What Will China Look Like In Xi Jinping’s Third Term? | Insight | Full Episode

As expected, the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China ended with President Xi Jinping elected as paramount leader for a third term. But he faces mounting challenges both at home and abroad.
Internationally, the Chinese leader is looking at an increasingly antagonistic America, who is competing with China at every turn, on the economic and geopolitical fronts. Meanwhile, hanging over this contestation is the issue of Taiwan's independence.
Domestically, frustrations over continued COVID-Zero policies, economic stagnation and a jaded millennial class pose severe challenges for the Chinese leadership.
Insight examines President Xi's speeches during the 20th Party Congress, and the events that happened around it, to gain some understanding of what will shape Xi’s third term.

  • South African here, Chinese wine is not popular in SA. Maybe the country is used as a channel to other markets, but given the wine culture in especially Joburg and Cape Town, Chinese wine is nota popular alcoholic beverage, in a country that has economic disparity - it's not a feature in many homes, the poor, middle class or wealthy. We do have the largest population of Chinese in Africa +-500 000 but outbof population of 60.1 million I can't see that as reason for high demand of especially higher end Chinese wine

    • It might be the case where 'fake sales' (#) are generated. It isn't uncommon for companies that are listed on the stock exchange reports 'positive revenue' like *Luckin Coffee* which got itself delisted by USA after falsely reporting their sale revenue by the millions/cup.

    • and that game can play hundreds of years without boring people. majority of people can be fooled easily in the west. what ordinary people read/watch daily would change their vote. not everyone can have their voice heard. some argue it is free society. yes comparing to China. Big players always have big companies to finance their campaigns, and big news outlets also play a huge role to influence the compaign. are they truely independent? I am sure many small ones do. but I do think the elites are able to "manipulate" its citizen's opinions by creating some kind of partnership with big news outlets such as CNN or Fox news or whatever. all together, they have bigger voice if they have the right money and have the right representative, their candidate, and have more control over big news outlets.... I have to agree that the west do have rule of law to govern the games. that is why the game can keep playing. everyone seems to be paticipating the fair games with their votes, but they are actually not in the game at all. What can the forever games to help ordinary people's daily life improvement? very little. That doesn't mean Chinese system is a better one, actually Chinese system is more risky. Xi took the 3'rd term, rule of law doesn't apply to those top leaders in China. instead law is a tool to govern the people. In today's China, a lots of domestic problems need to be solved. if the mounting angers, disagreements, disappointments reach to certain level, it would erupt. Chinese CCP's legitimacy isn't from votes, it's from the economic performance. what if it stalled? chinese people would take that legitimacy away. that is the real danger. I truely think that it is SUPER bad news to China after Xi altered the constitution to let himself continue to rule. I hope next term after Xi would make some political changes. the current system has worked very successfully, but it won't last forever. like any other systems, it has its life cycle. it's a critical time to call for change. we don't need a strong man like Xi on the stage. we need to a better system to sustain the grows and development. don't have to copy the West, be creative. the important step is to allow the political reform to “cross the river by feeling the stones”. just like Deng did for economic reform. get rid of "political right". It doesn't matter if the cat is black or white, the one that catches mice is a good cat

  • Criticising is so much easier, all people seem to do is criticise Xi is wrong about this or that, who is confidence enough to say I can do a better job than Xi at running a country with a population over 1.4 billion. Who have the will, strength, intelligence, confidence, resilience, and wisdom to run China, make China great again? Who have the will to go up against the US and lead the Chinese people to a better tomorrow and to overtake the US and become the number 1 superpower. To say one party system can leads to many bad decisions, the same can be said about the multiparty system.

  • The building of hundreds of thousands kilometers of highways and 40 000 kilometer of high speed rails was an important milestone for China. However China can not achieved this without the ten of thousands of professional engineers and other fields trained in the West as well as locally produced. China is a mountainous country. Despite its size only a quarter of its land can be cultivated. The high speed rail had reduced transporting time and increased connectivity.

  • Income and wealth disparity is a huge challenge for China, and Xi's approach to try balance this rather than keep pushing for economic performance and high GDP growth make sense to me. Why is CNA not examining this rather than looking at shadows and smoke?? Also these experts are looking at it from a traditional sense forgetting that income and wealth disparity is a major cause of all countries to overcome. Also China has a dual track approach to economic growth there is the internal and external economic track and this is also unique towards China, yet CNA conveniently ignores and surprise your experts dont even talk about it! How is it a layman like myself can look at this whilst these so called experts just stick to traditional and common talking points!

