Is this TINY TIGER the new standard for SMALL SCALE armour? Vespid Models - TIGER 1 build review.

Love them or hate them there’s no denying that when most people hear the term ‘tank’ the first example that springs to mind is the Tiger. Even if by reputation alone, the Tiger 1 was arguably one of the most feared and well known tanks of its time.
It terms of model kits there is no shortage of choice with just about every main-stream model manufacturer offering their own spin on the iconic vehicle. More or less every scale, version and sub-variant has been produced in styrene over the decades with every modeller having some opinion on which boxing is the most accurate or the best.
A lot of are unfamiliar with Vespid Models as a manufacturer as they have only been active since 2020. I’d seen some of their releases online and as was curious to see if the hype was warranted. Although 1/35th is my favoured scale I do dabble in 72nd scale armour, so when the opportunity to build their new release Early Production Tiger 1 kit, I pounced on it.
Join me as I take a first look and review the kit as well as take you through the full build process of this lovely little 1/72nd scale Tiger 1.

  • I have discovered Vespid models a few weeks ago, when I bought 1/72 hetzer. I was really impresed by the level details they were able to provide with a such a small model. It is fantastic to get all those accesories, photo etched parts etc. provided in one box. I think I will certainly buy more kits from them. I have been trying to find compromise between time consulting builds and detailed models. For a while 1/48 tamiya panzer kits has been a nice option, but since awesome vespid models are available I am going to build more 1/72s from time to time. Nice to have so many possibilities. I wish they also made some airfield 17:44 vehicles, as Tamiya has done with 1/48. I was happy to add them to my 1/48 planes making a simple dioramas. You have made an excellent build. It looks sharp!

  • Hi Clayton! This little Tiger cub looks fantastic so far, and I am looking forward the next episode. I don’t think that I could try anything in this scale, as I have enough trouble with all the tiny parts in 1/35 scale. However, if I found a model that really appealed to me, I might be tempted to give it a go. You have done a great job with this little Tiger mate, and it will be interesting to see how you attack the weathering. Cheers for now!

  • Nice showcase of this neat little kit! As a mainly 72nd scale builder (+ the occasional 700th ship) I am really happy to see the recent surge of high quality 72nd kits by manufacturers such as Vespid, Flyhawk and others. They provide a straightforward way to get to a great model in a "relaxing" way (no copious ammounts of sanding/filling, glue coming off rubber parts or having to do serious improvements/investments in aftermarket). I might pick up one of those small Tigers (either Vespid or Border Model) to finally becoming a "Real Armour Modeller" by having completed a Tiger 1 😅

  • It's been a minute since I built a kit, but I remember the Holy Writ for such detail on kits was to paint the individual detail parts before attaching them to the model. You could spend hours and days studying the instructions, modifying the order of assembly and planning what parts you would paint while still on the sprues, etc. etc. etc. but I see a lot of how-to videos in which everything's attached and then the model's painted. Masking? "Where we're going, we don't need any steenking etc. etc." And just be careful with that paintbrush. It's kind of refreshing, really.

    @Donleecartoons@Donleecartoons5 ай бұрын
    • Thanks for your comments. Painting the parts on the sprues can be problematic 1.because you then have to remove them leaving the scar at the connection point…and 2. Trying to glue parts that have paint on them can be an issue because the glue melts the plastic and paint and can create a mess. At least that’s why I do things the way I do. But hey! If it works for you that’s awesome!🤩

  • Hi, fella! That was a cracking little build video, really enjoyed it! 👍🏻👍🏻 I’d got into the Vespid kits around four months ago....ordered a pair of Tigers and after opening the box, got back on the Internet and ordered up most of everything else! 😂😂 Funny thing is, this all started out with 1/72 King Tigers by Flyhawk Models! Those aren’t perfect but it’s the level of detail, etc, which kind of forgives the small imperfections...(running gear swing arms...)! Anyhow, back to the Vespid Tiger....my lower hull side walls, were slightly inclined, which buckled the interior bulkhead. I cut a matchstick to size and got round the problem that way but it’s as far as I’ve got, so it was lovely to see you pressing on and getting it all together....I’ll check ride the wheel and track set up, that you built...that’s a good going on and worth attempting! Right, I’ll leave it there but thanks once again.....I’ve “liked and subscribed”, so well done you, mate! 👍🏻👍🏻.....just had the Posty drop off a pair of Airfix’s 1/48 Gamnets....😜 TTFN from England!

Vespid is in the 1/72 scale surely the upper level of quality. The version from Flyhawk should be similar in this line of quality. Best wishes, Joachim

  • I generally love Tamiya kits, because they’re always good quality and it’s always all there and perfect. Saying that, I was really rather underwhelmed recently by their 1/48th scale Tiger 1 (Early Production Eastern Front). I couldn’t quite put my finger on why it was (the detail wasn’t mindblowing but Tamiya, at least in my experience always make really crisp mouldings so what detail there is, is really convincing, if that makes sense?). There wasn’t a hint of anything EXCITING in the box. There was no photoetch, the tracks were a pain in the arse because they didn’t know whether to go with single links or strips, so there was both in awkward to build shapes. Anyway, best to look further afield if you’re after an early Tiger 1 in 1/48th scale. I can’t remember the name of the usual suspect aftermarket photo etch company but you’ll know who I mean. That stuff was bang on.

    • I havent seen the kit you are speaking of and it is surprising to hear that Tamiya missed the brief in terms of the detail but just to be clear this is the 72nd Vespid Models kit and if you are looking for a small scale Tiger to build out of the box, you would struggle to find a better kid than this. Thank you for reaching out 😎

  • Nice build. I'm curious as why you didn't paint the wheels and tracks before making the sub-assembly: you might have to scrape off a little paint here and there, however it would have made the painting process a lot easier.

    @owenmayes2128@owenmayes21285 ай бұрын
    • Good question. I usually do that with my builds... but the thought of painting and then assembling all of those tiny road wheels was a bit much. Figured this way would be a lot quicker. This way the only rubber on the wheels I needed to paint was the rubber I could see. Hope that answers the question. Thanks so much for joining the conversation.

    @W98Dragon@W98Dragon4 ай бұрын
    • Hello again 😁 The holes you are talking about on the guide horns are very small at the base of the horn rather than through the whole thing. (At least on the early tracks) Extremely difficult to even detect at 1/72 I’d think? It’s an epic little kit though, so don’t let that stop you grabbing one!
