  • When I was a kid, carrying a wooden gun, following my dad while he was hunting, our dog started yelping and running towards us from tree to tree. It was avoiding a golden eagle trying to hunt her. She was very large to a German Wire Haired Pointer female, at about 2.2feet tall at the shoulder and 70lbs. The eagle ignored my father shooting in the air to scare it away, and wouldnt leave our dog alone before my father took a really long stick from the ground and tried to hit it the eagle. And I swear my father did hit the eagle at least once with the stick before the eagle gave up. Our dog was unharmed, but in a hell of an adrenaline rush, trembling, and wouldnt leave my fathers side for the day. about 10 years later, my cousin, who worked in business that rented wilderness cabins got a call, where an irate woman demanded that "the companys eagle needs to return their cat immediately, or they would call the authorities for animal abuse."

    • @Mikko Valle there is no existing eagles are capable of carrying your German Wire Haired Pointer and just take off, golden eagles are one of the largest of all eagles species, pretty bold as well but they only weighs in at 10 to 15Ibs and flying off with 15Ib is their max, they don’t like to tangle on ground just to avoid injury. your dog is 70Ib, so even when they dive down and with all that velocity and their 1.77 to 2.4 inch hallux-claw or talons as many calls it, it wouldn’t do your dog much damage other than scratches and some small puncture wounds, but then again your dog will fight back when she realized if no help will arrive and if she gets a hold of of any part of that bird, it won’t end up pretty. So your dog was safe regardless. I’ve been a state park ranger for yrs and worked with biologist and conservationist, from what I was told, full grown bob cats, coyotes, wolves, cougars will often steal prey from these bird when they feed on land, especially big cats will often kill these bird if chance are given, On the other hand golden eagles sometimes will kill young bob cats and coyote pups as well. I own a pasture myself, owns 6 Dogo Argentino, 2 kangals 3 malakilis, 5 Boerboel, and 2 Presa canario, all imported working lines, for protection and farm work, we have golden eagles around here but never dear to come near to any of my animals or the dogs. But I did lost two cats and nearly my little pug if it weren’t for my girl Presa came to the rescue.

  • This was a neat episode. I live in Washington state, so I was able to see the mass Eagle migration one year, up by Mt. Vernon along the Skagit River. Also, last year I saw a Bald Eagle family "adopt" a juvenile Golden Eagle! I was watching the family rear and fledge for some time, when a new baby showed up... but it's plumage and bill were different, and it seemed a bit bigger. I was able to confirm it was a Golden through binoculars, and also while walking across the field across a pond from their nest, the Golden caught a draft just a couple stories above me, hovering for well more than long enough for me to get a good look at it. The whole family interacted like a unit, including the Golden. It was fed by the adults, it played games with the babies, they even roosted together! I never saw any adult Goldens, though! This was at Woodland Creek Park, in Lacey, Washington (right next to Olympia). There's a breeding pair of Bald Eagles the locals tell me have been returning to the same nests for decades- if not the nest at the park, they'll nest across the street at Lake Lois Reserve.

    • Birds have serious human competitor potential. Parrots and in particular have a lot of dexterity in their beaks for handling technology while having a sort of communication system already (not to mention they can communicate with humans) and some parrots live as long as you. Crows not so much, while they are extremely smart, they don't have good dexterity and REQUIRE tools unlike parrots, and I think they don't live long. . They do have that community shit going on though. Eagles seem to have a certain intelligence to them, however it's more personable traits like attacking things that aren't the smallest target. Dolphins are smart but technology would be extremely hard for them. Squids if they lived long enough could be pretty dangerous. Imagine an 80 year old squid who decided to start a society because he can finally see the big picture after happily swimming around the ocean for decades.

    • @@slowfudgeballs9517 Did you mean to respond to me? I don't see how your comment relates to my own, though I think your points are well presented, and generally agree. Just checking with you, so your comment doesn't get hidden under mine if you meant to post as your own comment. Otherwise, your observations on parrots is pretty myth exactly what I was thinking when I created an "alien" race of bird-like hominids (think anthros), largely led by parrot-like birds.

    • In WA state its not uncommon to see 5 eagles at once near the coast.

      @hia5235@hia52352 жыл бұрын
    • @@hia5235 Near the coast, yes, and I'll say there's a huge difference in Eagle population just between here (Olympia/Thurston) and Aberdeen/Grey's Harbor. I think the Black Hills (bottom of the Olympic Mountains) must be what creates the distinctly different populations. They're just not nearly as common along the Puget Sound, until you go North enough for them to begin traveling the Straight of Juan de Fuca/Deception Pass. That's where the coastal raptors will migrate along, whereas inland raptors migrate between the two mountain ranges, edging East as they move South enough to break free of the Cascades. I can honestly say that in 30+ years of living between Seattle and Olympia, other than rearing families, I don't think I've ever seen more than three Eagles at once, but I've seen several on multiple occasions while visiting Aberdeen's boardwalk.

  • I once came across a golden eagle eating a squirrel in the woods. When I walked up on him we both scared the crap out of each other but he settled down and continued to chomp down. Beautiful raptor. I tried to get closer and take a picture, I got about 10 feet away then he flew up into a tree with his snack. Really cool experience. Long before that though, I saw a bald eagle eating a freaking cat on the sidewalk in full public view with many people walking by on little creek road near ward's corner in Norfolk Virginia. The bald eagle was clearly a little nervous however the guy stood his ground and just kept eating that cat. Smart, majestic, incredible creatures.

    • @@belalabusultan5911 Yet, domestic cats are destroying and made more than 30 species of anything disapear in the wild. That's the main reason that kakapo and the bird kiwi are placed on islands that have no cats because these birds have no defense against land predators as they have none. wild cats are the only one that should be kept outdoors as they prey on the native ecosystem without destroying it completely. Domestic cats should be kept indoors.

  • Where I grew up, in a village near the Persian gulf, a baby was actually taken from its cradle by an eagle. The mother was working in the fields and left her baby alone in the cradle for a minute. The eagle was spotted in the air carrying the baby. By that time, it was too late. I was scared of eagles for a long time after that occasion, until I grew up and realized any larger kid can never be carried by an eagle.

  • The way that golden eagles pair up to take on wolves is nothing short of fascinating. One bird will swoop in and attack the wolf's face to try and blind it as well as keep it's mouth busy while the other swoops in to attack the side or neck. It's just so wild to think that an animal the weight of a bowling ball will willingly attack deer, goats, wolves, and even bears. Eagles are king in the air and they know it. At least til the sun sets and then owls try to bully them while they can't see as well.

    @mechanicobra@mechanicobra2 жыл бұрын
    • Eagles do sometimes target an unprotected wolf pup, not an adult. And eagles do not chase wolves off of their prey. That is quite false. Dude is just making stuff up. Actually what occurs is that when a wolf leaves their partially eaten to nap, eagles, crows, and coyotes start feeding on the unattended carcass. When the wolf returns, they scatter like roaches.

    • @@mechanicobra There are plenty of videos calling foxes "grown wolves" too LOL Also, eagles do NOT chase wolves off of their kills. That's utter BS from the uploader of this vid.

      @tekkkman7003@tekkkman70032 жыл бұрын
    • @@tekkkman7003 I didn't say anything about them chasing wolves of their kills. They WILL however go after a wolf or bear that gets too close to their nests. Not to hunt them obviously but to drive them off. And grey wolves and red foxes are plenty easy to tell apart. Especially when you can see them both hunted in the same video. Golden eagles can in fact kill things like mountain sheep, deer, and even coyotes and wolves.
