Video Summary:
Hey, this is Leo for Actualized.org. In this video, we're going to talk about what is ego.
Let's talk a little bit about what ego is. I'm sure you've heard about it. I'm sure you've heard people talking about the problems that the ego can cause for you. You've probably heard about ego death. You've probably heard about both positive and negative sides of ego.
Let's talk about ego and, specifically, about who how you can understand this concept and relate it to success and personal development. It's how to get more success in your life by understanding ego.
What is ego? Ego is basically that aspect of yourself that you consider to be "you." When I say your name and you think, "Yeah, that's me," that is ego. Ego is your self-image of who you are.
Ego is a complex construct in your mind. It's sitting both at the conscious and the deep subconscious level.
Ego is that "I" that you think you are. It's the thoughts and emotions that you are identified with. It's the beliefs that you think are rock solid and completely true. It's what you think reality is like.
That whole construct is a big and deep iceberg. It's like gigantic iceberg and only the tip of it, like 10 percent, is sticking out of the water. The other 90 percent is all submerged and you don't know what it is. It's just operating. It's just working.
The ego is you. The ego has a couple of features.
The fundamental thing that the ego does is separates itself from everything else that's out in the world. If you're coming from the ego -- and this applies to 99.999% percent of people, including myself -- you say, "This is me," and you look at everything else as not you.
That desk is not you. That other person is not you. That other country is not you.
You are distinct. You are just your mind and your body. You're the skin that you have and everything beyond your skin is something else. You have that clear separation.
This is something that you get as a biological entity, as an organism who that needs to survive and depends on survival and reproduction.
We, as a species, and every living organism, has a sense of this. It's the sense of "I"-ness. It's the sense of "This is me." This is what's important and the other stuff is not so important.

  • My ego limited my ability to live in the moment and encouraged me to live in my mind. It made me judge myself and focus on my failures. It made me critical of others, narrow-minded, afraid of what others thought and constantly anxious. My ego pointed the finger at all the problems out there, in an attempt to divert attention away from the problems within myself. This destructive thinking manifested physically as pain, tension, illness and disease in my body. Pealing away just a few layers of the ego has improved my quality of life. I'm more compassionate and understanding of others. I'm more open-minded to new ideas. I'm breaking out of set routines and bad habits. I'm more comfortable with who i am and am slowly starting to love and accept myself for the first time in my life. My mind and body is healing and becoming stronger ever day. I'm more capable and creative. I can be present and enjoy the moment. I see much more beauty and wonder in the world, instead of only pain and suffering. And i sense this is just the tip of the iceberg!

  • Ego is useful - a tool to be used to contribute and do good. The wise person strives to lose their ego. The enlightened person learns to master it. Bear in mind that when we try to kill our ego, we empower it. It gains control by motivating us to minimize it. When we are in control of it, we use it like a tool in our toolbox as we please. We are the builder, the ego is the tool. Some things live off of the energy that we give them - the ego is one of those things. I would have like to see this vid demonize ego less and teach how to master it more.

    • Well, I´d suggest you to be really careful right there. If you allow your confidence/faith to be put in my comment, try your best to visualize it: During the moment you were watching the video, while Leo´s words were being manifested in your "sounding" awareness, something "inside" the Mind intelligible understood the content of what was being said as related to the idea of Ego and, after that, there were a manifestation of a conceptual narrative, followed by an ideological position of the I. A perspective of what is being understood, constructed by some limited quantity of memories and it´s products: beliefs. Well... that´s the Ego. Your true nature is unfortanately trapped in it for now. Like when you dream about being someone else, but you only discovers it was only a dream at the moment you "Awake" up in bed. Enlightenment and Awakening it´s almost identical with the dreaming situation. Except the fact you don´t wake up in someone else´s bed. Trust me, I´m not trying to judge you in anyway. I´m just giving you hints and tips, don´t demonize my comment. Also, you´re misunderstanding ego death, don´t delude yourself, you won´t master like a tool, if you think you are it.

