In this first part in my video essay-director's retrospective on Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight Trilogy', I unpack the symbolic power of the Batman character and showcase how Nolan utilized this essence to construct the most evocative iteration of the dark knight's origin story to date (with BATMAN BEGINS)...

Batman Begins has got to be the best Superhero origin of all time.
into the spider verse
@@detectivedaydream3603 It's Miles Morales origin but it's not really an origin story
@@spencermalley10 Wtf, it is still an origin story, just different, because it used an original idea to make characters from different dimensions form a hero.
@@cardmaster8772 but miles origin is taken straight from the comics for the most part. They just made it better and added all the spider verse stuff
daydream not even close. Batman begins will have way more impact over the years.
I love how Nolan started Bruce's journey with him falling into a circular hole, which he climbs from in the Dark Night Returns. The hole has grown to an incredible size, but so has Bruce's strength. In the end the little boy has confronted his fears and understands that fear is not something to let yourself to be hold back, but something that loses it's power if you turn your back to it.
reminds me of how his fear of the opera bats and their theatricality is turnt into his first real outing as the batman at the docks, they're very similar and is a clear example of that fear, specifically the one that got his parents killed being turnt into a weapon.
And interesting that Bruce had to be rescued in Begins but in DK Returns a young girl escapes the hole first
Wow, I'm am idiot. I call myself a cinema fan but never figured that out.... I saw all three in theaters with countless re-watches.
"Dark Night Returns" lmao
The Dark Knight Rises
"Why do we fall sir?" "So we can learn to pick ourselves up."

The Dark Knight Rises like the scene where he rises from prison pit.
I rewatched Batman Begins a few weeks ago, and it's such an underrated, beautiful film about Batman's inner demons. It also strikes me as the most comic-bookish of the trilogy, and I absolutely love it
It Is definitely not rated as highly as it should. TDK is obviously the best of the trilogy but you can’t deny that Begins is a fanatic movie. Also I don’t care how overused it is I think the origin of Batman and Bruce is the best origin of any superhero ever
@@iamthebatman6557 amen. Its really THE ONLY BATMAN MOVIE. THe other movies just featured him.
@@leonardobraynen1524 Exactly,
It also still holds some of those Tim Burton visuals in some of the city fly overs.
Agreed. My favorite Batman movie of all time, and definitely in my Top 5 ANY Superhero movie....period.
“It’s not just your name, it’s your fathers name and it’s all that’s left of him!” There’s so many memorable quotes in these movies and I’ve never even seen anyone mention that certain one.
Alfred is the emotional core of these movies. I forgot how much Michael Caine brings to the role.
Storytellers Indeed Michael Cain is so incredibly talented, there’s so many of my top favorite actors in the Dark Knight trilogy it’s just insane.
Martha: Am I a joke to you?
"Where are you??!!!" Here "UHHH"
Don’t destroy it
Missed the ending, which is one of the best of all-time: “I never said thank you.” “And you’ll never have to.”
Yea that's was great.
Nolan's Batman movies have one of my top 10 soundtracks of all time, stunning films.
Still gives me goosebumps every single time
Most of his films
Playing it on the piano is a goal Edit: life goal
Hans Zimmer that dude
Titanic's better
I feel like I was so unfair to this movie when it came out. I remember following the new super hero hype and thinking this was definitely among the better of them at the time but its aged phenomenally well. And The Dark Knight is for my money the greatest super hero movie likely ever to be made, but we would never have The Dark Knight without the amazing set up of Batman Begins.
Same man, I like Batman Begins much much better now than I did originally
Watched batman begins 8 times. Watched the dark knight 3 times. Yeah i love begins much more. Especially the first half
@@gevorkbabayan first half of begins is amazing. second half is still great, but not my favorite, best scene in the film for me is Alfred telling bruce he's never given up on him.

One of the most mind-blowing discoveries I made this year is the fact that the actor that plays Gordon also plays Sirius Black
And viktor Reznov in call of duty waw and BO1
yh when I found that out too ot blew my mind, apparently Gary oldman is one of the rare actors that can completely embody a character.
He also played Winston Churchill and Harry Truman

Nolans Batman films are incredibly stunning. The Dark Knight has to be my top film of all time.
titanic? a clockwork orange? citizen kane? godfather part 2?

