What does hitting a baseball with a baseball bat, and knowing when to wake up to make it to your 8:00 am class have in common? Well, they are both tasks that require perception of time. Both motor and perceptive timing have been found to use the same brain pathways. This means that it is the same area firing when you are trying to time a run to catch a football as figuring out how long it will take to write an essay. Interestingly, research has shown that motor timing (usually tested by having someone maintain a tapping rhythm) is harder for people with ADHD and dyslexia. However, we know from the sheer number of athletes and musicians that come to Untapped with ADHD that this is a trait that is successfully overcome. So all the more reason to use timing in our movement sessions, because as you train the motor timing system you are developing the theoretical timing system as well.
