Russia has a fleet of suspected spy ships operating in Nordic waters as part of a program for the potential sabotage of underwater cables and wind farms in the region, according to a joint investigation by the public broadcasters of Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland. Steve Hall, ex-CIA chief on Russian operations joins CNN to discuss. #CNN #News

    • Exactly. If Russia would befriend neighboring countries and establish trade, these surrounding Countries wouldn't need to bother with joining NATO. Apparently Putin thinks it's better to have enemies than friends. If he was a true man and leader he would recognize Ukraine as a sovereign state and establish trade to bolster both countries. Truth of the matter is that during war time you can boost your economy by creating jobs manufacturing weapons. That's what Hitler did.

A lot of pledged tanks have already arrived and are being incorporated in units. Numbers are well over 150 for Leopard 2's, there's also a lot of Leo 1's, and some Challenger 2's and Abrams (I don't think the latter are arriving that soon). French wheeled AMX-10RC have also arrived, and ofc there's a lot of systems like MLRS, self propelled howitzers etc. Yes, the situation is hard but if you want to make a claim that Ukraine is somehow hanging by a thread and about to lose this war, that's just spreading blatant falsehoods.

  • This ship stayed in my country”s coastline (Brazil) for at least 10 days without being discovered. After being located by our Air Force the Brazilian Navy tried to contact it but the vessel did not respond and navigated off the Brazilian coast. In a few days it contacted the Brazilian Navy and requested permission to enter in Rio”s port. Authorisation was granted to the ship, as it isn’t considered an enemy vessel. After some late studies Brazilian authorities found out the Russian ship navigated for days over the fibre optics and communication system in the Atlantic Ocean and perhaps they mapped the Brazilian underwater system of communication. It has happened one or two years ago. 😮

There are things in the work to get an actual millitary going, but still too early for my taste. These efforts did get more attention lately due to the Ukrain war and i would think if EU nations have any brains they will find ways to more closely cooperate millitarily, besides most EU nations are also part of NATO. Biggest hurdles in the past if i am not mistaken were language and fear of not getting prioratised should someone become a target of military aggression. The language part is partly addressed by having certain nations grouping up like france and germany to make mixed battalions, whereby i would see it as easier if one just goes with english all the way.

  • Any (foreign) ship that turns off AIS transponders should get an immediate call from authorities of the country affected, demanding an explanation and that the transponders are turned back on instantly. Zig-zagging (or other suspicious activity) near any sort of vital infrastructure should also result in contact from authorities and ships/helicopters/planes (whichever can get there fastest) sent to the site to escort the intruders out, the same way it's done with airborne territorial infringements. The escorts out should be non-confrontational, but strict and not up for debate. If the Russians want to do "research" at sea, they can do it in their own waters, not near vital infrastructure of other nations.

    @xba2007@xba2007 Жыл бұрын
    • Possible. The issue is that once an explosion happens or anything else those ships won't be safe even in Russian ports and neither will Russian warships. Also, you can't "scan" for this. You have to search for it. Those remote control devices leave traces behind and helps with locating devices and bombs. Also, the Russians have problems with these technologies. If they cannot maintain a tank, anything that's installed so deep underwater will surely have issues. These underwater devices would have problems even if they were more advanced and better designed and better maintained. Also, just finding these devices can make these spy ships ACTUALLY become ghost ships.

  • Reminds me of the late 60's when I was a merchant seaman. Just past the 12 mile limit of the east coast were Russian fishing trawlers spying on US. But I was a crew member on a research vessel that was spying on activities in the South Pacific in the late 70's. I remember in port they brought these men aboard that their title was overseers of some research that was testing the waters.

He was getting pulled backwards with water coming over his transom and was just lucky enough to cut the cable of his own net to keep from sinking. He was a poor working man and that net cost a lot. I've hated Russians ever since. This happened off the Jersey Coast near the Delaware Bay.

      @pal6636@pal6636 Жыл бұрын
    • @@pal6636 Yep, usually. I have no idea why that particular one wasn't escorted out when a US nuclear sub was in our waters... I don't know if they didn't know about that particular ship before that incident or if they wanted the ships crew and the Russian goverment to think that they had gotten away with it in order to identify agents on land or what the heck that was all about... But if they where known then that information better be bloody good to risk them picking up a US nuclear subs sound profile... Unless it's known that they already have it or something... Perhaps it was intentional? To feed them with a fake sound profile or something? I don't know... I just know that our public broadcasting services learned that it actually happened, and I believe they even caught it on tape sailing past the US sub, although honestly I haven't watched the documentary yet, just the talk about it. I'll have to get around to doing so soon... Another thing worth noting is that Norways approach has long been to keep the the relationship with Russia as non antagonistic as possible. And I believe our government generally has been intentionally "turning a blind eye" to a lot of what the Russians are doing as long as they behave somewhat. Those 15 diplomats that we expelled recently has been in our country for a long time, and been known agents for most of that time. But it's only recently that they've been going too far making expelling them necessary. Basically like Sweden and Finland Norway has tried to make Russia feel like we're not a threat. Allowing them to see roughly what's going on, and that we're not actively preparing for a NATO invasion of Russia, during exercises is probably acceptable to our government. But there should be limits... Subs need stealth to work well... I don't know... Perhaps NATO wa testing the stealth of their subs, intentionally letting the Russians try to pick them up to see what Russian equipment is capable of picking up? That's of course assuming that the communication between the Russian spy ships and Russia can be intercepted to determine what they picked up... But yeah, I'm just guessing at this point...

    • In 1975 when the USS Hancock was rushing with a relief force to Koh Tanh Island, Russian trawlers kept cutting in front of us to slow us down. I was on the flight deck in the first wave to go to the island and it was announced we would launch in 15 minutes...as the time got near to launch, the Russian trawlers continued to cut in front of us...about 5 minutes before launch, the Captain of the Hancock announced that the Combat Operation had been called off since all Marines were off the Island. At that point the Hancock made a sharp turn to the port side just as a Russian trawler cut in front of it, standing on the flight deck I saw that they were "slightly" bumped and the Russian crew was knocked about the deck of their trawler! Shame I didn't have a camera to record this incident! Knowing what we know now, it was great that we didn't launch, since I would not be posting on this venue today!

  • Russia was the first country to do a cyber attack prior to a land invasion when they invaded Georgia. This scenario was highlighted during that period. Not surprising that Russia is looking to do this prior to making a large military move.

    • Can’t do that in international waters (including economic zones). These ships keep themselves out of other nations territorial waters. And other more stealthy measures are used if/for spying inside territorial waters. Possibly ships that are truly merchant, besides small compartments the crew doesn’t know anything or little about. From where unmanned autonomous underwater drones and perhaps even flying drones are launched in busy and noisy harbors when the ship is loading/unloading goods.

    • @@abrakkehakka1357ell, some of those 50 ships mentioned has been identified as sailing right past a US nuclear sub docked in a Norwegian harbour... Well within our territorial waters, to put it mildly... Granted, in that case it was a "fishing vessel" not a "research vessel" like this one... A fishing vessel that just happens to always be around NATO exercises and the like... As for boarding it... They're armed, and a international incident between Russia and a NATO country isn't exactly desired for those of us that have a border with Russia... Norwegian authorities have known about over 100 such ships for a long time. This was more a case of civilian journalists identifying about 50 of them and their activities...

The US might have an edge now due to how technological our world is right now. But don't underestimate them... Their problem isn't really a lack of competent spies from what I understand as much as just a incompetent leadership that promotes lying instead of telling undesirable truths... Be that with intelligence services, research or industry...