    • 80% of what you just said are things i discovered on shrooms and LSD.. what I find fascinating.... are thoughts that I begin to have and retain when I go on meditative trips are the same thoughts other people are having..... such a beautiful mystery.. .I remember one of my last lsd trips, very audibly this..... "other me" (people that trip would understand) literally within my mind began to...... coach me.... and that word "tool" was used. the ego is alike.... an OS for a MAC or PC.... its a tool used to navigate, discern, analyze, etc Killing the ego is impossible as thats like killing the operating system... we can only become aware of such a thing.. that the REAL us... is.... each other.... and the personality we use to navigate is just the ego... but people.... sometimes cannot separate the tool from "I".. from "self".. we all at some point experience this.. its a trickery of the mind... a sense of duality to know what you are, but understand you arent what you are..... what a beautiful existence this is... how unfathomable such an experience can even be....

Very recently, some happening has caused me to be very depressed, and then all of a sudden, i felt my ego fade away with my tears. Everything you have spoke of has been 100% the case ever since, and i finally understand what it feels like to have your ego slowly go away and discover the true self. i have calmed my stormy waters, and life feels so fluent. i felt love for myself and others i have not felt before. just had to share. you are a very good spiritual teacher

    • Your tone in your comment sounds cynical to my post. Well, I'm pleased to tell you that that moment was written down in my diary as detailed as possible so that I can still remember very clearly how it felt to feel something shift inside of me. That moment has changed my life around, a sort of 'spiritual awakening' for me. I did not want to lose that feeling, but it's inevitable that life will bring its ups and downs. If you are interested, I can go into a little bit more detail about how I was before this pivotal moment, but for now I will just tell you that this fading of ego allowed me to reach personal peace, mental tranquility, adopt a calmer and secure self-image, and happiness from within me, rather than leeching off other people. It has in a strange way made me realize that I am an abundance of love and that I am able to make others feel happy and loved in a society of hate. Recently, I've been at odds with life, but thank you for bringing me back to this post. It's made me feel better reading my own post. :) peace

  • This topic didn't even exist fro me until two years ago when something very extraordinary happened to me and changed the way I look on life. It's not some spiritual story in which after years of meditation on some mountain peak in one starry night the secrets of the universe unveiled before me. Hell no. I was 18 years old and it was my high school graduation. It was the first time I drank more than a sip of whiskey and the first time I went to a night club. I used to be a shy kid and I had one or two people who talked with but lets leave the cheesy stuff behind, there are millions of kids like this and you know the basic profile of an outsider. So during that night I danced and drank booze all night. I got home at 7 in the morning. Needless to say I felt like a walking corpse the next day. I managed to gather energy to get out of the house after the sunset. I decided to go to the shop and get something sweet to feed my fat ass and get some fresh air. The moment I stepped out of the front door I felt veeery strange but it was a good strange. I felt light. I headed to the shop and it felt like I was levitating. And I didn't even think about where I was going it was like someone knew where I had to go and was pulling me by my forehead in the right direction. I knew I was going to the shop yet I didn't think about it once during the whole trip. I know it's hard to comprehend. On the way there I met a few strangers. And I stared deeply in their eyes until they looked away. And I felt "hey, I am the one who has to be ashamed of eye contact. I am the loser. Why do I feel confident when I know I am unworthy and a piece of shit" But in fact I wasn't even remotely uncomfortable. I went to the shop and stood in front of the cashier who was a very cute girl and looked her in the eye. Just like that. My mind was empty - I didn't think about anything. I was just looking at her. She smiled and I smiled.' It was like we were talking through our eyes. She asked me what I wanted and I jerked it out before I could even think about what I wanted to buy. Unlike all the other times I couldn't decide what I want to get even though that was the only thing I was thinking about during the whole trip to the shop. And what I said was exactly what I wanted to get. Like someone was speaking instead of me and he knew me better than I knew myself. We looked each other in the eye a few more times and always she turned away first. I just didn't care. In fact I then realized I had stopped caring about anyone or anything. It was pure not-caring, not like the usual (telling yourself you don't care about someone but in fact you care). The moment I stepped out I had forgotten her. If it was the previous day and I had such experience with that girl I wouldn't have been able to sleep thinking about her. The world was mine. I could control everything and everyone. I liked everything and everyone and everyone liked me. I got home. I played some music in the living room as I usually do. My parents were also there again as usual. I sat on the sofa. And while the music was playing I suddenly realized I was humming and dancing to the beat. First time in my life. I never ever danced before that night in the club (if you can call throwing your hands around and shaking your body a dance). My parents were confused and looked at me laughing. I laughed too. I didn't feel one bit ashamed. I started chatting with them. And we talked like we were friends. There weren't any walls standing between us. That evening was the first time in my life that I felt alive. In fact, later while looking back I realisd it was the first time I ever felt anything. Before that I was just mimicking feelings but didn't actually feel anything. I went to bed and felt asleep on the spot. Just like that. I didn't stare in the ceiling for 3 hours thinking about the past and the future as I did before. On the next morning I woke up and went out with enthusiasm. But I had lost it. Went to the shop avoiding other people's glances. Stuttered when I bought the candy and everything went back to usual. The girl was very excited when I walked in and that's how I knew everything was real and not a dream. But after a minute she lost all interest because I was the same loser that I was before. I had the same experience but not that intense and clear a few more times after that. Only one time it didn't come after me drinking alcohol and it was the most real of them all. I realize that this is a very good foundation of becoming an alcoholic so I drink as rare as possible. Maybe once or twice a month. Not that you care about my personal boundaries or anything but to warn people that even though alcohol might make you feel uplifted it's temporary and in the long term will make you even more miserable. P.S. If you don't love yourself no one else will. And I know this not because I read it on some blog but because I have felt it. All the truth in the world lies in you and you just have to look inside yourself and you will see the universe. TL;DR Everyone has a great person in himself who he suppresses. Even the loneliest and the ugliest kid has a leader and a lover hidden deep inside it. It's up to you to bring this person out. Everything you need lies in you and not outside of you.

