Why The 70 Series Land Cruiser Never Has & Never Will Be Sold In The USA

While the 70 series is hailed as one of the best utilitarian/expedition vehicles on the market, it is interesting that it was never sold in the US, especially now with the recent 4WD craze that's been happening. Let's take a look at why the 70 series was never sold here, and more than likely never will be!
I'm actively seeking interesting cars to make videos about.

  • I would buy one in a heartbeat! I own a '96 80 series with 300k plus miles on it and I really appreciate Toyota's overbuilt and simple design philosophy.

    • No you wouldn't. People like you and most other people in the USA will never pay 80k on a barebone 70 series. That's why Toyota will never bring it. İt won't sell. You and i are stuck in the past and we don't pay anything more than 15-20k on a used truck.

    • Not true. American market loves value, these would not seem like good deals to most Americans. Toyota would need to sell a lot to make the investment worth it. For a vehicle that is very bare bones your average soccer mom would not be impressed. A person would have to decide between an lc79 or a v6 raptor and that would be a no brainer for most. For a lc76 you would be in pricing line for a sequoia and like I mentioned before most would take the larger more comfortable vehicle with luxury items with better mpg than a 70 series.

  • Speaking as a Cruiser Nerd who wants one.... The 70 series passes Euro and Aus crash testing on par with equivalent US crash test standards, so it's not that. The 1GR V6 that is in the gasser 70 series is also sold in the 2nd gen Tacoma, and 4th and 5th gen 4Runners, so it's not emissions. It's the 25% chicken tax on imported trucks. A base GRJ-70 runs about $45k USD then add in 25% tax and you're over $55k. With vinyl seats, manual transmission, late 80s HVAC controls and... little else. Want locking diffs? Aux tank? diesel motor? Tack on another $15k.... 500 people MIGHT buy them the first year they came out and then there would be no more sales.

    • @@fivefivesix-sevensixtwo4114 It is true that the 200 didn't see because of how expensive it was, but that doesn't mean the 70 would fare well. The average person just wants to look tough or adventurous, but they still want some luxury. Personally I'm like you, my Jeep is bare bones and that's the way I like it. • If you do import one chances are you’ll be importing nearly all parts as well since I doubt there are much or any LC 70 parts readily available in NA, or at a premium from some LC 70 enthusiasts. Starter gone? Gotta import it. Ain’t know the parts number? NA Toyota dealerships ain’t gonna know either and doubt they have access to it since they ain’t never sold one, and it ain’t their market, so there is no NA support for it. Likely gonna wait weeks or months for parts to arrive if it was shipped on a 🚢 or a ✈️ you may have to get your parts straight from Australia, Japan, whatever, the markets it was sold in And if your state requires diesel smog in a strict emissions state, them 25 - 38+ year old catalytic converters if they do have one may be pretty clogged up, shot, might’ve been an ex coal mine LC plus the usual 25+ year old car problems, esp if it very high mileage, well used, might be hella since you ain’t know the maintenance records 🤷‍♂️ You definitely gotta be a LC enthusiast to own a 70s in the US

  • The Jeep Wrangler gets annihilated every year in crash tests. The work thing is kind of wishy, washy. Yes, these trucks are small in comparison. But people forget that the Ford Ranger had a hold on the American working man just as much as the Super duty did. Obviously, the 70 series isn't going to be hauling a cattle trailer. But a guarantee that it will find its market. Ford took a leap of faith reviving the Bronco name. Which opened a path for the maverick. Believe me, the 70 series would sell to a lot of people. The 70 series had a slight redesign last year. With the addition of another engine option. I think they need to find a test market in the US.
