  • they really don't seem excited tho. that's my thing they're so like YEA THIS IS OUR NEXT MOVE SUPPORT US IN IT why do y'all look as somber as people at a funeral tho? there was no energy in the delivery of the platform and they showed like 2 seconds of what it looked like with no info about it and immediately went 'steven talk money' ??? that doesn't read as people who are making moves that align with their goals. also, got upset at someone i follow today saying how all the backlash they got is showing how people don't appreciate indie creators. what? they disrespected their fans that helped them achieve what they have so far and were arrogant/dismissive of what is possible for their fans to do as far as supporting them. if it's the whole 'people only want free stuff' argument, people who CAN SUPPORT THEM are MORE THAN WILLING to support them, even through this controversy. the argument that people don't respect indie creators is null (in this instance bc people definitely don't appreciate indie visual artists at all) bc it wasn't about people not wanting to support them, it was about them delivering awful messages and minimal warning or info about what their move was gonna be and basically walking away from all their fans who weren't stable enough to continue being with them. (and making themselves harder for new fans to even find them?) also, when does someone stop being 'indie' bc reportedly, they have TONS of money and one of them supposedly has a mansion and expensive car etc. i don't think indie people live in mansions. people have said they have a staff size comparable to a film production crew (idk how true that is bc i know nothing about how many people it takes to be a film crew) but people have also said that their crew is larger than channels larger than them with tons more content/busier upload schedule and more on screen staff etc so like.. when does someone stop being indie in this space? bc to me indie is like... a singular person or a very small group of people with very small budgets and very minimal staff help like no more than 5-10 people total producing things. edit: the mention of only wanting to watch a couple shows too reminds me, i also feel like they're arrogant in thinking that all of their fans are such huge fans that they watch EVERYTHING that they make, which isn't the case for most people it seems. from what i saw, many people only watch like one or two of their shows (mixed which ones they are cos not everyone was watching the same two shows) but yea i literally only started following them for puppet history and watched the rest out of not having more puppet history content to watch and they were easily digestible to watch so why not. paying 6 dollars a month to watch maybe an ep? of one show u like? (cos who knows what their upload schedule is gonna be like over there are they only going to upload one show at a time and it's not even gonna be one that people wanna watch so u paid for a month for their old content u can watch for free and then just get 4 (if they stay on the same upload schedule) new eps of a show u don't even care about? again.. there's no information about what they're doing with this platform and their content) like this whole thing was a mess and for them to have said they've been working months/years on this, it does not show. it feels like someone pitched it to them last week and they were like hell ye that sounds money making let's do this. (which, if the longer timeline is true, people should be extra concerned about giving them money if they're THAT unorganized they didn't think over months and years to a) plan this out better and b) present more transparent information about this next step. how many months till people start complaining about the service they provide, problems with paying or trying to back out of paying for it, poor customer service etcetc) seeing what we've seen now i fully believe that bringing the other staff on to talk about how great it is to work there and what their role was and if they were complaining about finances? (i must've missed that part cos it wasn't interesting to listen to imo) was just more manipulation from them to be like 'oh feel sorry for us we're hemorrhaging money somehow'. i mean in the previous ep they were talking about wanting to add an expensive matcha machine to the office... why do u need that for an office? but the thing about them going to another platform bc youtube and whoever are taking too big a cut from their funds is, now they have to pay for the maintenance of that site and servers. plus people have said they would have basically been trading what they have to cut for youtube to vimeo cos they're using vimeo server services now. and now, since they've had to rollback, they have the expensive of running that site AND losing big cuts to youtube so.. in the end, they just messed themselves up further. they could've easily added twitch streaming to their revenue (yea, i know there's a cut there too but man the growth they could've gotten if they did like Survival Mode or similar over there with the quality of visual presence they like to do. people would DREAM for that quality on twitch) and people got like.. stupid money to spend on twitch. i wish i had some people's incomes on there who gift out subs and give bits. i think saying stuff like we don't wanna appeal for advertisers is gonna hurt them too if any of them see that cos that's gonna turn advertisers away more than anything i feel. but yea as conclusion, they all had to sign off on this. there's no way the other two would've just let steven do this on his own cos they're all founders, this is their company etc. in some way, they all were in on it. honestly at one point tho i kept thinking did they lose a bet or like.. sold this company off to someone cos this.. is such a strange turn of events for this huge channel just starting to get a stable flow going for it.

  • All 3 of them agreed to this regardless of who had the idea. I don't care for Steven's content and really only tolerate him on Too Many Spirits. Their ghost files is ok, I think Ryan has lost his fear/belief, but I miss the true crime from their old unsolved series.

    • Yeah, I kinda got that vibe from Ryan during the last season of Supernatural on Buzzfeed :(

  • I think the fact thay they just dropped it so suddenly really added onto the backlash. I really like how Matpat put it in his episode in Mythical Kitchen where he said he gave the announcement of him leaving KZhead weeks in advance because he wanted to let his suscribers process the whole thing.

  • Luckily they put out an update video! I’m sure this initial upload was before theirs.

    • Yup! I'm glad they are still giving free content despite Watcher TV still being a thing

  • These things come down to greed and ego. In this case, imo they just really don't want to be categorized as youtubers. They see themselves as better than that (and imo that does come down to all 3 of them).

    • Yeah, sad but true it does come down to all those things

  • Yeah I still like Ryan and Shane’s dynamic but I do think it’s changed since Unsolved because Ryan isn’t really as much of a believer anymore. The buck stops at the CEO which is Steven Lim.

    • One could argue it must be the weight of running Watcher that's kinda put a damper on that energy. I mean he did seem eager about the idea of Watcher TV allowing new faces to be onscreen instead of it always being him and Ryan. I can't blame him for that.
