  • In regards to the Hyperscreen UI layout, I've seen similar issues before....in late 90s, early 2000s. Cars started getting a lot of new functions you could control, and Ergonomics was a real issue. Then the industry seemed to follow certain standards that made sense, and get similar layouts where it counted, so you could go from car to car and quickly figure out most of the essential functions very quickly. With touchscreen controls, we are back in the Wild West, and it may take a while before auto makers figure out common sense controls that will become similar between all makes. It sucks, but give it 5-10 years. I'm still a fan of analog controls for some things that don't require any eye contact

  • The brake pedal reminds me of old 1970’s cruise control. You’d set it and it’d pull the gas pedal away from your foot. It was very disconcerting at first, but it only happened once when you set it. I can’t imagine chasing the brake pedal. That’s a recall and a class action waiting to happen.

    @BangerFleet@BangerFleet Жыл бұрын
    • Funny enough, as much as I hate the moronic idea behind it, I didn't find the break pedal to be much of an issue in real-world driving. It's still such an unexplainably idiotic thing to do though. Usually some of these weird decisions from legacy car makers are driven by the desire to not alienate their aging customer base, and make EVs more "similar" to ICE cars. In this case though, it's just a baffling choice, as no ICE car has that stupid behaviour.

  • 12:52 Even when in radar cruise and slowing down, a 2022 Acura RDX (yes, i know it’s a gas car, the one in the video is electric) fixed this problem. It has a drive by wire system, so your brakes and accelerator are electronically controlled, so the brake pedal never moves when the car brakes on its own.

Moving the pedal hinders this reflex and makes the car more dangerous to drive. That is why 2 people have called it a "safety hazard" and I agree. No other car with cruise control or regen braking moves the brake or accel pedal when it speeds up or slows down, and maybe there's a reason for that?

  • I don't own an EV yet, but I recently rented an VW ID.4 for a long road trip. I don't think the brake pedal moved, but it definitely had this intuitive/smart regen braking, and I actually loved it. If there was a long downhill section I didn't have to worry about changing the amount of regen, or adjusting with the brake, to keep a perfect distance to the car in front. I just chose the distance I wanted, and it kept that for me by increasing or decreasing the amount of regen. But it didn't just pay attention to cars, also did it for sharp bends and it kept track of the speed limit. So if I was regening down a hill at lets say 80km/t, but then the speed limit changed to 50km/h, I didn't have to do a thing, it just applied more regen and continued at 50km/h. As long as you have the ability to switch such smart assists on/off as you please, or override it when needed, I think they are awesome.

There's gotta be some compromise between the pedal travel, the amount of force/torque it takes to push the pedal down, and the amount of braking action such that one of these doesn't match the way you'd expect it to be with exclusively friction brakes.

It means that the system can disengage when your foot touches the pedal and for braking and acceleration, it means that when you let off that pedal, the same relative change in action of that pedal happens that would normally happen. If the brake pedal was not depressed for example, then how would you be able to "release" it to stop braking?

EQS SUV has much better brakes. While I test drove it, I did not notice the brake pedal moving at all, which is strange because one of my main focus during the test drive was brakes. To me it means that I will possibly not be bothered by it much. The software piece I agree is a little too touch heavy, and I hope Mercedes cleans it up. The driving experience of the car though is awesome, and the technology and comfort are better than any other electric vehicle I have tested, and that's saying something because I do agonizing research over the car I plan to buy. For me, this seemed to fit like a glove. The range numbers worry me a little though. Mercedes claims 340 miles, which was a big selling point for me, and you memtioned 260-280. That way, how quickly the car slows down with say a half way pushed pedal is consistent with different levels of regeneration. It does make sense in a way. I dont think I would like it either though. The pedal only moves if the brakes are being used, at least if it's hydraulic. One would expect the necessary brake pressure to change if you changed the regen level. Pretty sure Mercedes is just scamming people. This car should be sold for no more than $80k.

