FYI: Until today, July 5, 2012, the video here other than the sparring has never been seen before by anyone but myself and video editor John Murphy. Pay special attention to Sugar Ray Leonard and future WBC champion Gerald McCellan at ringside taking in the action together...before the sparring you can see Roger Leonard and future cruiserweight contender David Sewell in the gym...
I always tell people, after sparring so much with RJ, I never worried too much about boxing with anyone else...
You taught him well Scully 👍 Was that before or after he went to the Olympics & won the Val Barker trophy that year ?

@@IceJohnScully Good lad Scully, you done a great job getting him ready. I was 14 watching that Olympics in Ireland. Roy blew my mind the way he handled Franeck from Czechoslovakia, it was an absolute boxing lesson vs a European Champ & then Richie Woodhall the British Champ. Before that I had never seen anyone use a lead hook like a jab & the way he stepped it up 2 gears when Woodhall stepped it up a gear all but killed my ambitions of ever being good enough to compete at that level & my coach had boxed at the Olympics. Ive no doubt it was the sparring he got with pros & mingling with the likes of Ray Leonard that brought him to that level for the games. You were all robbed in that final, not just Roy.

With someone like Roy Jones you gotta overwhelm him with punch volume and not get caught with slick counters, very difficult -- shesssh!
John scully had a great high guard. One of my favorite high guarded fighters next to winky wright.

Great video! Roy should have continued in his pro career to develop his infighting, as you've done here. In some later bouts at light heavy he seemed to struggle a bit against brawlers and pressure fighters who got past his jab and forced him into the ropes. While Roy beat David Telesco fairly easily, Telesco's pressure style made it ugly. And, later, Glen Johnson took advantage of Roy's discomfort with pressure tactics.
Roy never had a problem with guys pressing him. Long south paw counter punchers posed a problem like Griffin and Eric Harding.. but Roy figured them out. But guys pressing Roy in his prime - which was about 15 years straight - that would be suicide.
Roy never used his jab in fights. His leaping left hook was his jab. Only fight I've ever saw him use a consistent jab, was against Vinny Pazienza
Very nice. I see you went 12 with Nunn for the title. No surprise after seeing you here. I was a boxing junkie in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Lost track but I recall how good the 3 middles were.

Bayonne. Chuck Wepner, Nino Gonzalez. Buffano’s Gym in Jersey City. Liston trained there for some fights. Buddy McGirt trained fighters there. My HS classmate was a 2nd middle trained by Buddy. Gatti and Antifermo lived in Bayonne too. Later in the ‘90s.
I see from the below your are a boxing historian. My next-door neighbor was Tommy Roman, who beat Fritzie Zivic. Tommy and his bro Carmen trained Johnny DiGilio whose career was put on the decline by a loss to Cisco Andrade. Johnny won the NY GG as a welter. How could I leave out Ernie Durando. A terrific middle. His son married my best friend’s sister.

@@IceJohnScullyI got a question, when sparring Roy Jones just how fast were his hands really. Like I know on camera they seemed really fast but I suspect in real life they must be much faster than on camera, like how would you describe his speed. Like you just blink and you get hit? I’ve boxed before and I know how fast a punch is in person compared to on camera, when I see myself boxing I think like damn my punches are slow and my opponent throws slow punches when seen on camera even though in actuality punches look much faster than on camera. So that begs the question is since Roy Jones so fast on camera, how would you describe his speed in person? Is it like watching a rock being thrown at you at 45 MPH, like an invisible ball just hit you? Just how fast is Roy’s hand speed?
@@GorenGuang sometimes when he would let four or five go at one time they were all hard and fast at the same time so you would just kind of have to let the storm pass. It was hard to pull the trigger and punch with him at the same time although at the end of the video here, I was able to do it, andit was like being in a firefight
@@IceJohnScully Mhmm, that is very difficult to counter, I can see why he was so dominant. Can you give me like an analogy or like a comparative example of how fast. Like, is it like a bullet, did it look like his fists were teleporting, fists faster than the blink of an eye? Like give me an analogy or like a simile to compare his fists to. In camera his punches make me think his hands were organic, at one point in time I legitimately thought he had bionically augmented hands, like literally I thought he had mechanically implanted robotic metal in his arms. In his prime his hand speed made me question the reality of what is humanly physically possible to be able to punch that fast, like I would blink sometimes in front of the TV and I’d see his opponent get stumbled back and his hands were in the same place. And that’s on TV, anyone knows that fists look faster in person than on TV, so if he punches that fast like his hands were so blurry when he threw them, it must much more overwhelmingly fast in real life, so please, give me like an analogy or simile of his fast hands.

I was just curious seems their are so many assholes that will hear someone boxes or does mma and challenge them, I figured most boxers are careful and probably just walk away for obvious reasons. I can’t imagine the damage someone like you could do to some average joe. Thanks for all these great uploads.

@@IceJohnScully , glad to hear another boxer with that perspective. Getting into amateur boxing (mid 1970s-early 80s) actually changed my perspective on fighting and I avoided street fights and unnecessary conflict whenever possible.

Roy was around 15 or 16 here, ice in his 20s more likely but Roy from 25 - 30 was the very best to ever box.

No he was not 15 or 16 here…this was one month before Roy left for the Olympics where he got ROBBED of good. I’m only a few months older than him.