    • +Georgi Georgiev Oh I was so excited writing this I forgot to connect it to the topic of the video :D. I believe that what happened there with me was just my ego completely disappearing. I didn't think of what others think of me. I didn't expect anything from anyone. I felt like I don't owe anything to anyone nomore. I just stopped hanging out with some people I knew for years just like that and it felt right. But all of this is valid for the period I feel the strange feeling. After I lose it I go back to these people and I agains tart to feel like I owe somebody and somebody owes me. Thinking about this I feel like God is just giving me a free trail of the life I can have if I start working on myself. Because when you get something without any work it is taken away from you just as effortlessly. And when you think that life is unfair to you think it the other way around. Are you being fair with life. With you being your ego and life being your soul.

      @saladinthedark7459@saladinthedark74598 жыл бұрын
    • +Georgi Georgiev when you say you lost it, what in fact happened was you covered it. You covered it by asking a question or grasping at a reference point in an attempt to find a way to hold on to it. The thing that asks what now or how to I own this or how can I remember this so that I can be here whenever I choose is the thing that's in the way if being it. It's called the mind made self and it's everything you said it was, insecure, full of doubt, afraid and that's because it's an illusion and no illusion can ever know something real.

I don't start it with "dear diary" I start my entry with "higher being within," what I noticed while watching your video is my ego was not becoming gradually more numb with my awareness and improvement on it, but rather my ego was evolving to where it is now calling upon my "higher being within" for answers and (due to subconscious writing exercises) my higher being within answers all the questions I have. • I have been struggling in school, I have been struggling with making the decisions that would make me happy... I knew about ego but I haven't realized how much it was holding me back until recently. Now that I'm preparing for my exams, it's not even about achieving anything, it's about practicing humbling myself. Sitting with the empty heart that comes with a shattered ego of not knowing something (yet). I realize this is something I might benefit from doing with my dysfunctional relationships too, using them for practice. I'm not sure I'm ready for that yet though. Maybe I will just practice not reacting first. Ego isn't inherently bad, but being mindful and noticing when it's holding you back in the here and know is worth doing. It gets better. It gets less painful. I hope one day I will be strong enough to do this with people too.

When you think you're making progress and you're not judging, not identifying with thought patterns etc, that's your ego feeling thretened and telling you not to keep working on yourself. It really is like a really hard to kill parasite living inside your brain. But like you're saying - even that is ok! Everything just is.

But, living more in the present or being aware of just one point on your body, for example a belly, how it has a life of its own and you are awaee of it, suddenly you will see that ego always works. But, at this moment you dont live in your head anymore. You are aware of tgoughts, not the thoughts. Its like thoughts are volumed down.

I see myself making mistakes, taking a step back, I see it for the process that it is and accept it etc. Instead of judging myself. Maybe not judging ourselves, especially in a negative light, is the hardest part.