The Dark Knight Trilogy is one of the best film series to ever grace the cinema. awesome analysis btw can't wait for more
I couldn't agree more. It's my favorite trilogy.
we were alive for the toy story trilogy kung fu panda trilogy shrek 1 2 and 4 this nolan batman trilogy...we got some great trilogies to rival godfather frankenstein and star wars in this era..I love it
Great trilogy are few.
the TDK trilogy started in 2005, and we are still talking about it in 2019. Just shows how timeless these movies are
I couldn't have said it better.
The same cannot be said for Marvel movies
Well, give it a few more decades before we can call it timeless. For example, 1954 Godzilla is a Timeless movie and Animal Farm is a Timeless tale. Time told if they faded in relevance or kept
they are realistic and well acted..that helps...its not the best writing but outside of that its near perfect films
@@sahabrandon1 ok DC fanboy. People still talk about the Sam Raimi spiderman trilogy, Logan, deadpool 1 & 2 and most MCU films and forget about DC's low points like batman and robin, steel, jonah hex, green lantern, batman vs superman, justice league, suicide squad 2016 and wonder woman 1984.
Why do we fall? Hi everyone, hope you enjoyed this experimental analysis-director’s retrospective. It builds on the insights from a video which I edited for the ‘Jonathan Pageau’ channel last year. So if you want to know more about how the story of Adam and Eve links to the Batman, go check that one out (link in the description). I had initially wanted to do all three movies in one video, but I felt like I had to cut out too much depth in order to avoid an information overload. So, depending on the reception on this one, I’ll make a part 2 and possibly a part 3. PS: Warner Bros., please don't block this video again:) - Thomas
Why do we get blocked Bruce? So we can make some edits and re-upload again a few hours later... never forget that Bruce.
@@joshporters You still haven't given up on me?

The Dark Knight Trilogy is so good it puts MOS, BVS, and SS to shame.
To be fair most movies can put those movies to shame
Jurassic Man375 I agree. But in terms of characterization of Batman, the Dark Knight Trilogy succeeds on respecting the character.
Jurassic Man375 I agree. But in terms of characterization of Batman, the Dark Knight Trilogy succeeds on respecting the character.
Eh, MOS is Man of Steel(?), BVS is Batman vs. Geralt of Netflix(?), and SS is the Schutzstaffel (lol)?
The Dark Knight trilogy is still being rewatched and has a good standards. It never gets old and its still the best compare to today's current DC characters
Nolan was pretty fortunate to get this trilogy off before Marvel just began to dominate everything else.
And even more fortunate to do it with a good actor playing Batman
You mean Marvel is fortunate that Nolan made people care about superhero movies
@Straight Busta what about Blade ?
WB was pretty fortunate they let Nolan do whatever he want
@@Thefamilychannel723 If we're being honest, most people don't know Blade is actually a comic book character. Same with Spawn.
The Dark Knight is the greatest superhero movie of all time. Period.
"Some men just want to make great video essays on great superhero movies." Batman Begins is an incredible character journey and an incredible telling of Batman's comic-book history. The movie literally starts with an iconic image from one of Batman's most influential stories (The Man Who Falls) and ends the same way (Year One). And it popularized many obscure Batman characters that even many comic fans didn't know existed. I started reading Batman comics three years prior to first seeing Batman Begins; somewhere around 2001-2002. I was pretty much in loop with most things about Batman and his history, but even I was not aware of characters like Lucius Fox. Since then he became one of my favorite supporting characters in Batman's universe. That's what a great adaptation does: makes you a fan of characters you didn't know about beforehand.
Batman Begins is such an amazing Bruce Wayne origin story I always find myself coming back to Begins. Yes I love DK and DK Rises but there’s something so nostalgic about Begins and i love how Bruce/Batman is the main focus.
carl jung's legacy breathing in the video
It's not Carl Jung's legacy. He only dealt with how legends influence the world, and even then, there's plenty of people who've worked with them before. Mircea Eliade, who deals with it in theological terms, comes to mind.
@@XxLeCaptainxX but the terms: shadow, self I guess very much belongs to him
And the Bible.
@@abdelrahmanz007 And also archetypal representations. The heroes journey too.
@@XxLeCaptainxX that's an incredibly inaccurate description of Jung's life work. Clearly you haven't read enough of his books.
1:47 I think people should talk about this more often, how Batman gives Bruce an outlet to self-betterment.
Batman's world is definitely complex and what struck me the most was the investigation of the character and the forces that drive him at their core. The trilogy is also notable because Batman, even with his good intentions and ever improving understanding of the world and his own self is never shown to be - sufficient. There is always something more he has to learn - something more he has to become.
Batman is the perfect story telling the philosophy of Carl Jung and his explanation of the shadow self, especially when introducing The Joker as his antithesis, and Catwoman as his Anima. It was genius way to tell the story, yet it seems that most dont even know why the story is so relatable for the, lol. If it were up to me Carl Jung's work would be required reading in school. it gave me a different outlook on life, i only regret not discovering it sooner in life.
If that happen then people would actually learn, which is bad for democracy.
@@bradspitt3896 What an incredibly true statement. Sad, but indeed true.
The Dark Knight trilogy is so underrated.. Yeah they’re massively and widely respected and recognized but I feel there’s more talk of movies so inferior to these. It’s not the most comic book accurate but it sure as hell is the most entertaining. Heck the Batman Begins game was pretty damn fun for it’s time, especially when compared to the other Batman games the only games that are better I’d say it’s the Arkham games.
Connor: RK-800 I feel the same way, these movies aren’t just the best superhero movies they’re among the best films ever made, but they’re not discussed or mentioned as much as the MCU or the Raimi trilogy.
Batman begins basically raised Batman games to a better standard unlike all the past Batman games that were bad.
@@meharmann4328 the first 2 Raimi spiderman films are on par with the dark knight trilogy tbh. Without them we probably wouldn't have TDK trilogy if I'm being honest. Iron man 2008 is also a great movie too. Then there's Logan as well. At least give Marvel credit where credit is due.
noboy will talk about Avengers in a decade's time, TDK trilogy is still in everyday conversation and essays ~15 years later
Fixpont DOUBT
The Avengers was that great of a movie. Just like Endgame wasn't that great. The reason they were popular is there was build up to them so they felt more impactful than they really were. As stand-alone films though, they aren't very good. All 3 of the Nolan Batman films are better films by far.
@@brokenwave6125 This... I may say the third wasnt that great but both Begins and TDK are actual good movies. Take every comic book element from these movies and they would still be good enough to be considered two decent movies about this detective that was forced to work outside the law in order to stop some terrorists and psychopath. Cant say that for the MCU movies... Cap America Winter Soldier, maybe? But still not as good
You are wrong
You can analyze Tony Stark's journey from beginning to end.
This is so brilliant. Man. Now I really want to watch Batman Begins again. For just the 30th time or so. LOl
Honestly, this movie is one of the greatest I've ever seen and I think it's way better than the other two
This movie is so awesome and nostalgic. I remember watching Batman Begins on my PS2 slim all the time back in the day!
Alfred said, “why do we fall?” ...what’s another word for fall? Autumn. What happens in autumn? The leaves turn colours...turning colours means changing sides...side-splitting is another way to say...laughing...Alfred has been the Joker this whole time!
Big brain take
Mike C illuminati confirmed
I think there’s actually a comic book where Alfred is the Joker
your inner jeff goldblum is in full effect I see ...independence day anyone?
I also watched this film again. Wow it’s so good. The scene when the joker card comes out gave me chills.
Excellent deconstruction. Nice layering of Nolan’s commentary with your own supplemental commentary. Incredibly well conceived and considered. I particularly enjoyed the piece wherein you synchronized the character’s dramatic development with the visual of his ascent from the prison in the third film. Bravo!
Thanks Craig, appreciate your words of encouragement! - Thomas
I was so upset for this was taken down. I’m so glad it’s back. Man they pulled it down so fast.
The Adam & Eve metaphor is so heavily dependant on omitting such a vast amount of detail from the source material, whilst also requiring creative reinterpretation of the details you chose to include. You could have picked any other story where a character starts in one place, some stuff happens, then they descend to another place (ie literally every story ever told), and made it sound less forced.
14:34 BUT HE MERELY ADOPTED THE DARK
I got to say you guys gave an excellent analysis of the movie. I have rewatched all the films in the Dark Knight trilogy and I wanted to understand what Christopher Nolan was thinking when making these movies. As an aspiring actor and filmmaker myself I think that is very important to understand how a great synopsis is made.
Batman 1989, Batman Begins and the animated Batman were what all introduced me to Batman back when i was 6 yrs old. I miss the days when superhero movies stood on their own and we were left in awe of how amazing comic book characters like batman, superman, spiderman, the x men and even Iron man were in their own films before everything was a cinematic universe and existed to set up sequels (not that there is anything wrong with that).
2:44 IS THAT WHO I THINK IT IS

