I was not here for this time I grew up around mw2 however even I can say that these graphics look fantastic for the time and even today they look flat out good
Bruh the game was mid in 2008 in terms of graphics. Compare it to Crysis, Far Cry 2, Bioshock, GTA IV or S.T.A.L.K.E.R

MGS4 in 2008 was amazing graphics wise. Beats farcry, bioshock, GTAIV and stalker. Crysis back in the day however was a big holy shit graphics wise.

MGS2's Animations and Graphics already blew me away as a kid. Back when you thought graphics cant become better than that, then MGS3 and 4 came. Good times.
Don't forget Metal Gear Online! ❤ By the way while MGS4 primarily was aiming for 30 FPS (and failing) it actually had an adaptive frame cap and would/could sometimes hit 50 or 60 FPS. Two good examples being the first floor of the building you are meant to meet Rat Patrol in (pre encounter) and the NVG function on the Solid Eye.
Yeah I noticed that it could go up to 60 some times, but it was soooo rare haha. Also, I want to make a video about MGO2 as well, but probably won't happen before the Master Collection comes out.

@@MaxNarutoUzumakiVerstappen An easy way to achieve 60fps is to turn on thermal vision, i don't know whether the draw distance is reduced or if there's more culling but it works depending on where you are, looking at the ground helps.

MGS4 had unlocked framerate on the PS3. If you used NVG and First person view, you get 60 in close areas in real hardware. Is not locked at 30.
I also remember watching the sky and seeing those fluid character movements as well.

Played this game a couple months ago and the only problems I've encountered are some little performance drops when you enter an area where alot is going on f.e the motorbike gameplay with Big Moma. Otherwise the game is running perfectly most of the time from the beginning to the end on 60 FPS and even 4K if your pc can handle it

Hey, great video! Just one correction: MGS4 was not locked to 30FPS on PS3. The game has an actual FPS cap of 60 and runs with double buffer v-sync. Of course, since the game can basically never reach 60, the double buffer v-sync is always in effect and attempts to lock to 30FPS instead. However, there are a rare few spots in the game where, if you go prone and point the camera directly at the floor, you can actually see the game run at 60FPS. Edit: Ah, it looks like someone already posted this information in the comments, sorry about that.

Seeing as emulation allows me to use the pressure sensitive buttons on my PS3 controller and it's looking like the 'master collection' is not going to allow this, I'm glad I have this option.
Nice vid man ive always wanted to try MGS franchise im a Sam Fischer fan but never gave a chance to Snake, and i dont wanna just go straight to MGS5 whithout knowing the origins, be starting with the first 1 than ill certainly come back here for MGS4 run
So let me clarify some stuff about mgs4 porting. There are 2 major situations here, the first is the licensing with ipod and songs and voice actors. The 2nd obstacle is the system calls the game uses in relation to the cell processor and due to items like the ipod, the source code would have to be modified.
If they are porting the source code to other systems they can easily go and replace the ipod model with a more generic design and tweak any details regarding that. Now, the voice actors there's no way to go around it, just pay them for whatever they deserve. Then again, this is Konami we are talking about, and they don't care about their games but only making money and pachinko machines. Like people is even surprised about it.

i just played a few monts ago on both, the retail RPCS3 Build and on the Illusion Build just for MGS 4. Both run very well but since the new big performance update that came just while I was playing the game, the retail Build is definitely the best for me! ran almost constant on 60 FPS with no prerendering caches in the middle of the game (like in illusion for example) the game precaches everything at gamestart (takes up to 30 Minutes for me) and than everything runs at least it does with every patch from the wiki enabled

When playing on RPCS3, did you play with the disc or ROM? A few months back I bought the PS3 disc and was going to play it but didn't for some reason. Either it wasn't possible or was going to be a major pain
great video, though it could've come out before my recently finished playthrough 😅 The game ran very well on my r5 3600, with some stuttering and fps drops in some codec calls and the eastern europe missions, but overral it's pretty playable. We'll see if we ever get a native PC version, or a port at least...