    • In my manual transmission car, i have stronger engine braking at high engine speed (similar to regen), if I downshift and the engine is at 6000 RPM, it will have stronger engine braking than at 3000 RPM. If the brake pedal wiggled around based on the strength of engine braking, that would be extremely dangerous. I'm like 95% sure the Mercedes is not regen braking. There is only one way the brake pedal moves, and that's by activating the brakes. I'm sure we will eventually hear the brakes squealing on older cars when they let off, expecting regen.

  • I rented a lower trim version of the EQS SUV from Hertz in Fort Lauderdale. I chose it over Tesla Model 3 because it had a higher roofline and more upright seating position. Those two features were the only things that I liked about it. I didn't understand the lack of a frunk (and it took forever to figure out how to manually open the rear tailgate). The cabin noise was greater than in my 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Pro. The seats were less comfortable than my EV work truck. It did not handle or accelerate as well as the Lightning (that is totally bananas). The braking - which Marques touched on - drove me nuts; I constantly was using the paddles to make sense of it. And despite the fact that I am a Top 3% Tech Guy, I found the dash UI indecipherable. Bottom line: I would NEVER trade my Lightning, in basic work truck trim, for this "luxury" Mercedes SUV.

  • 4:08 To open the trunk, just shortly hold your foot under the car. Then the trunk opens by itself. Without an app, without pressing the key, without a voice command. Pretty smart when you approach the car with full bags and can open the trunk that way.

  • The "don't forget your charger screen" is on 2020 Hyundai palisade vehicles. of course the ones with the wireless charger built in, also once the car senses bad driving from operator , gives you a coffee symbol and tells you to "consider taking a break" , reminds of you ice conditions , etc... I think hyundai has done a great job with vehicles.

  • I’ve been greatly intrigued by the EQS SUV. Owner of a 2018 Model X 100D. Love the vehicle. However when sitting in wife’s Mercedes GLS, noise isolation and sound system are light years ahead. Considering the EQS as a replacement for the GLS in 1-2 years. I’m annoyed about not having a frunk. I get Mercedes is about luxury, but it’s a design choice/limitation that a frunk is being used I believe for the HVAC and other systems. We have a Rivian R1S in order expected in 2024 so we shall see who wins out.

    • 100 years of coach craft can’t be beat in a decade. I am with you. Love the Tesla but if you already have one then the MB luxury is second to none. Everyone KZheadrs video gets quite after they get in the car. Also Macan EV is coming, just saying. As much as I love the Rivian I am concerned whether they can survive this recession. They are burning money and no high volume model. Do have cash on balance sheet tho. On the frunk, their battery / fluid packaging does not allow enough room to from a useful enough frunk. BMW / MB have similar suppliers I believe. Same design.

    • @@quboguo2360 yep - I used to run a 2016 X5. Don’t get me wrong, Model X acceleration is awesome but build quality X5 was ahead of Model X for interior. Agree on Rivian, Im glad we have delivery in 2024 since bugs can be worked out or even see how they do. I was one of the fortunate orders they got to stick with the lower price. Oh the other thing to add, Tesla customer service and the sales experience is terrible. Again, don’t get me wrong, I have a Cybertruck ordered too lol. But don’t even compare the service experience of Germans vs Tesla 😂

  • Nice vid, thanks. I am sure someone might have mentioned it, but just in case: My Kona EV also realizes that when the driver is leaving the car and his/her smart phone ist still on the charging pad - and then chimes and gives a text message. Again: Marques should test-drive the Kona - for an early EV (Hyundae just annouced its 3rd version if you count the facelift from last year) and as a car which was designed for different drive-trains, it does a lot of things right :) Also, the absence of the pedal driving is a no-no - we also drive a Smart EV (one from the time when Smart was a Mercedes brand) and it also got that non-optional adaptive regenerative braking. Don‘t like it, too. :)
