A squirrel begged a man to help her baby, who was in trouble

How do you feel about squirrels? I, for one, never get bored of watching them. They run around, racing each other, jumping from tree to tree, fluffing their tails and shaking up the branches. But they never let me get a close look at them, running away as soon as they notice me. That’s why the stories I’m going to tell you today are so incredible.

  • years ago I had a particularly sweet cat bring me a baby squirrel. The babe appeared uninjured, but was listless. I had no idea where it came from. I called a woman I knew did squirrel rescue for our state's Fish and Wildlife Dept and took him to her right away. Once she examined the little one she said the oddest thing. It seems the baby was severely dehydrated. She concurred that the infant had been separated from mother squirrel for quite some time. Apparently in an odd twist my cat saved the life of that baby squirrel. I was in cat rescue at the time...always a litter of sickly kittens in my home. I think my cat thought along the lines of "something small in trouble. Take it to Mama she will know what to do." Animals never cease to amaze me.

  • One day, my dad and I found two baby squirrels that were lying on the ground. At first, we thought they were rats but on closer inspection it became clear that they were squirrels. So, we put them in a tissue box up high, and put little towels for blankets. Concerned, we worried if the mother would return and eventually she did! She took them back again to our relief, and that was one of my stories about saving some animals.

  • I have a squirrel story for you. Some years ago I stopped at a rest center on the interstate. They had all kinds of vending machine there. Sitting on the edge of one of the machines was this squirrel looking though the glass front at all the food inside. As I came up I could see it was very interested in a bag of sun flower seeds. I was like "Why not?" So I bought the bag of seed and gave them to the squirrel. It took the bag and ran off into the woods. It stopped a few feet front the tree line and looked back at me as to say "Thank you." It made my day to make a hungry squirrel happy.

  • I had a squirrel running parallel to me once in California, up and down trees along the way, following me. When I noticed, I stopped and held my hand up to him as though I held something. I only expected him to maybe look from where he was. To my surprise, he jumped off his current tree, ran over to me, up my leg to my underarm, and then realized I didn't have food for him. He looked at me and made angry chirping noises then jumped down and ran back to his tree and would not come back. He was a beauty!

  • Many years ago I had the same experience like in the last story. I was in my back yard just walking around when my dog started barking at something at my feet. I saw something and jumped back, not knowing what it was. Then I saw it was a very young squirrel and it was crawling towards me. I backed up some more and it kept following me around. I finally picked it up, brought in the house and bottle fed it from a recipe I knew for puppies. It was very hungry. It was about a month old, maybe a little younger. When it got old enough I built a bigger cage and when he got used to it I attached it to a tree. It had doors on both sides and one on top so it could get into the cage for protection or get out and climb the tree for protection. The squirrel could come and go as it pleased. It would play in and around the tree during the day and sleep in a boxed in bed area in the cage. I went every night for a week or so and locked him in for protection then let him back out in the morning. After about 2 weeks I stopped locking him in at night. Not long after It had found another place to nest but would come back everyday to eat. We slowly cut back on feeding it so it would have to find it's own food. Since then I had raised 2 litter of squirrels. One litter didn't even have their eyes opened yet. We heard them crying for 2 days non stop and no mother around, and when we saw they were crawling out of their nest onto the tree limbs, which one fell to the ground, we went and rescued them. It was pretty dangerous doing so since they were out on the tree limbs but we managed. Squirrels are so much fun and playful and would have loved to keep one, but like the first one, we interduced them back into the wild where they belonged when they were old enough and they came back every once in a while for a visit and a little treat once they have found another nesting place.

  • I once let a mama squirrel built a nest on my fire escape outside my window. I didn't chase her away. Instead I talked to her as she came and went for material for the nest. I encouraged her as soothingly as I could. I spent part of the winter listening to the family of squirrels chatter amongst themselve. They're a real vocal bunch. In the spring the mother squirrel was sitting on the stair railing of my front stoop. Her 2 babies were nearby. The mother on the railing was within arm's reach. I got the impression that she wanted me to pet her. And so I did. She obviously remembered me, even from the limited contact we had. I'll never forget to keep in mind how smart all critters are in their own way.

