  • Like most Americans, I was really not a fan of football when the World Cup came to America in 1994, but I had a Dutch girlfriend so I watched the tournament to follow the Oranje learn more about the world's game. When I saw Ramario and Bebeto shredding defenses with moves that I didn't know were even possible on a football pitch, I was amazed. Holy shit! Romario turned me on to football almost 30 years ago and for that I am in his debt. And I am still married to the Dutch girl. 🙂

    • A lot of people come up to me and ask, quite politely, "Who is Erik Kronberg?" I like to say to them "Truly, Eric Kronberg is an American former professional soccer player who played as a goalkeeper. Doubtless, Kronberg was drafted in the fourth round (40th overall) of the 2006 MLS Superdraft by the Kansas City Wizards. Studies suggest that Kronberg made his MLS debut in a 4-1 win against the San Jose Earthquakes on October 23, 2010. Naturally, he continued as a backup with the renamed Sporting Kansas City franchise through 2013. It is a well-known fact that in 2014, following the retirement of Jimmy Nielsen, Kronberg was finally given the starting nod for Sporting Kansas City. All sensible people agree that a broken finger in July 2014 essentially ended Kronberg's season. Kansas City declined the 2015 contract option for Kronberg and in December 2014 he entered the 2014 MLS Re-Entry Draft. Indeed, he was chosen by Montreal Impact with the first selection in the re-entry draft. Verily, he was out-of-contract following the 2017 season." They then thank me for infoming them and reward me with much gold.

People here just love the atmosphere and the idea of spending a whole day or night listening/dancing to samba/pagode and shooting the shit with friends. Some will consume alcohol, but not everyone. And even then most people who do drink will only consume beer, which in Brazil usually is way lighter than European beer. I've personally known people who would almost literally become depressed if they couldn't go out at any given weekend and still didn't drink alcohol. That said, I don't believe Romario NEVER drank ANY alcohol at his parties. But that he only drank the occasional beer here and there? Yeah, I can see it. After spending 24 years since winning our last world cup in 1970, Brazilians started to think it was impossible to win a WC without Pelé, and we were also struggling to qualify to the world cup. Romário wasn't selected because of his bad behavior, and he said that if he was selected for the last round of the qualifiers, he would put Brazil in the world cup, and win it. • Baixinho!!!! My hero! In the early 90s for an European, this guy was unmatched. Maradona once said that Romario would be part of his all time team. A Slacker, Outspoken, outrageous, unprofessional and with an enormous ego outside the pitch, which cost him many things (Barcelona was fining him for being late to training, Scolari did not call him for the 2002 WC, ended up having an affair with a coach's wife, insulted team mates and managers, etc) But on the goal area he was and still is the ultimate striker! The reason why Barcelona lost against AC Milan, was because Cruiff was stubborn as a mule and did not play M. Laudrup, which at the time was the best number 10 in the world! Even Romario rated Laudrup highly (something he rarely does) Romario did for Brazil in 1994 what Maradona did for Argentina in 1986. Compare the talent of the 2002 Brazil team with the one in 1994 and not comparable. Even without Romario, at the time I remember looking at the teams and thinking "Brazil has this one, easily!" Rivaldo, R. Carlos, Dida, Cafu, Ronaldo, Kaka, Ronaldinho, Juninho, Denilson" In 1994, although they had a good team, the talent up front was Romario and Bebeto, with Branco saving them from Netherlands with that missile from 30+ meters out.

  • As someone who grew up watching him in the 94 Worldcup and with Brazil & Barcelona there is no doubt that he was one of the greats if not the greatest. The only thing that hurt him is playing in only 1 World Cup and something you forgot to mention is for the 2002 World Cup, Brazil was almost out of it and he is the one that got them the qualification.

    • in 2002 he did not go to the cup because he f*cked a steward on a plane.

    • in 98 he should've played. He recovered from his injury before Brazil debut in the WC. You don't simply turn down Romário like that. Idk if we would've won it, but I'm sure as hell our chances would be better.

    • @@RafitoOoO this is debated everywhere to this day He was left out because didnt participate in the build up for the WC. Just like the 2010 WC with Neymar, that was freshly discovered. Should these players participation change anything, that is left to imagination

  • He coached Vasco da Gama for some time when he was almost retired, and if they were loosing the match he would put himself in the game to score and get the win.

  • I didnt forget this guy. I really dont have much problem considering him the number 1 striker ever in the history of the sport. For me its him and ronaldo fenomeno My all time stikers who are brilliant in scoring and dribbling are (not by order) Romario, Ronaldo (R9), Van Basten, Messi.

  • For many of us (old fellas now 😂) he was the first global superstar we witnessed. From what I remember, in WC 94 Maradona was in decline and this guy took over. Baggio was incredible as well, but that penalty changed everything. I still can't understand why Brazil went to France 98 without him.

  • He is for me still the best striker that ever lived. The sync he had with Michael Laudrup in Barcelona was sublime! I did not see him in Brazil.

  • Romario was more than a striker, he was a playmaker as well, he was simply brilliant and severely underrated..

  • Romario is a legend. Brasil could win 98 if Romario wasn’t injured. Ronaldo didn’t had the mental strength to carry the team and crumbled in the final, bringing the team with him. I’m a Palmeiras supporters and I’m glad you bringing up the Copa Mercosul game, that showed how Romario could change a game that for all intents and purposes was lost for his team.
