Inside India’s explosive population growth | 101 East Documentary

India has surpassed China as the world’s most populous country.
Driven by states like Bihar, the country's population is forecast to continue growing.
With Bihar’s fertility rate much higher than the national average, authorities are using a raft of family planning measures, including incentives for sterilisations, which critics say places the burden unfairly on women.
Home to more than 120 million people, competition for jobs is tougher than ever as the state struggles to curb its high unemployment rate.
101 East investigates attempts to control India’s population growth and the challenges of finding work in the world’s most populous country.

Sadly we humans also do not make plans for the future beyond 5 to 10 yrs out in most cultures so the resources we're devouring now that the natural world is straining to provide for we will over shoot or already have over shot---the suffering coming our way is of nightmare proportions. • @@Fan-zx1lz swthane saying that children did not have a choice in the matter, is an inane thing to say. What child would have made some other choice than to come alive and be born? And what about all the people who somehow expect corrupt governments to provide their pension plans? What of the saying that "blood is thicker than water"? Isn't security in one's own family or in having many children, possibly more reliable than trusting in the economy and government? I figure if you want old-age-security, you have far more security in having 10 children than in having 1. 10 children is a large range of possibilities, that at least one of your children will be in a good position to take you into their home, when or if you become old or disabled, and do it willingly and be glad to do it. Having only 1 child is a huge burden on the children. So this 1 child is responsible for 2 parents and 4 grandparents? Is that even realistic?

Thats why climate change is occurring at a fast rate, cause societies are advancing from that "poor" conservative era; poor conservative cultures tend to over populate, as thats the only way they survive and their religion to survive, as this applies world wide; When liberalism and modern societies come in, less population growth, less marriages, less children being born. Everyone claims to be hiring, but so few qualified people are getting hired either because they are too over-qualified and companies don't want to pay higher wages, or because employers have wildly unrealistic expectations that don't match up with the salaries they offer. It's causing rising unemployment and under-employment rates that are contributing to younger generations no longer having disposable incomes. A lot of younger people will get scolded by older generations who no longer understand how the economy works and get frustrated that their children and grandchildren aren't leading the same lives that they did decades ago.

By 1980 it had climbed to over 600 million, and from 1980 until 2011 (when the last census was conducted) it skyrocketed to 1.3 billion. As of this year it's now climbed to 1.4 billion and is predicted to reach 1.7 billion by the middle of this century! • Watching this from Tamil Nadu that has highest Human Development Index and 2nd highest GDP, I am seeing how social revolutions in 1950s made my state holistically developed and the vision of the leaders made my state an economic powerhouse of India. States like Gujarat and Maharashtra still lag in their social development index, their education levels is still on the lower end. While the South Indian states have exceeded in all developmental indexes. India’s economy is on top because of these 4 southern states.

    • Yes, leaders do matter. Tamil Nadu has been lucky in terms of development. As a person from Bihar, I have stayed in Tamil Nadu for 9 years as my father was posted there. It's all good but at ground level there is a lot of casteist politics. A lot of low castes in Tamil Nadu have converted and are earning money from the churches. Most of them are demanding to be recognised for reservations. In terms of facilities, it's better than any state. But there are problems that exist and can't be ignored. To put it into perspective, my father belonged to one of the most remote villages of Bihar which looks even worse than the village shown in this documentary. He used to walk miles to get an education. Getting into a recognised institute in such conditions is a dream but he got into IIT, cleared UPSC. We are living a privileged life because of him and him alone. Bihar does need a social revolution but the current leaders have no interest in combating the states problems. Biharis are abandoned and are now being targeted by religious clerics. It's sad really.

      @elva136@elva1368 ай бұрын
    • @@elva136 you absolutely right in your observation, the caste problem at root level in Tamil Nadu is quite an issue that needs to be addressed. One thing that was destroyed is the Brahmin Domination in power and education sector in Tamil Nadu, but that gave power to the mid level castes which has the numbers to do atrocities, in the 70s and 80s these castes tastes power that came from education and jobs through reservation and from 90s till now they advent of globalization provided them with wealth which in turn emboldened them. But slowly as globalization brings in global cultural impacts, slowly caste is losing its sheen, probably in another 20-30 years it will go down. And kudos to your dad who struggled all the way to the top, India is made of such incredible men who fought their way out, your dad life represents India life itself, unlike African countries we didn’t die due to infighting, but within 75 years we became a success story which I think nobody could have even dreamt of. In case of Bihar and UP or with any North Indian states, I think the bigger issue is they were under princely state rule for long time, which suppressed any possible social revolution unlike the areas ruled by British, which had schools and colleges built in huge numbers. Though slow, I hope in the next 25 years the north will develop. Our only fear is before that, we shouldn’t see any religious induced war among us, which will kill any small progress we made and put us back 25 years

  • Some people in the comments Section saying population growth is because of illiteracy,bad education systems but I don't think so that's the case ,just change your mentality a bit .... I'm from northeast India and people here even the uneducated one knows how many children they should have and I've seen many outsiders living here with 5 ,6 ,7 childrens increasing its pollution , involving in crimes , littering garbages in thier locality,bad manner ,N mostly r from UP ,Bihar ... The more the pollution the more will be the chaos ...