    @lingth@lingth3 жыл бұрын
    • I believe they have. The first human beings to walk upright probably learned how to survive their environment by watching animals. As an example, in Great Britain they use pigs to find and unearth mushrooms. You can bet humans could not distinguish a good mushroom from a poisonous mushroom. Unless, of course, you watched what the animals ate. But humans have one more important lesson to learn; how to live together regardless of our differences. It's amazing how animals of different species can be together and not kill one another.

After a bad hurricane here in Florida, a baby squirrel lost its entire family & came running up to me & when I squatted down to see if it was ok, it ran up my arm & sat on my shoulder. I kept the lil squirrel until the roads were cleared up & took him to a wildlife lady who rehabilitates wild animals, teaching them how to hunt for food & then releases them back into the wild. That's just one of the wild animals I rescued. I have a picture of me with the squirrel sitting on my shoulder. My ex was shocked & had to take a picture, lol.

  • Lovely squirrel stories. We have grey squirrels that we feed in our back yard on a cement picnic table .. it's really bird seed or sometimes hamster feed and attracts as many squirrels as birds. My Siamese/Calico cat LOVES to watch the squirrels and she has tail envy; even though her own black tail is very expressive in it's own twisty way. LOL She seems to think her squirrel buddies are small baby cats with fancy tails. She's an indoor only kitty with a breezeway porch so there's no danger of them ever really meeting in person. It's all total admiration through the window glass!

  • I was wading in shallow ocean water in Florida once when I found three hermit crabs that had gathered together and arranged themselves in a straight line in order of their size. The three of them had gathered next to an empty sea shell that was one size better than the rest of them. Hermit crabs can only live inside of empty sea shells. As the crabs grow in size, they have to find a larger shell. I was forever amazed to see the communication and cooperation that had to have taken place for this to happen. Clearly, the plan was for the larger of the hermit crabs to move into a larger sea shell they had found. The next larger hermit crab waiting in line would then habitat the newly abandonded sea shell, and so on down the line. Animals are amazing.

After the train stopped for a short while near a park (while the crews changed) she came back on-board quite excited about the wonderful little creatures she had seen in the park. We laughed when she started describing squirrels! We just take them for granted, but to her they were marvellous little characters! • I mean yeah, but there are also countless stories of animals abandoning their young or even eating them. So the idea of being a shitty parent is a fairly universal concept amongst all of us creatures. Growing up I saw several barn cats eat their kittens heads off because the kittens were born deformed or some other odd reason. We had a cow who rejected both of her calves right after birth and we had to bottle raise them. and in those cases the calves were actually perfectly normal, the cow was just not interested in being a mother, (so we ate her). In fact it is more of a human trait for us to keep our unhealthy or abnormal offspring as most animal communities just do not do it.

    • And how precious and miraculous life is. Squirrels are small but so fast and good at hiding from possible threats. Yet if given a little space they will enter you life and simply co-exist without leaving any wreckage behind. Well. They will eat through a power cord for your Christmas lights. Years ago our phones all went dead. Before the age of the cellphone. It ended up that some little demon creature had eaten through about 6 wires.