@@DanielSlva Yes, you just need to use the recommended settings, maybe modify them a bit according to your PC, but the game can be finished. Just a few crashes and fps slowdowns here and there but it playable.

MGS4 was developed to fit perfectly to the PS3 hardware architecture, thats what makes it so hard to emulate. It's like trying to run iOS on a random Android phone

If mgs4 comes out in a master collection, and assuming konami does a good job (lol), this video could become obsolete. I always appreciate these however, since it seems like there are always pros and cons, like with the previously covered MGS2, which was also already on PC
If it happens I'll make a new updated video for MGS4 then. Just like I'll do for MGS1, 2 and 3 when Vol. 1 comes out. But I suspect that emulation will continue to be the best option...
By the time we get 4 (if ever), of course this video will be obsolete, it will have been years. There will have been huge advances in PS3 emulation with new guides and configs. But emulation itself will never be obsolete.

I tried playing this about a month ago... and applying the v2 update to the game would cause it to crash right before reaching Ocelot in Chapter 1. Had to go back to V1... Did RPCS3 manage to update that? I remember having to use a patch code, but the game would still crash.

did u notice any issues in the monitor displays ingame that just shows some color blocks and some codec calls having no audio and sometime some wierd noises in codec calls?

In my experience, using the lllusion Build was the only solution to constant crashing during the B&B Corps section of act 1. I fiddled around with settings a bunch and installed all the recommended patches, but nothing fixed it besides switching builds entirely. The normal build had tons of other crashes in my time spent with it, but Illusion only gave me one crash in act 3. I have a Ryzen 5600X, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, and a GTX 1060 6GB. I tried running it at 4K initially, but 1080P was a lot more consistent, albeit a little less than perfect.
I did a full playthrough earlier this year using the main build and the recommended settings from the wiki. I only had one, consistent crash, right at the start, when you have to crawl under the truck, the game would always crash, I fixed it by simply waiting for the game to force Snake to crawl under it and after that it was smooth sailing. I crashed once more during the motorcycle run midway through (on my second go, I had played that part earlier with no crashes but I didn't save, when I played it again it crashed, I think I fixed it by just restarting my PC). Other than that I think I had a minor texture glitch happen once but that was it, pretty much perfect all the way through, tho I didn't get a locked 60, pretty much all of the time the FPS was better than on original hardware tho. Btw, my setup was a Ryzen 5 5600g, RTX 3060 and 16 GBs of RAM
Thanks for listing your specs, i always found it difficult to try and work out which build/options for rpsc3 would work best with my 5600x because secondhand information is limited and its a bit tedious to test out everything yourself cuz the ppu compile takes over an hour for each install LOL

I've looked at a few other MGS4 emulation videos and they were all way off (im still learning, i've just built myself a gaming PC). This is the best video I've come across around emulating this game. If Master Collection Vol.2 comes with MGS4, there’ll be no point of certain easter eggs that mentions PS1 or PS3. And they need to rewrite PS1 emulator too.

Hey Ocelot, I've seen most of your videos about MGS emulations in the past and I was wondering...Does the game run smoothly at 1080p or even the original resolution? I don't have a problem with low resolutions and bad graphics as long as the game is playable. I remember trying to play it half a year ago and it had some 1 hours long load times and 40 fps max or something. How is the emulation of MGS4 in general? Apart from 4K resolutions
As a rule of thumb, if a game is running fine on 4K, then it will run extra fine at 1080p or lower. Though if it will run well on your PC, that depends on your CPU.

Regarding pressure sensitive buttons - I highly recommend simply swapping L1 with L2 and R1 with R2 button bindings in the controller menu. This doesn't affect the whole control scheme too radically and it actually makes the control scheme more akin to modern shooters with L2 aiming for and R2 for firing.
MGS4 wasn't capped at 30 but the times it was visibly above 30 weren't frequent and were hard to detect, except for the moments where it ran super smooth like when you went into first person facing a wall.

