2024 BMW X5 Review | BMW's X5 Is Still King Of The Hill, Even If You Don't X5M...

BMW's X5 isn't exactly a spring chicken, but BMW has done an excellent job of keeping their mid-sized SUV up to date with constant changes, new engines, improved plug in hybrids and more options, gadgets, and gizmos available than most of the competition put together. To demo what the X5 has to offer, BMW sent me a fire-breathing X5M for the week, and, well, MMMMM.

  • We have a town home-sized garage and ironically because our X5 has the split tailgate it's one of the few SUVs that allows us to open the tailgate while the garage is down. Plus the split tailgate is just more practical

EV companies get away with it because high tech people who want electric also want everything on tough pad. They are tech people and not real drivers. They promote tech as it’s their industry. Real car enthusiasts want manual controls with great ergonomics and muscle memory knowing where they are without looking. It’s all about the driving experience with ease. Two different types of drivers.

Not a fan of run flat tires. Will likely replace with non-RFT and put a spare in. MPG is incredible on the highway getting 31-33mpg at 75mph. Drive Assist Pro is phenomenal. Coming from an RDX this is a really nice upgrade. Comfortable and very quiet. I wanted a BMW ICE before they go all EV.

    • Yes; it's easy to see how these luxury cars get totaled out so fast. I have a similar story: I bought a new 2016 3 Series and took it in to get a clear bra installed. Well, the installer cut the clearbra on the headlights, and damaged the headlight housings. The LED headlight housings were $2K EACH -- for just the housings. And there's another $1-2K of modules attached to each housing as well, which of course were not damaged in this case, since there was no impact. But the body shop estimate was $5K with labor, just to replace two headlight housings - which the installer's insurance payed out to me. Imagine how high the bill would be if all the modules got smashed up in an accident, with other front end components.

  • I hate so much that they've moved nearly everything to the screen like some other idiotic car companies. Buttons will last 100 times longer than any screen ever will. And it's a shame, because the redesign isn't bad by any stretch, although I think it peaked with the last iteration, but the lack of longevity and safe usability keeps me away, and will keep many away from this newest model. And that's a shame, especially with the improvements to the PHEV. Great and thorough review as always, though.

Mercedes needs to step it up with the GLE and bring back the High-End Burmester Audio System, implement Digital Key and unlock the FULL function of the Multi-Beam LED headlights.... and upgrade those basic brakes on the AMG GLE 53.

    • Honestly a Model X makes so much more sense than both of these SUVs. Even the base model would probably match a X5M in the 1/4 mile and trap speed. Teslas easily have some of the best audio system (even though they get a license to brand their system). Also has some great headlights and even better cornering lights because it has 3 stages to them. I believe the brakes are decent but I don't remember what upgrade they did recently after the Plaid brakes fiasco.

But most importantly, BMW isn't really about status, IMO. I mean, yes, it is a luxury car - of course. Some people do buy them for status. BUT I buy them for what they can do. They outperform and outhandle ordinary vehicles. It's not like a 3 Series is a tarted up Mazda 3, Elantra, or Civic, or something - a basic 3 Series is leaps and bounds more capable with way higher limits, than a normal compact car. If you've never owned one you wouldn't understand.
