Returning to this Chinese village 5 years later: what’s changed? 🏘 回到我五年前做执教的村,有什么变化么?

In 2017, I taught at a summer camp here for three weeks - now I am back five years later to reminisce in this beautiful village in the mountains of northwest Yunnan ⛰ Let's relive the memories of my first ever time living in rural China!

  • Another great video, thank you both. I do have another consideration. I’m 50 & did the same; move to the city after graduating school. What I have noticed with many cultures around the world, when people retire many move to the country. The city does take a toll mentally & emotionally so many people seek peace & quiet after retirement. Please pass this along to the people at all levels & ages. Infrastructure & progress should continue to be discussed for the present & future. More people would probably return after retirement if their life in the country was more convenient (trains, paved roads, accessible supplies (water, food & medicine), … Please continue sharing true China with the world. Also, thank you for being a great US ambassador to beautiful China. Much respect, gratitude & a little jealousy. 😁🙇‍♂️

  • To me, this one of the best video so far, especially it's the essence is to compare what had happened since 2017, a short break of 5 years. Priceless to witness all the modernization taking place, such as solar street lights and prefect constructed concrete rural road with side weather drain, the most outstanding improvement is the modern looking train and the provision shop, definitely it is a very appreciative improvement after 5 short years.. Jiayoi..👍👍👍

I watch travel vlogs from other countries such as India Middle East , eastern Europe and japan. most places have similarly interesting and friendly people but the Japanese vlogs are sometimes super dull becuz the locals there almost never interact on camera and tend to blend into the background as much as trees and lamp posts

Chinese has some etiquettes, but not so important in daily live. The only principle is to be genuine. I have seen relevant requests for help on Chinese social media platforms. Second, Individual people's difficulties are the results of local government negligence, but this is usually because the local government has forgotten them, not because government does not want to help them. Shanghai has a population of 25 million, and if the government makes one mistake for every million people, it makes 25 mistakes. Third, anyone in need of help can ask for help through Chinese social media platforms, and every asking will be noticed by the government, which helps prevent local governments from forgetting you. Fourth, dynamic zero-COVID policy is designed by the Chinese government to protect the majority of people, especially the elderly. The Chinese government believes that everyone is equal and that life is the highest human right. Fifth, the people who need help the most are those who don't have access to the Internet. If you find anyone left behind, please help them contact the Shanghai government instead of querying me here. I'm just quietly enjoying Katherine's journey.

  • What a lovely vlog Katherine!! Such a heart warming way to revisit old memories. Beautifully shot and edited, lovely use of music and your incredible narration! Really nice to see how the villagers prepare their own fertilizers. Love to see rural China! Oh, I can go on and on and on...but I have to stop somewhere! I never get bored listening you speak. Warm regards

  • Another super wholesome vid! It's nice to think some of the kids from back would remember you even for a bit. Also, Tai'an gets plus points for the mini carvings and the guard goose that's very serious about the job ~

  • Katherine - you have such a beautiful youthfulness about yourself. You constantly stop to look and admire everything around us, even if it is small. You actually remind me of my young child who gets me to "stop and smell the roses". I love your energy and positivity! Love from Australia :)
