The Peugeot 3008 is one of our favourite SUVs, as a petrol or diesel - but is the expensive hybrid option worthwhile? Priced at $79,990 before on-road costs, the 3008 GT Sport PHEV is much more expensive than a RAV4 Hybrid, but it is cheaper than the Lexus NX 450h+. So, does this PHEV make sense?
In today’s episode of Chasing Cars, journalist John Law conducts an independent test of the 2022 Peugeot 3008 hybrid.

  • I drove the 3008 when it was released and I was impressed. I remember the poor performance of the RAV4 in the swerve test recently and the Peugeot would kill it. Peugeots have always had great handling and even though they are a small player in Australia, they are one of the best sellers in Europe. Australians should raise their horizons! Price of this model is quite daunting though and will probably only appeal to Peugeotphiles.

  • A very underrated brand in my opinion..I recently hired a 3008 Allure for 800 ks. I found it fantastic to drive and with the latest Peugeot innovation, I felt completely at home. I think the 3008 Phev would be a perfect combination ....

  • I live in Greece, and here the road landscape is a little weird, on one hand half the country lives in Athens and it is kinda crowded with short narrow roads, and on the other hand most of the country side is mountains with very twisty roads. So a car that can handle very well in the corners, is relatively short for the cargo/passenger space it offers, is tall, and has a small turning circle, is really what most of us need. Add to that great performance and great fuel economy, especially in the city, and we have a winner. I agree that it is expensive (though with the price of fuel here and the taxes eventually you are going to recoup that cost difference....), but really i would buy this over any german/korean/japanese rival in a heartbeat. It is a great package.

    • Not really. The NX450h has worse acceleration and top speed, far worse turning circle, and is much bigger and heavier than this, plus its sunroof is smaller and not panoramic if that interests you. Not to mention that with the battery empty, the NX450h has far less power since its petrol engine is only 185 ps at 6000rpm, no turbo. So less efficient and less powerful. Lots of drawbacks actually.

    @nizm0man@nizm0man2 жыл бұрын
  • Nice review thanks John. A couple of questions: You mentioned the performance with all 3 motors working - on a PHEV, when the tiny battery runs out of power, I assume only the ICE engine is working, and it's just lugging that 400kg of additional dead weight around, is that right? If so that punchy acceleration is only available for the first 50km of your drive from Sydney to Melbourne, and thereafter you have reduced performance, reduced fuel economy and reduced capability with no spare tyre... So this car would be best for people who commute about an hour a day? Cheers

    @MeasureOnce@MeasureOnce2 жыл бұрын
    • Not quite. Because to get that level of acceleration and power it’s using all engines together at the same time. The 50km is pure electric only driving which wouldn’t use the petrol engine so it wouldn’t be as quick. When the car works as a hybrid with both electric and petrol together it goes much much further. It’s actually smarter to drive a plug in hybrid as a hybrid and not just in ev mode because it will go further.

  • Thanks for another great review, John. The 3008 is an attractive car inside and out and it seems to drive really nicely. For me, it’s too expensive and I’d find the recharging requirement annoying. I like the car but wouldn’t buy one at that price.

    • @@chasingcars You are correct. I just purchased a 2022 3008GT (ex Demo). Mine was fully optioned except it had 18" wheels not the 19" (a bit strange!). The new car price was about S65-67,000. I got mine for $42,000 cash no trade. I specifically looked for the 2.0L diesel because it is a proven engine over time (It's actually about 15 years old - and has only had minor modifications). It has plenty of power. I just don't think Australia is set up for the electric revolution, although that may come in time. BTW a great review - very balanced. My only complaint (and you can now tell my age) is that there is no CD player. Nothing beats a good six stacker. I know I'm a dinosaur.

  • I’ve never understood why you should need two power sources to fuel one car. It’s complexity, weight and too much of a price hike for little in the way of benefits. A modern diesel, or mild hybrid diesel makes far more sense. A survey conducted in the UK of 2000 plug-in hybrid vehicle drivers found nearly 90% of them just run the cars on their petrol engines alone, never recharging the batteries, most likely because they only have the car for tax benefits and can’t be bothered to recharge the car as well as putting fuel in it.

    @Olliebobalong@Olliebobalong2 жыл бұрын
    • Owners using PHEV vehicles incorrectly, doesn't mean they are not worth it. If you are exploiting its benefits properly, it can actually be vastly better than any other type of car. Depends on where you live, where you need to go, if you can charge at home and/or your destinations. Diesels can be expensive to buy and service/repair relative to petrol, and they only make sense if you travel long distances (to clean them) often because otherwise they often need expensive repairs due to bacteria in the tank and filters. And even the best diesel is not more economical than a PHEV that is charged frequently. Plus a PHEV can also have great performance, like this 3008 with its 5.9 0-62mph time....

      @user-bs1wx1tb7e@user-bs1wx1tb7e Жыл бұрын
    • @@user-bs1wx1tb7e Diesel engines are far cheaper to maintain than petrol engines over the long term. Just normal servicing. The 2.0L diesel is the best engine ever put into a Peugeot. Absolutely reliable. My 2012 308 diesel (165,000kms) was just run in - never had a problem. And that's why I purchased a 3008GT with the diesel engine - it is proven over time. Now, I only travel 15,000 per year (less during COVID) - still no trouble with the motor. Every so often you just rev it out in manual mode through 1st, 2nd, 3rd, gear. and service it correctly with European specialist mechanic.

They think they have brand recognition/respect =/> Audi/VW and refuse to acknowledge their bad reputation as a French car company. Peugeot interiors are very plastic at the base models like all brands including VW. Outdated tech I don't know what you're on about there's a bunch of tech from VW group you can't get in a Peugeot. While Peugeot is aiming to be a semi-premium brand in Australia you can't demand that yet from consumers by pricing your cars so high with the limited reputation it has.
