In this woodturning video, I twice turn a 27" Pecan Crotch piece into a live edge bowl. This is one of the many piece inspired by @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop with his amazing live-edge work!

  • That was a beast of a project, Daniel, but well worth it. That piece is beautiful. It looks like you'll be turning pecan for a long time to come. Bill

    • @@TournageDubois it’s funny or coincidental that I’m coming up against a few of the exact same issues with my current project. Unbalanced end grain turning. If it holds together, and I don’t make a lamp shade, I’ll be grinding the bottom of my plate as well. Using Mahoney’s too. Not sure if u have or not, but don’t be afraid to paint the oil on the bark. It works great.

  • What a beast! I agree that pecan gets really hard when it's dry. I'm finish turning so pecan bowls right now and I'm having to resharpen after just a few passes. However, it is beautiful with an oil finish like you used. Love the feathering in your bowl. Bravo Dan!

  • Excellent work on this BEAUTIFUL bowl. I like the walnut oil on this one. You may find that after about a week a second/third coat will really give the piece a rich finish that is so inviting. BTW, did you brush some oil on the bark? It will help it stay on over time.

    • Thanks, Doug! I will brush on some oil with the second coat and third, but was trying to get it done in time for this morning... LOL
