Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
There must be lights burning brighter somewhere
Got to be birds flying higher in a sky more blue
If I can dream of a better land, where all my brothers walk hand in hand
Tell me why, oh why, oh why can't my dream come true, oh why
[Verse 2]
There must be peace and understanding sometime
Strong wind of promise that will blow away the doubt and fear
If I can dream of a warmer sun, where hope keeps shining on everyone
Tell me why, oh why, oh why won't that sun appear
[Bridge]
We're lost in a cloud with too much rain
We're trapped in a world that's troubled with pain
But as long as a man has the strength to dream
He can redeem his soul and fly (He can fly)
[Verse 3]
Deep in my heart, there's a trembling question
Still, I am sure that the answer's... answer's gonna come somehow
Out there in the dark, there's a beckoning candle, yeah
And while I can think, while I can talk, while I can stand, while I can walk
While I can dream, oh, please let my dream come true, oh, right now
[Outro]
Let it come true right now
Oh, yeah

  • Elvis was my dad’s absolute favourite. All his life he never changed. Elvis died on my dad’s birthday. Every year on my dad’s birthday, he would start his day by playing Elvis, and wouldn’t turn it off until the next morning. My dad recently died in July, and I’m going to continue the tradition of listening to Elvis on my dad’s birthday as long as I live.

I never seen my dad and uncle so upset, he made a lot of mistakes with raising us, but he was a hell of a man and was talented and smart and one of the kindest people. I feel terrible for my dad and uncles bc they will never get to hear their dad sing this to them again. I’m gonna miss him.

I was born a decade after Elvis died but I am truly hoping that I live long enough to see someone like him reappear in the music industry before I shuffle off of this mortal coil. I'm not getting my hopes up based on where music and society in general is at right now.

  • I'm writing these words on December 5th, 2023 and I'm sixty four years old. Who cares right? Well please, let me explain: I never was an Elvis fan. Now hold on. Some of his songs I did like but one should understand that I discovered M. Presley late in his career as he was on the decline and well, we all know about how this ends. This song though is extraordinary. No special effects, no bling, just him and a microphone delivering a song that was arranged the night before! Every time I hear this song it breaks my heart and hits me like nothing else. How is it so relevant to this day? Through these troubled times of hate, wars and rising fascism, all the words of this song make sense to this day! How can it be so perennial? How did he perform this song with such fortitude and honesty? A musician myself I can assure you that we all stop in our tracks when this song comes on. How is this possible so many years later? I'll tell you why: It's a prayer Hence its valour

    • It rips my heart out -- and I think it would rip Elvis' out too -- whenever I run across someone who believes/was taught that Elvis was racist. He had many personal problems but no one needs to make the man worse than he was. Elvis grew up in a mostly black neighborhood, and all his boyhood friends were black children; he grew up loving black gospel and spirituals; he admired and supported black musicians; and one of his closest friends was James Brown. James Brown was the first person to arrive for Elvis' wake and always spoke about him as his brother. James Brown was a proud black man and did not kiss ass for any white man. I don't know why or how such an ugly rumor got started, or why so many black Americans believed it so wholeheartedly, but I've heard the "shoeshine" story and there's no basis for it. None. You can read in Dionne Warwick's book when she talks about meeting Elvis (her aunt Cissy Houston, Whitney's mother, was Elvis' backup singer). At the time Dionne was brand new to the music industry. The first thing Elvis said to her was that HE was a fan of HER music. Then he got on stage and told his audience to go buy Dionne Warwick's new album.

