settling for a boring and (most probably) dead end job. Since discovering your materials I have regained my self belief and am fully confident that I possess all that's required within me, to reapply for entry into that Nursing degree and fulfil my dream to learn the skills to be a successful Nurse. In the short term I want to assist in fighting Covid on the front lines and ultimately work in the area of Mental Health and help those who are struggling with mental illness. I have been accepted into my choice of University and am commencing Stage 2 (second year) of a 3 stage programme. And I have you and your team to thank for it! You have certainly helped to turn me around and have given me the opportunity to help others myself. THANK YOU!!

  • I was in such a childlike mental state the whole time and when it was asked about meeting your child self I completely broke down because the connection between my child self and current self was so powerful from being brought out an hour that I realised how child me would have felt when meeting adult me and I saw how far I have come, and that I have become someone I would have been proud of, inspired by and would wish to become like. Child me would have seen current me as a role model and that realization was crazy powerful. I think this video was life altering both in the gift of that moment as well as in how I will perceive learning from now on.