Do you have any idea if r7 5800x3d is better than the 5800x for emulating this game? i dont know what to go for, if the extra cache is gonna do anything for the game or the clock speed is more important.
I believe the v-cache doesn't do anything for RPCS3, unfortunately. But for PC games in general it makes a huge difference, so it might make sense to get 5800X3D because of that.
Second this, get the x3D anyways because esport titles will run over double the frame rate comparatively

MGS4 wasn't capped at 30fps at all. In fact, it ran at an unlocked framerate, and it was extremely inconsistent. Game run mostly at 30fps (with some heavy dips here and there), but some parts of the game could actually run above that and even at 60, mainly when you equipped your solid eye in night mode. But anyway the point is, the framerate wasn't capped at all. Nice video anyway, I hope we can see MGS4 included in Master Collection vol. 2, even though it would require an enourmous amount of work, and we all know today's Konami.

I know this video is 4 months old now, but all the recommended settings did was make the performance worse. I tried various combinations, trying one at a time, and I just went back to default plus the recommended settings for MGS4 on the wiki and it runs better. The settings that didn't worsen the performance only seemed to cause some audio issues without actually improving the performance.

As I understand it, such a long compilation will allow you to remove the compilation of Ppu modules when you get to other levels, right?) It would be interesting to see a similar guide that would show such settings that would be aimed at the visual component, that is, the best graphics. It does remove a lot of waiting. After you enter a new level it freezes for a few secnods on the loading screen and you're good to go. For the graphic I would there's not much you can do other than upping the internal resolution to something more extreme. Increasing the default resolution wouldn't do anything as far as my knowledge go, and I think it even adds some instability to the game. Also the UI assets don't go higher than 720, though I might be wrong about that

@@komugi0221 The Wiki also has a cool method of dealing with stuttering and sound (they give a link to version Rpcs3 0.0.15, you may have read this method). back in 2006 I bought a ps3 just to play this game....and kept playing it during 5 years....online mode was awesome!
I've played it in the custom build a year ago (I think), I had about 20-40 FPS depending on what was happening. I have Ryzen 5 3600 and GTX 1660 Super. I am not sure what would be the performance now so I'm gonna ask: How much was performance impacted since your last video, if you had the same hardware then? There should be about 10% difference between Ryzen 5 3600 and i5 9600K with yours being 10% faster.
I'd say the difference is significant but not huge. For example: on the lowest points of the game (in terms of performance) I was getting around 18 fps on Rajkosto's build and now I get around 26 fps on the main build (both at 4K).

hey, ive got an i7 9600k and a 3070 and i eat shit most of the time during gameplay, like 20% of the time dipping into 10fps or something on 1920 resolution, i assume youve got an i5 9gen and i copied all of your settings, but it doesnt seem like it runs so bad on your system, im trying to figure out whats going so horribly wrong on my end? the only thing ive heard people talk about i guess is using the USA version of the game, while i got the EUR version, is the difference really that big or is it probably something else? should i get the USA version?

After 3 days of trying to make this work i gave up , it crashes alot , even when i downloaded the canary patch , and the 2.0 version and changing the setting by copying others and my own try and error .. it was unplayable either the game crash or the sound dissappear or the game stutter ..
My emulation kept crashing at Difficulty Screen and now it works thanks but i got no audio from the "tv programs" Actually forget it the MB vrm Mos just overheated 😢

I had the same problem. You have to mess around with the audio buffer duration and time stretching, that made it better for me, but it didn't go away completely.

If I remember correctly, there was an installation screen when you load up the game but it doesn't even make it to that, literally just a black screen. Are there any solutions to this issue? @@radmehrshowtry Linux it might work better AMD drivers. Nvidia is more stable then Radeon in this emulator. The 2600 is a little slow.

Emulation heavily relies on having a powerful CPU. Native PC games handles the GPU.
