  • PLEASE NOTE: Just an update, use car exhaust paste instead of silicone to seal the pipes to the lid, silicone finally melts after long durations of use. I have had no issues with car exhaust paste

  • Great video, thank you!! Suggestion: instead of using silicone to seal the copper pipes in place, use super glue and baking soda - super glue first, then baking soda until done. It sets up instantly, hard as steel, and is easy to finish. (Military helicopter technicians use the technique to patch chips in helicopter blades.)

  • If you cannot plug the vapour hole in the jet coil, all the alcohol will evaporate. I suggest using a new, unaltered lid for storage and store the wicks/jet coil in a small cotton bag. Cotton will let the wicks dry and keep them clean as well. Cheers from Alberta, Canada.

  • Great video. You need to get yourself an "emp" tubing cutter, it has three wheels, two wide ones at the bottom which acts like rollers, and the top wheel is the actual cutting wheel, the device clamps around the tube,tighten the thumb wheel and rotate it while simultaneously tightening the thumb wheel, makes a super clean cut in a snap. I usually dril my gas hole in the copper tubing, then bend the tube around my mandrel, it put the hole directly under the upper radius,kind of an OCD of mine...lol Thanks for sharing!

Then when you want to store the burner, just screw the other jar into the lid you epoxied on. While this makes it twice as tall to store, it protects the soft copper coil from damage.

  • I used thinner copper tubing and did the same with questionable results! Instead of doing the tight wrap I did a rather loose wrap over distance as some other video showed , then all you do is push horizontally to get the loops together. However as he will tell you a bit later in the video you need to put a tiny hole in the tube and as we all know tiny drills are not long drills so before making a tight loop of copper tubing get a vertical hole in the pipe. My questionable result was from drilling a hole after getting the loops tight. That directed the flame away from the tubing thus defeating the vaporization process.

  • Hi Tony! Excellent idea. I've been wondering how to heat my greenhouse to keep my seedlings safe. I have a small greenhouse, about 25x16. How many of these would I need in that size space? Is one or two enough?

  • Nice video thanks for the demo but if you watch Copper Annealing - 3 Steps video you will see how soft the copper pipe can be for bending and you can do this before you fill with sand and bend plus if you drill your hole first and use that as your centre point you can get it in the middle Thanks Bob in the UK

    @woodworks2123@woodworks21232 жыл бұрын
    • Around a pint and half I guess maybe. I ran it for nearly a week continuous and it still had just under half left

  • Great video, I just subscribed, and am planning to make one of these myself. Just curious, that looks to be a one liter jar so I'm assuming approximately 750ml of alcohol, what is the burn time?

  • Hello, I’m new to this site of Tony, I really like this video, can I ask Tony about the glass jar. There are lots of big jars, ones used for mince meat, gherkins etc, these have seals in the lid so would these jars work or do we really need the same jar used on this project? Really good presentation,.

    @brynspooner@brynspooner5 жыл бұрын
    • Any jar would work as its not under pressure and does not get hot

      @simplifygardening@simplifygardening5 жыл бұрын
    • @@simplifygardening i might be wrong but i beg to differ,,the coil transfers lot of heat back down into the fuel where it vaporizes and pressure builds in the jar and this also helps push the fuel up the wick ,,i think the jar will have some pressure but so long as its venting through the hole it should be safe enough,but the jar lids should have a rubber seal,some do some dont

  • Perhaps you could place the burner inside a large clay flower pot. That may help distribute some extra radiant heat. Maybe with a clay saucer on top if you could drill out a large hole to vent the flame? Also, You could try using a two-part kneadable plumber's epoxy or J.B Weld to seal the copper? (after heat testing of course.) Great project. Since this burns cleanly, it might also be used for an emergency heat source in a power failure. Update: Oops just read you did use the J B Weld.

    • A fantastic way to use them just be mindful it doesnt crack as these put out much more heat than candles

      @simplifygardening@simplifygardening5 жыл бұрын
    • @@simplifygardening, Yes may crack unless the hole is big enough...and the pot dense enough to resist the high heat. Going to try making a couple of these before next winter. Always looking for low cost ways to heat my 10' x 32'greenhouse. I'm experimenting with a solar "heat sync" pod attached on the south side. I'm using a 12 volt fan to pull heat inside the greenhouse to heat up black water barrels during the day. Theoretically, the barrels will radiate heat back out during the night. A couple of these jar heaters my be just the thing to help supplement the "heat sync".

      @dl7919@dl79195 жыл бұрын
    • I've seen the same idea with candle heaters. I was just thinking that a section of clay stovepipe would be perfect. Tall like a couple feet much thicker and very heat tolerant. The terracotta pipe sections come in square or round. Deffinately just updated my idea on how to do it.

  • An excellent project Tony and I shall definately be building a few of these 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 A few questions for you 😀.... What would you say is the smallest efficient drilled burn hole you could use? (I can go down to about 0.010") Any advantage of having more coils and use a larger jar? Do you need to tape over the burn hole when not in use to prevent evaporation? Compared to the 100 hr candle, does this give out more heat? Sorry for all of the questions......Many thanks of this one.................Cheers mate....

    @MuddyBootz@MuddyBootz7 жыл бұрын
    • Hi, mate yes this will give out a shit load more heat than the candle. No need to tape over the hole when not in use as the evaporation only works when heated. I wouldn't use more than one coil per jar and if you have the car filler putty use that instead of silicone as it will hold the coil better. make sure your drill hole is straight I had to straighten mine as the flame wasn't riding right initially but easy to do and works brill now. The flame must turn that blue colour or you won't get a clean burn. a small drill hole is preferable otherwise it will produce too much gas and blow out your flame, but not too small that the flame can't be supported. glad you liked the video and hope this lot helps :)

  • I've used bootlaces cotton is best ...easier to get up the hole. I have used parachute cord (Nylon) didn't wick very well. It might have something to resist solvents since it is genuine US surplus.