    • Elvis is The king. Elvis is the greatest solo artist and The Beatles are the greatest band. 1 out of every 3 records sold in the U.S. in 1977 was an Elvis record. If soundscan had been around, Elvis would have had no less than 40 albums on the hot 100 at the same time. The Beatles haven’t even come close to that. At no other time in music history in western culture did the sale of guitars ever explode or increase as they did when Elvis burst onto the scene. On Elvis’ records was where his guitarist, Scotty Moore, invented rock and roll guitar. Anyone who can read sheet music knows that Moore initiated the technique known as “power chording”. It’s an alternate chord figure that goes with everything. It’s mostly used by heavy metal and Punk Rock guitar. When Elvis released his first album 85 percent of record players sold were only capable of playing 45’s or Eps. By his fourth album, this almost completely flipped to where they were now selling more players that could play albums too. Elvis was the number one artist on the charts in 50’s, no.2 in the 60’s, no 9 in the 70’s He didn’t write a song but his sheer raw performing talent, his phrasing of a song and ability to make a song absolutely his were all so extraordinary that someone like Chuck Berry - who was a legend and who wrote all of his own songs - still said that Elvis was ‘the best and the best there ever will be He became one of the most significant pop culture icons of the 20th century before passing away at the young age of 42. To this day, he remains the best-selling solo artist of all time, racking up an estimated 600 million to one billion in album sales. The influence of Elvis Presley on his fellow singers and musicians is incalculable, and many of them have gone on the record to say so. The following people became musicians because of Elvis…McCartney, Lennon, Ringo, Harrison(was a musician but changed his goal to rock after hearing Elvis), Buddy Holly (was a musician but changed from country to rock after seeing Elvis on the Lousiana hayride in Lubbock) Elton John was classically trained but changed rock) Mick Fleetwood, Jimmy Page, All The Beach Boys, Keith Richards, Rod Stewart, Roger Daltry, Robert Plant, Steven Tyler, Klaus Meine(Scorpions lead vocalist)Ronnie Milsap, Bob Dylan, Tom Jones, Hendrix (mom took him to an Elvis concert when he was young that’s when he decided to play music) Brian Setzer of The Stray Cats, Glen Campbell… that’s just to name a few Elvis has sold more than 1 billion records worldwide as announced by his record company. (Point of contention for Beatles fans) They can not find one official announcement by their record company stating The Beatles have sold 1 billion records and according to McCartney and I quote “If The Beatles have sold a billion records then somebody owes me the other half of my royalties.” Brian Setzer, “Everything in popular music is a tribute to Elvis” Carl Perkins, “Everyone has their own ideas about what rock is. But make no mistake, The first time anyone ever did what was called rock-a-billy was when Elvis, Scotty and the boys started recording” Roy Orbison, “Elvis was the firstest with the mostest”… Dick Clark, “I know he didn’t write the songs but there isn’t anybody or act in rock and roll history that was more influential than Elvis” ca.1990 “There are some songs only Elvis could sing” Dick Clark, ca. 1987 Lennon, “Before Elvis there was nothing” Bob Dylan, “I don’t look at myself as a ‘poetic genius’ ‘voice of a generation” or anything like that, I just want to be Elvis”….as told to Ed Bradley of 60 minutes around 1997 Bobby Womack black performer and producer, “Elvis sent a shockwave through the black community like nobody I have ever heard before. Now that’s power” B.B.King, “Elvis had an influence on all of us. They didn’t make a mistake when they called him the king” Little Richard, “About every 1000 years God sends the world a messiah, Elvis was ours” Lenny Kaye (lead guitarist for the Patty Smith Group and a musicologist) “It doesn’t happen very often that you can go to Mount Olympus to see a performance. Elvis functioned as a God”….his review of going to Elvis at Madison Square Gardens concert. Glen Campbel, “Elvis is the best singer that ever lived” Writer of Mary in The Morning, “I think Elvis was the best singer ever” Trisha Yearwood, “You’ve got to be pretty bold to try and take on an Elvis vocal performance” Comedian Eddie Murphy, “Richard Pryor and Elvis were the biggest influences on me. I just thought they were the coolest people ever” Tom Jones, “Elvis made a song different simply by the way he sang it” Dennis Miller, ‘The jury has been out on the who was bigger Elvis or The Beatles a long time ago. You don't see a need for thousands of Beatles impersonators worldwide do you?’ Elvis hit a level in cultural and music history that was so high he simply cannot be assessed in terms of popularity. This isn’t debatable. Elvis was by far more influential than anyone before or after. I put a range of music people as to what they said about Elvis to make the point. There’s Elvis and then there’s everybody else….. “Elvis had an influence on everybody with his musical approach. He broke the ice for all of us.”-Al Green “Elvis is the best ever, the most original.” -Jim Morrison “Elvis Presley possessed genuine rhythm guitar chops” - Johnny Cash “Nobody can sing blues better than Elvis”. -Jackie Wilson, "Nobody can sing the gospel better than Elvis" -Mahalia Jackson “I remember Elvis as a young man hanging around the Sun Studios. Even then, I knew this kid had a tremendous talent. He was a dynamic young boy. I was a tremendous fan, and had Elvis lived, there would have been no end to his inventiveness.”-B.B. King “He was a unique artist, an original in an area of imitators.”-Mick Jagger “He was just amazing and spectacular. He really opened the door to my whole love of music. Because of him, and because of the choice of his material, I found Smiley Lewis [and] all those great singers.”-Robert Plant “Elvis was the king. No doubt about it. People like myself, Mick Jagger and all the others only followed in his footsteps.”-Rod Stewart “You have no idea how great he is, really you don’t. You have no comprehension-it’s absolutely impossible. I can’t tell you why he’s so great, but he is. He’s sensational.”-Phil Spector “There have been a lotta tough guys. There have been pretenders. And there have been contenders. But there is only one king.”-Bruce Springsteen “I wasn’t just a fan, I was his brother. He said I was good and I said he was good; we never argued about that. Elvis was a hard worker, dedicated, and God loved him. I love him and hope to see him in heaven. There’ll never be another like that soul brother.”-James Brown “When I first heard Elvis’ voice, I just knew that I wasn’t going to work for anybody; and nobody was going to be my boss…Hearing him for the first time was like busting out of jail.”-Bob Dylan

