  • I’m a family medicine doctor and I think it’s really harmful to post this without discussing the potential health risks of colonic hydrotherapy. First there’s no guarantee that this is done under the supervision of a physician so there’s no standardization of the use of disposable equipment or what fluid is used (I heard some places use just saline water while others use a mixture of herbal supplements.) There are risks of perianal trauma with incorrect placement of the rectal tube and if patients have conditions like Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis, that can put them at risk of a flare or bowel perforation. For the majority of people, they can manage their constipation or bloating by increasing water and fiber intake and with regular exercise. There are also safe over the counter stool softeners such as miralax or fiber supplements like Metamucil. You can also do suppositories or enemas at home and sometimes acupuncture has also been found to be helpful! And for more difficult to manage constipation, there are other evidence-based options you can discuss with your doctor. In general, please talk to your doctor about much safer options instead of trying these trendy and expensive options that are potentially harmful! I am a huge Try Guys fan and loved their videos on prostate exams, mammograms, pregnancy etc. This one in particular though I think was entertaining, but educationally a miss :/

    • I don't know if this is a silly question, but what's the difference between an enema and a colonic? Is it just like a turbo enema or is it something else entirely?

    • An enema is where we take a syringe and inject fluid into the rectum to attempt to stimulate a bowel movement and flush out any hardened stool that may be at the rectum. So whatever water comes in, pretty much comes out right away. There are different types of enemas (tap water, soap suds, fleet) that have different components to help soften the stool. An enema is usually used in conjunction with other tools to help with constipation such as stool softeners, fiber intake, and suppositories to help your colon pass stool more easily when you’re backed up. I’ve never seen a colonic personally but what I’ve read and seems to be presented in this video is instead of a syringe, they are inserting a rectal tube that funnels gallons of water to fill up the entire six feet of your colon in an attempt to completely clean out all of the bowel in your large intestine at once. For the vast majority of people, this is something that is not necessary and can potentially cause injury. There are much safer options to improve your gut health!

    • Thank you for stating this! I used to work for a DNP (thankfully no longer work there as she should probably not have her license) who offered colon hydrotherapies, but I was expected to imply that the DNP would be doing them even though it was actually a nurse performing them and no patient history was taken to verify if they were a good fit for the procedure.

    • Agreed. I actually didn't like the video at all and I wish they didn't promote this pseudoscience. I understand that Zach is on a journey to find alternative treatments for his chronic pain but some of these can be dangerous. There are more worthy and proven alternative medicines out there like some parts of homopathy and traditional medicine like acupuncture and of course medical marijuana.

    • I'm a nurse and a couple things could be dangerous. You can perforate the colon/rectum leading to sepsis and death. You can upset the bacteria in the colon that is responsible for immunity which can lead to infections. The colon is much like the vagina insomuch that you have "good" and "bad bacteria which keeps everyone in check. It's a balance that is easily upset with colonics. This can also lead to infections, which could also lead to sepsis and death. People with diverticulitis can have material forced into the little pouches which can also lead to infections. The literal crap she's talking about helping is not gonna actually help with a colonic so, best bet is don't waste your money on this.

  • I work with endoscopy units for a living, and everyone - please don't do this without consulting a gastroenterologist. Your digestive system is a complex mechanism that cleans itself just fine for most people using all sorts of healthy organisms that are supposed to be there. Colonics completely destroys that equilibrium. If you're having issues, see a gastroenterologist because it could easily be something else, and they can help you diagnose and treat the actual root problem, usually without an experience like this (unless you need a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy, in which case there’s no avoiding bowel prep but at least you get cancer screening, confirmation of other conditions like diverticulitis, or therapeutics like polyp removal out of the experience) 👍🏻