Damn! This John Scilly could box. I haven't seen many a boxer cut the ring off, as he did against admittedly against a young Jones. He's also a cracking, well researched journalist for boxing news. Much respect. Also fought a peaking Michael Nunn, further respect.

Do you think that, Nunn would've been a huge threat to Jones Jr, in the late 90's? I did. Yes, I've been reading Boxing news since I was 16. Keep up the great reports, they're a compelling read. Awesome footage bro, great to see. I just started boxing and i've learned a lot from watching sparring.
Roy was an absolute beast in his day, I am convinced he took something out of his body going first up to HW then back down to LHW immediately, he lost his mojo and never got it back. Its sad to see him fight in small venues for pennies these days.. getting sparkled by people who never would've laid a glove on him in his prime. I hope the same thing does not happen to Chad Dawson in smaller scale, Chad takes a punch but Ward had him dancing, quite disturbing to watch actually. Hope he recovers.
Why is he even fighting now - only reason is that he does not know anything else .. and his whole identity is wrapped up in - I am a boxer . Sad man … he was literally untouchable. If it was not for that one punch KO … we would never have known what type to chin he had . Like a Cassius clay all through his career

Yea, I was there...Gerald won a decision...I never sparred G...toughest sparring has been Jones, Toney, Maske...the hardest puncher though was Lamar Parks...

Damn I’m surprised at the adversity you gave those two I’m from New Haven CT I’ve been at Ring One boxing since I was 13 on and off and recently just started to want to take amateur boxing serious my Coach Brian Clark would tell us About you back then and there was also an old poster I seen of you last Friday so I decided to search you up and came across this video Awesome work!!
Brian is a very very good coach, you are in good hands. We did a lot of traveling together with our teams back in the day.

Roy Jones Jr. took more shots here than he did during the entire 1988 Olympics. Looks like Ice had a brawling style.
I would say that Ice knew he HAD to keep his foot on the gas against Roy.
i know roy was middle, but my style is very similar, he had welter weight hand speed, if i was to fight at 147 i was wondering how well i would do at 147, being that the division has good quality fighters

Sparring is better sometimes LOL...feel more relaxed, able to think better sometimes...to me the best boxing Ive seen has come in GYMS
probly friday and been going in all week end off the week spars are tough when you train twice a day sum time 3 .
People forget but his performance against Lacy was one of the best of his career...if u didnt know him and saw him fight Jeff that night u would say WOW, WHO IS THIS GUY???

Oh Ok, I mean, RJ's style pretty much served him extremely well from middle to heavy..cant see it not serving well in any other weight class...he had it all...

No No, I was there when RJ and G-Man FOUGHT EACH OTHER..1988 in Omaha..I dont know of them sparring each other...they were both at camp together but Gerald wsnt sparring in that camp
No one has Rpoys fight with him on tape as far as I know...I was there though :) ...I am in touch with Gerald's sister and I am looking to do a show at some point to raise money for her to help care for him, Ive been talking to her about it

Sugar Ray Robinson is a master. None of these fighters could touch him.

Roy punched harder....Michael was very smooth but not a puncher. I used to spar James...I was with him in June, its on youtube...I introduced him to his former opponent Reggie Johnson, u should check it out!!! AND Yes, thats Gerald talking to Ray at the end of the video.

Pleasure to meet u as well, my man! I sparred James after he beat Barkley in 1993...RJ was the sharper puncher of the two but JT was very very accurate and solid, too! Nunn threw a lot, he really let his hands go...he scored a lot of KO's too but I always saw them as more of "timing" KO's and wearing guys down with that crazy volume of punches. But in terms of KO power, I didnt feel it from him. Byt, keep in mind, I was in GREAT shape for that fight and I was really motivated so that helped cushion blows, too, I am sure.
So did Jones already fight Mcclellan at that point?

How often did you spar as an amateur? How many times a week?
Personally I used to spar a lot...I was the type, I would spar every day if I could...but really, I probably did a good 3 days a week on average
IceJohnScully Thanks champ. I was wondering because my coach has the guys at the gym sparring almost every day, either 4 or 5 days a week and someone told me they thought that was too much so I wanted to hear your thoughts.
@JORDAN the thing is this...EVERYONE shouldn't spar that much...some guys get burnt out quicker than others...they begin to drag and start doing these wrong because they dont have full muscle strength, etc...on average, I would say thats' a bit much...sparring is GREAT...sparring a lot is great...but sparring too much could very well end up having the opposite affect on a body and mind...
+Jordan McMurray that's alright to me. the more they spar the more they learn. i used to spar almost everyday at the gym if i wanted to. my old gym spar twice a week

Roy was never a welter...but if he was Im sure what he brought to the table would be effective

1. Sometimes u have to plan for later and let a guy use his legs up, man...2. at the end he was on the ropes much more...3. Sometimes with guys like ROY JONES JR. you need them to tire their legs out before u go rushing into them with their full leg and snap power intact

your stile is froom english school right? the good old stile? im a amateur boxer with a record of 3w-0L. im a southpaw and im studing all those boxing schools and diferent stiles (roy, unortodoxes) so what did you find more impressive about this roy jones fight?
They were strong shots...I always felt his left hooks to the body were his strongest shots...
Roy was very patient...very strategic and his power was STRONG
Roy was sharp...great reaction time...great body puncher, especially with the left hook downstairs