    • “Elvis Presley is like the ‘Big Bang’ of rock ’n’ roll. It all came from there and what you had in Elvis Presley is a very interesting moment because, really, to be pretentious about it for a minute, you had two cultures colliding there. You had a kind of white, European culture and an African culture coming together-the rhythm, OK,, of black music and the melody chord progressions of white music, just all came together in that kind of spastic dance of his. That was the moment.” -Bono “Ask anyone. If it hadn’t been for Elvis, I don’t know where popular music would be. He was the one that started it all off, and he was definitely the start of it for me.”-Elton John “Elvis is the greatest cultural force in the 20th century. He introduced the beat to everything, music, language, clothes, it’s a whole new social revolution - the ’60s comes from it.”-Leonard Bernstein Deep Purple's lead singer and frontman, Ian Gillan, a damn good singer in his own right, said: " he was the greatest singer that ever lived." Henry Pleasants, Classical Music Critic in his book “The Great American Popular Singers” (1974). Elvis had a magnificent voice and towards the end of his life, he enjoyed singing in a somewhat operatic style, displaying his amazing range. Opera star Kiri Te Kanawa told Michael Parkinson that the young Elvis had the greatest voice she had ever heard. The tenor Placido Domingo similarly enthused in an interview in Spanish magazine Hola in 1994: “His was the one voice I wish to have had.” Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel told The New York Times in 2007 that Presley was: “very classically orientated with his voice and diction and very sincere and wanting to get everything perfect.” The australian Elvis Network there is an article called "the 50 voices of Elvis" and a lot of voice specialists (great) oppinion of Elvis. Pawarotti is on record saying " I can't sing as Elvis, but he can sing as I !" Elvis was not an opera singer and whether or not he could have been does not matter. What made him so different was not his so-called opera singer range but the utter freedom of his singing. Record producer John Owen Williams says of Elvis: "People talk of his range and power, his ability and ease in hitting the high notes. But the real difference between Elvis and other singers was that he could sing majestically in any style, be it rock, country, or R&B - because he had soul. He sang from the heart. And that is what made him the greatest singer in the history of popular music.” Only singer in music Hall of Fame Rock, Country, Blues, Gospel. "Even in his laziest moments, Presley was a master of intonation and phrasing, delivering his rich baritone with a disarming naturalness. And when he caught a spark from his great T.C.B. Band, Presley could still out-sing anyone in American pop. You can hear it here on inspired versions of Muddy Waters' Got My Mojo Working, Wayne Carson's Always on My Mind, Chuck Berry's Promised Land, McCartney's Lady Madonna, Percy Mayfield's Stranger in My Own Hometown, Dennis Linde's Burning Love and Joe South's Walk a Mile in My Shoes..." - "Presley's voice was remarkable in the sense that, through it, he touched people in a way only great artists can do. (In fact), the people he touched are as diverse as humanity itself and, because of that his popularity has transcended race, class, national boundaries, and culture. There is no simple answer about why that is so, all I can say is he had that magic. - John Bakke, professor emeritus of the University of Memphis, in an interview with the US State Department, transcripted by UNUSINFO on July 18, 2006 on the legacy of Elvis Presley. I think it was a combination of Elvis range, his voice, the feeling and the manerism (hickups, sighs, ahs and ohs etc. ) that made Elvis special [his way of moving, his looks, way of dressing and choices of styles, was just a big bonus] I felt that Elvis was underestimated in a fairly important part, so I wrote a part of the evaluation about Elvis in a long sentence.