  • Thank you for posting this video. I relate to it, because I once had rescued a baby squirrel. I chanced upon it in 1969 when I was studying in IIT, Kharagpur, West Bengal, India. It was a morning after a thunderstorm. I saw a half dead squirrel, fully drenched. I collected it in my handkerchief and took it to my Hostel Room. There I fed it milk from a dropper. I placed it a warm padded shoe box. (I was wary of baby squirrels as I had been bitten by one on my thumb, as a 10 year old. I had trapped the squirrel in a bird cage, and held it, thinking a baby squirrel wouldn't have teeth 😊). The next day I fed the squirrel some roasted groundnuts. The squirrel grew in strength and was a nice pet. I would carry inside my shirt, where it go all over my torso. After a month with me the squirrel jumped off the window. I searched and couldn't find it. Your statement of "a lost baby squirrel would even take to a human" made sense. Thank you again.🙏

  • when i was little my mom and i raised two baby squirrels. they showed up covered in leaves under my moms car. they must have fallen out of the tree. they were really little and the mom didn’t come for them so my mom took them inside and fed them the special milk we had from my baby hamster. she read on the bottle that squirrels were on the list of animals that could drink it. they were both boys so i got to name them Oscar and Otto from a tv show i watched back then. they were so amazing. so loving and sweet. giving them baths was the best. my mom read that squirrels leave their moms around 10 to 20 weeks so we let them go at around 15 just so they didn’t get too attached to us. it was sad to see them go but they both stayed and lived in our front yard in our two big oak trees. i even sometimes left sunflower seeds out for them on the porch. but one day they stopped showing up in the yard and trees. my mom went online and saw that they were old enough to start mating so they probably went off to find mates. i will never forget my sweet baby squirrels, they were one of the best childhood experiences i had.

My mother brought the babies indoors and me and my siblings fed them out of a plastic baby doll bottle filled with watered down cream of wheat cereal. The father and mother of the squirrels would come up and wait on the front porch every day until we brought the squirrels outdoors so they could see how they were thriving. Once they were big enough, we let them go off with their parents. After that experience, I've always looked at squirrels and other animals in a different light. They are so precious!

No success in my search so I went home, made him a comfy place inside a cat carrier and called my vet, who told me to buy baby formula and feed it to him with a syringe. I did it and the next day I transported him in a small box to the wildlife rescue center. It was a long bus ride but it was worth it knowing I had helped save that adorable critter’s life 🥰💕

  • I was the Squirrel- Lady at the EVC vet hosp. I worked at. The babies are so helpless & need to be cared for by medical people b/c of severe storms and dogs cats eagles hawks bluejays , ect... w/o proper immediate care they will die. I am so attached to these & all other of God's precious creatures. Please try to help any animal in distress. Call Wildlife service of your area, and search around all fallen trees w/ nests. They become extremely attached to you, and it is best for wildlife sanctuaries to rehabilitate the in groups to be set free in a safe place. I will always cherish each & every rescue. Also baby opossums, , and birds need us too. Any animal in distress!!! God bless that hiker!!!

  • I had this happen to me. After a hurricane came through the Boston area I had two young squirrels run out of the bushes and jump on my leg. They were malnourished so I took them in and cared for them until I could find an animal rescue that would take the squirrels for a small donation. I received pictures from the rescue for months after until the babies were old enough to be released. Still one of the most connecting experiences I've ever had.

    • After a Hurricane 1/2 way went through my son went outside, its so calm ! I yelled at him to come back in as the hurricane was swirling back! Son found 2 baby squirrels, he brought them inside , I told kids not to handle them too much , was afraid human scent would stop any rescuers , we put towels in an old aquarium and placed them in there to keep them safe and warm, next morning we opened the door, just leaving the screen door, sure enough the two little ones started a frantic chattering ! Outside in yard was a mama squirrel chattering ! Son placed the aquarium outside. And soon mama had came and got them both …..so many little birds and animals got blown away! Was amazing we could unite the little ones with their mama …..I wondered if she knew we had them ?

  • One day a squirrel sat on my foot t an outdoor area that was all concrete. We had no idea where she came from. That was three years ago. "Peaches", as my wife named her, has been part of our family for close to three years. She loves belly rubs from my wife and loves to be tickled. She loves her 5 level cage and is very tame and loving. She enjoys hiding nuts and running outside her cage on occasion but she always returns to her cage.