  • after months of therapy, i'm finally able to take a peek at my own ego, manifesting himslef in certain situations. Your believes are molded by your perception, after years and years of trusting them without even hesitate, to challenge the idea that the world as you know it isn't real, or at least look at it from another perspective, i'ts hard and it's scary. This change wouldn't have happened if i didn't touch bottom in the first place, so if anybody is feeling bad about himself, i would suggest exploring your ego. A good start would be trying to identify all your preconcepts about people, and trying to notice your reactions or thoughts about people around you in your daily routine. Chat with someone about it, that hint it's really important. it doesn't have to be a psychologist, if you don't have friends, defy your preconcepts about you and ask youself why. Give it time, being conscious of your ego isn't a easy task.

  • Ego death is not something to aim for in this modern world, its a massive misconception everyone has that its a positive thing. The mere awareness of how your ego develops is enough to be more aware in throughout its development. Over the years you realise how certain events affect how you relate to life, knowinthis, and stepping outside this peocess to be aware of what is happeningis the real aim. Develop strong positive morals your ego identifies with and you will do far more good in this world than someone who aims for death or diminishment of the ego.

Not being needy, greedy, selfish and afraid is what I believe the end of modern ego. but you cant end the ego because it is what we came for to live in this experience.

    • +Joshua Vallejos . the truth is that ego death is as real as the illusion that dies when it's seen thorough. if you were to try to kill ego it would only be ego trying to end itself while under the impression that it's not the ego. the secret it to drop all attachment to thought and ego Will no longer be the obsession it's made into.

    • stephen finch This. you don't have to 'kill' your ego in order to not be controlled by it. Somehow everyone thinks that ego's are demonic things that lead us away from our true self. It's a load of hogwash.

    • Can you kill a thought? Can you ignore a thought? Ego is created by believing one thought linked to another linked to another. It is referred to as ego death because the realization that it is only that is also the realization that what you took yourself to be is actually not real and you are left with emptiness and in that sense it is death and can be quite confusing. it's best to not be concerned with killing it off. rather find out how much of your life is based on belief and what you know is true (and truth is self verifying) and that alone should put things into perspective.

    • I disagree the ego is just a game we have it for a reason, it is not our true self, when the light of consciousness shines throughout it the ego becomes insecure and exposed and it cannot survive. Ultimately we are not our ego, our ego is a tiny spec of the vast awareness and consciousness that is out there. Read Power of Now by Eckart Tolle. - The evolution of consciousness is the next step for mankind,

  • It is popular to believe in these theories. All of evolution and the struggle of life forms has been to separate the organism and make it a separate individual that is now called the ego. While a car may be a collection of molecules which are a collection of atoms which are a collection of sub atomic particles which are waveforms of energy, in the end... it's still a frikin car. It is all of the things that make it up and it is also more than the sum of its parts. The cars essence is in the pattern of the collective and not the collective itself. To lose your "ego" is to lose yourself. We are what we desire to be as long as we take those desires and turn them into reality. I see myself as a good man. In that image I hold as the good man I desire to be, I have ideals. If I fail to live up to those ideals I have 3 choices. 1- I can realize my failure and strive to do better at living up to my ideals 2- I can alter my ideals to make my perception of what being a "good man" is. 3- I can alter my goals of being a good man and settle for less than my true hearts desire. 2 and 3 are cop outs and people will go to elaborate lengths to justify choosing options 2 and 3... like this concept of the ego being a bad thing that needs to eliminated in one way or another.

    • The1stDukeDroklar I think I get what you’re saying. Makes sense, but the only question I have about that is this: if I’m not mistaking, you say that changing your ideals about what you think you are is a cop out, but what if a person actually objectively has bad ideals that they need to re-evaluate? Do bad ideals even exist in your opinion?

  • I was looking at your videos & my immediate thoughts were that I didn't want to watch certain ones. After a little thought, I realized it was just my ego trying to keep me from watching more videos because it does not want me to continue to grow. It is scared of change, but I already feel myself relieved from my personal hell. Learning to let go of the ego in myself is the best thing to happen to me.

  • I have been battling with 2 question lately and it's nice to see people here that are so interested in the subject. 1. How can you pursue or even wish something if you have no (zero) ego? 2. How can you romantically love a significant other if you are one with everything and basically love and feel at peace with everything that's going on? Please :)

If I'm really at peace and one with the world how am I not one with my significant other? Stop evaluating self and start being yourself