Beautiful job! cant wait for the second video!!
This was such an amazing essay, so many analogies and fancy terminologies for this story dissection, feels like if LikeStoriesOfOld made a video on Batman, and this was way more poetic than the usual video analysis about Batman, alot of subject matter and references which will no doubt fly right over most zoomers heads. Many religious analogies and comparisons to other films, and you being such a ascended film buff of course you're going to have a greater mastery of the english vocabulary than your ordinary Comic Book Geek. Seriously, the amount of editing for perfect visuals is baffling, and the writing felt so natural almost as if you were simply translating the film's intentions and meanings to the audience , in my opinion your interpretation was that spot on, or at least your presentation made it seem so. Great Video and Fantastic Essay. godspeed
Amazing work as always!
This is absolutely brilliant. I can't wait to see your analyses of the other movies. Also: that laugh at the end. PERFECT
Thanks Michael!
Great Video and analysis of the character using Jung`s concept of the shadow and the Anima, i could not sense any information overload on the contrary there is more to be told, i cant wait to see part two ( the dark knight ) i guess it would be a longer video because the Joker is a very deep character that represents not only 1 man`s shadow but the collective shadow of Gotham city, which tests the Hero`s personality to its core ! Heath Ledger simply personified the Trickster Figure ( Archetype ) in this movie.
"Why fluffy white kittens, Master Wayne?" "Because they're cute and make me giggle. I want the criminals of Gotham to be feel happiness and giggle." "What symbol?" "Something cute, something giggly."
