I can't believe this actually just happened

What the hell just happened?! It’s been an unbelievable NHL season. One for the history books, so it was only fitting that we’d get an unbelievable finale heading into the playoffs. Coming into tonights matchup against the Washington Capitals, the Philadelphia Flyers had just a 6% of making it. But they had a chance. As for the capitals, they just needed a win and they were in. Meanwhile though, after that incredible comeback last night at home, over in Montreal the Detroit Red Wings now just needed a win in any fashion so long as the Capitals lost to the Flyers. Needless to say, it was a wild finish! The Flyers scored first but had it called back after an early whistle blew it for them. Further, the Flyers had to get a regulation win. So should they be tied in the 3rd period, they may actually pull their goalie in regulation because an OT win did them no good. And yeah, of course that would indeed happen.
Even crazier though, in Montreal the Canadiens were up by a goal with just 7 seconds to go. Pulling their goalie, it led to the Red Wings eliminating the Flyers by pushing OT while almost simultaneously Tortorella was pulling his goalie not knowing they were already eliminated. Ironically, the wound up eliminating each other! I cover it all and more in todays NHL hockey video!

So there were only 22 teams in the league in and all four rounds of the playoffs were not seven games. • Agreed. Similar to the NBA with their play in games. NHL needs to make it make sense. This doesn't and a part of me thinks they wanted Ovi in one more time no matter what. Ovi going to MSG round one makes them way more money than Detroit going there. The stupid call on the flyers first goal is dumb too. Sports gambling has ruined sports in many ways. No consistency with any sports officiating anymore other than that they are consistently suspect. Getting to the playoffs on an empty netter is a disgrace to the game.

  • This scenario would have been so much better - and so on-brand for Torts - if Torts pulled the goalie during a stoppage in play, and then received intel from his staff that the Wings had tied their game with 3 seconds remaining (thus eliminating the Flyers), BUT he then immediately puts the goalie back in, creating additional drama! In that situation, both the Wings (tied at 4-4) and the Caps (tied at 1-1) each still need another (non-empty net) goal to secure a playoff berth.

  • Even the players had no idea where the puck was. I think in the end it was a good call by the ref and the sit room. I think what saved them the most was how good the goalie acted as if he had the puck, and then it was getting tense around the net, so the play was whistled. It was unfortunate for Detroit, but I think it played out correctly.

    • I could also add their electric start. Remember Detroit's power play when the season started? They looked like the damn Oilers out there. I actually thought they might be in the conversation for a division title up til say Thanksgiving. Yeah I can't cry for them too hard now that they got bumped at the 11th hour.

This guy's home country started a war, is too much of a pussy to go to his home country to fight, and yet he comes to America and expects the world to owe him. Detroit won more games than Washington. This is the work of Garry Bettman'. Sutherland and the rest of the Refs are in bed with him to protect their own jobs. Thank's BET 365 for too deciding the games.

  • The technicalities in all sports make them great but also make them terrible at the same time. As a wing fan this is PARTICULARLY infuriating but I get it. For any Wings fans out there that want to belly ache about Torts pulling their goalie in a tie game have to realize he's not scrolling his timeline to check-in on how the Wings are doing. He had a plan and it was so bang bang I can't possibly fault him. And why is he so concerned if the Wings make the playoffs in the first place? Oh we're out, let me do some other organization a solid? Cmon. The REAL reason why the Wings are not in the playoffs right now is because of the last month, Larkin went out and started the losing streak, you can't just drop 2 games to the Coyotes and then turn around and lose to the Pens and Caps too and turn around again to complain about how Torts is the bad guy. Anyone with any common sense knows this. It was great having games that actually matter as a Wings fan though and the future is looking bright. We're still on the outside looking in but the expectation most certainly has to be at minimum playoffs next year. A lot of Wings fans even before tonight were saying Yzerman's on the hot seat, which is totally ridiculous when you consider what he inherited both on the roster, in grand rapids and some contracts still on the books for players who don't even play. Every year he has improved the win total and he literally said in the media that it would be about 5 years til you can start thinking playoffs, we'll...it came down to the last game, so his prediction rang true. I think fans are just tired of losing and playing games that don't matter and that's fine, but this is a process, just like Baseball. You draft a guy and it takes years to develop. The Larkin interview post game was devastating to watch, I actually got choked up. He wants it so bad and he knows they blew it and he's furious about it. But that's good, build off of that!

    • It’s 2024. Nobody is saying Torts should personally be scrolling through his phone. Don’t they have assistants or people who could let him know in real time? I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect coaches to make decisions in real time based on accurate information. That’s sort of the job.

    • I expect 5-6 close low scoring games if the Rangers win game 1 I don't think it'll go past 5 games but if the Caps manage to pull off the 1st game it will be a close series. The Caps are no fun to play they will collapse in front of their net and force the Rangers to play methodically which is not really their strength. I actually think the Rangers have a shot this year and I didn't feel that way last year.

    • They had to have the 2 points, keep Washington from getting any and hope for a Detroit loss for them to have any chance at all. They did what they had to do for themselves. That said......the caps couldn't skate after playing Boston 21 hrs earlier and it looked like Philly could have scored 5 on 5 at any moment. OVI looked like his skates were handcuffed together, he couldn't move hardly at all last half of the 3rd. All the stoppage confusion for the face off hand pass was definitely a flow disruption/ distraction too.