    • @@bannedagain1784 - Not sure where u get your news/info from? I guess u dont understand how economics work and how countries development process work. Hopefully this can help u understand better. I will give u eg using Spore my native country to explain. When Spore was ask to leave the Federation of Malaysia, Spore only had a British base and limited economic potential infact I do remember how poor we were from my schooling days using self made cheap soap and we dont have much meat to eat. Spore positioned itself as a manufacturing base and also establish itself as a global hub in the region for trade and travel and we moved from a developing economy and finally managed to reached developed economy status. Spore started with low cost cheap manufacturing and move towards higher cost and finally high technology manufacturing. This is what China is currently doing, they are moving up the economic ladder from low-cost cheap manufacturing towards higher and more sophisticated and also automated and robotics replacing humans in manufacturing. China is huge country and the economic development is different between provinces, county's, villages, towns, cities etc.. and its decentralized control and mostly local officials decide on their management following guidelines from the central government. Not so say that China dont have problems, but similar to all countries China has its own domestic and economical problems but none of this will ever sink China the 2nd largest economy and some even consider it the largest depending how u measure it. If China is to sink the rest of the world will suffer even more than China as China's trade in the world is the largest in the world and no country can surpass it.

  • I'm a yemeni-american and from my experience in living in both countries, China is a great example on how to run and lead a country. Sometimes a one party ruling government where the sole purpose is to improve the well being of it's people, country, economy, and development of the country as a whole. So it is better than a democracy where society and government is supposed to be united is instead divided into smaller useless groups that accomplish nothing and waste heir time in fighting each other. Also china is investing and helping develop whole continents like Africa and countries improving their economies, infrastructure and the lives of HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF PEOPLE all around the world. All one needs todo is ask the leaders and people of those countries. Now china has increased their economy by doing business with more countries who are also more than willing to also do business so it goes round full circle creating success along the whole curve. MORE POWER TO CHINA AND ITS PEOPLE

This has huge implications for Taiwan-PRC relations and gives USA opportunity to interfere as seen in the Pelosi visit. But this is the global picture. In the ground things are moving well as Taiwanese township built with Taiwanese small business and Taiwan food and Taiwanese living peacefully near Shanghai. We need more of these townships and people to people relationships.

    • After seeing what happened during Shanghai's lockdown; there is almost no chance for Taiwanese citizens would ever want to accept authoritarian rulership even if it offers short-term prosperity. It was already a mistake for Beijing to crack down on Hong Kong the way it did in 2019 which literally caused the landslide victory for the current pro-democracy President in 2020. vice-versa: The way Beijing seemed to have successfully used Moscow to invade Ukraine, failed to divide EU the way they anticipated. It would have been ideal for Beijing to create an implication at the EU to break up its relationship with USA since Beijing should be able to deal with a cold war with the USA but not if EU also does economic sanctions. A Beijing expert assumed EU would be divided since Moscow is one of EU's biggest energy/food suppliers as many still haven't fully recovered from the PANDAmic and if Ukraine falls into Moscow's hand like how easily Afganastan falls. Beijing can capitalize to use it to send all forms of message to Taiwan's civilian to surrender in peace but instead T___T it showcase that the rank #22* Ukraine is capable of defending itself from #2* Moscow as long as there is a will, it also ironically revived Nato which was slowly becoming obsolete in peace and create high-level unity within multiple EU members even if there are differences that Moscow had exploited over the year. *Rank of Military Strength from open source. Nato may even become Nato+ I think Beijing reveals its tooth at least 3-7 years too early IMO unless it projects its BRi to fail in the long run. I would have at least wait til those are fully intergraded before making a strike that can cause all maritime trade routes to be blocked - sealing up Taiwan is the same as sealing up itself... risking a nation as big as a continent for an island 1/XX of its size seem unbalanced... not to mention Beijing give lands that are over 30 times bigger than Taiwan to Moscow for their political support. Oh well; in war, there will always be winners and losers - For example SG/India actually benefited a lot from the fall of the former world factory and HK's status as a global financial center.

I also thought I would have restricted or no access to my usual online activities but to my big surprise, I was able to communicate via WhatsApp, Messenger, post on Facebook, watch KZhead etc. I didn’t even have VPN but just used my roaming. 😂please don’t tell Xi Ok?

    • @@CalvinK300 Yes, I was able to use those apps as well. But I was staying in major hotels in which many foreigners/government people go (e.g. Intercontinental in Shenzhen). These well-known exceptions are to please these people, when it's in the interests of business. The internet activity is still being monitored though.

    • @@DavidSchilterI visited lower tier cities from Shenyang to Tianjin and I thought I would be cut off from the rest of the world but that didn’t happen. My conclusion is that the ‘Great Firewall’ is greatly exaggerated by western media. As for ‘monitoring’, I have no problem with that because I don’t conduct any illegal activities. It is the same when I visit USA or Russia. Whenever you cross a border, you should expect the local authorities to monitor you. The only question is to what extent.

Democrat give money to green energy, oil money will retreat. Republican give tax break to the rich and Democrat give money to the poor. All for election. Every country, every policy, there will be Beneficiary and loser, total unity never happen, conformity or choiceless is mostly the outcome.