  • Risks of Colonics: 1. Severe Cramping Awful abdominal cramping is one of the most common side effects of a colon hydrotherapy treatment. This occurs due to large amounts of water being flushed through the digestive system. Air bubbles can occur causing painful cramping, abdominal pain, a weighty feeling of fullness, and bloating. 2. Electrolyte Imbalance The colon is like a sponge and oftentimes clients can absorb too much water during a colon hydrotherapy treatment or over repeated treatments. Too much water can cause a severe electrolyte imbalance and side affects-including heart arrhythmia, nausea, vomiting, cramping, fluid on the lungs and even coma. 3. Bacterial Infection A bacterial infection can occur following a colonics treatment if the equipment used is not properly sanitized. This is why most states demand that any equipment used in colonics hydrotherapy is serialized and disposable so it can be replaced between clients. Contaminated colonics equipment may cause a bacterial infection anywhere along the digestive system. An infection can also result inside the colon if too much healthy bacteria are flushed away during the procedure. 4. Renal Failure Renal failure (or kidney failure) is a severe risk of colonics that has been linked to certain herbal preparations used over many colonics treatments. Renal failure will occur if the kidneys are unable to filter waste products out of the blood. 5. Bowel Perforation Bowel perforation, which actually results from damage to the wall of the bowel, can occur with colon hydrotherapy that is not performed by a professional. This severe perforation is usually caused by flushing the bowel with too much pressure and requires emergency surgery to repair. 6. Liver Toxicity The liver is closely related to the colon as both filter waste and toxins out of the body. If an unsafe herbal preparation is used in a colonics treatment, liver toxicity (or aplastic anemia) can occur if toxins remain in the blood. 7. Abscesses Studies show that abscesses can form after faulty colonic hydrotherapy treatments. An abscess or multiple abscesses can form due to damage to the walls of the colon. If the tissue becomes infected, pus can accumulate in sacs along the colon lining (similar to a condition called colitis). 8. Exacerbate Existing Health Issues A client should never undergo colon hydrotherapy treatments if they have existing health conditions-such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, internal hemorrhoids, rectal or intestinal tumors, heart disease, kidney disease, and diverticulitis. Also, any patient who recently underwent any type of surgery should avoid colonics altogether.

  • As someone with crohns, I definitely wish they had done a more thorough disclaimer about how these can be harmful. Just scrolling through the comments for a few minutes and I already read several comments of people wanting to try this now... I understand wanting to be respectful of the establishment they went to, but if people are struggling with intestinal issues and see this done on such a big platform (with only the briefest mention of potential negative consequences) I'm worried that people with undiagnosed IBD could end up in a lot of pain from trying this. When I was first diagnosed, it came as a surprise to both my doctor and I that I had several ulcers in my large intestine. If I had tried this before my diagnosis in hopes it would help me, without knowing I had ulcers... I'm sure it would not have been a pleasant experience. If anyone is reading this and struggles with intestinal/digestive issues, please please please talk to a gastrointestinal doctor before trying something like this.

Very few nutrients are absorbed there, just the stragglers the small intestines didn’t get. The risk of tearing, disrupting peristalsis (the rhythmic movement smooth muscle of the GI tract that moves food, chyme, and stool ). Manipulation can halt this process temporarily (called an paralytic ileus) and lead to serious and emergent issues like a bowel obstruction. Also, prematurely removing waste before the large intestines have done their job, it can lead to dehydration or even a fluid and electrolyte imbalance. This is scary because fluid and electrolyte imbalances can negatively affect all of your major organs, including your heart and kidneys.

Not to be too TMI but I had to recently prep for a colonoscopy and the first thing my GI doctor told me was that I'm going to be in pain for days afterwards because I have a chronic illness and it's gonna take a while for my intestines and stomach to readjust. They weren't wrong. It has been a painful readjustment. And I understand where Zach is coming from, as someone who also only used the bathroom once every 5 days (hence the procedure to figure out why) it can feel like you just need to flush everything out, but this doesn't seem like the correct way to go about it...

Hormones are also produced in the intestines (its called the second brain for a reason), so all the production would just be gone. I can only think about this being good if someone have a problem with pooping and clogging idk. And I guess if you do enemas regularly its a lesser version of this treatment.

    • Ptsd? Ppl really getting a glorified enema for ptsd. How is that gonna help unless your ptsd is popping. I get why it might help with some other issues of the gastric tracts but saying it cures ptsd is a bit much. Even the headaches and depression is questionable but maybe bad bowel movements can cause stress and hurt which causes such but PTSD? Also it's not possible this has no health effects if done regularly. We have so much beneficial bacteria in there we need. This is unnecessary unless a person has serious inpaction issues or possibly has injested something they shouldn't have so it passes through as fast as possible.
