“It's easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled.” ― Mark Twain
That’s a great saying and very true but there is no actual proof Mark Twain said it and that quote being attributed to Mark Twain was actually that misinformation spreading so much that people started to think he wrote or said it. He did once write “How easy it is to make people believe a lie, and [how] hard it is to undo that work again!” In his autobiography which might be the origin of the quote we now know.
Do you have any thoughts of your own, or do you communicate purely via the medium of misinterpreting quotes?

Ego and narcissism. People need to feel like they're "ahead of the crowd", they're in on a special secret and they're some kind of low-effort rebel.
The main reason why I don't believe conspiracy theories is because of this.
AAAHAHA low-effort rebel!!
That may be for you or the way you think and perceive it but for me I feel it's way more about paranoia and fear. Most conspiracy theories like example someone watching you through a hidden camera don't appeal to stroking people's egos as much as fear... idk about you but I don't feel above others by knowing that I would feel a little frightened...

I find that a lot of what motivates individuals to come to the wrong answer is primarily fear and the seemingly universal denial of one's mortality and lack of acceptance that we are in control of minimal aspects of our lives. Nate Silver makes this point in his book “The Signal and the Noise”, but it touches pretty much all areas of our lives, not just things involving conspiracy theories. He makes the point that it’s not lack of information that leads to ignorance of the truth, but rather too much information. When we have a wealth of information out there, we pan pick out the info that supports our preconceived notions and ignore everything that contradicts it. And since we have so much info to support our side, that makes us feel confident that our side is right. Never mind that, just because we have data, it doesn’t make the data reliable.

It is very scary and dangerous. In the case of Ukraine, the new con theory that NATO is part of the Global new world order and conspired with Ukraine to cause the war means the victims are being blamed and trolled on the internet. They think the Ukrainians deserve it and the war is all lies! Very sad..
3:17 que Adam's quote from mythbusters. "I reject your reality and substitute my own."
the amount of people trying to argue in the comments are literally proving his point
The best conspiracy theories are those that don't seem outlandish. As for myself, I don't usually ascribe to any conspiracy theory per se, but some "theories" out there would not surprise me if they turned out to be real.
Yes it makes fiscal sense to fake a moon landing, not saying they did but so much cheaper and easier for instance
I think most conspiracy theories start to fall apart once you realise just how much people had to be in on the conspiracy how much people had to keep quiet
Oh man, a few months before the pandemic, my mom was asking me about conspiracy theories and why/how so many people bought into them. I told her it might be more comforting to think some bad guy is causing the chaos and they have the power to stop it whenever they want, instead of the reality that some chaos is actually out of our control. Now later in the year, she is a conspiracy nut, all of the phrases used in this video I'm familiar with because of her, and I know it's because she rather believe some evil group has all the power to put an end to this, instead of the reality that the virus's existence is out of our hands, all we can do is preventative work.
yep my mum is exactly the same. it’s so difficult to discuss anything like this with her because she immediately dismisses my points and regards her information that she gets from the telegram or whatever it’s called as absolute truth. people like that only “research” what they want to hear and it’s so hard to then actually try and get your own point across or even try to understand where they are coming from. she also told me if i get the vaccine i’m not welcome home 😂😂😂🤣 so yeah, pretty far gone lol
I have a friend who is the same. It's getting harder and harder to talk to her.
People really need to stop doing their own "research" and start looking at actual research. Unfortunately, a lot of cutting edge research is hidden behind paywalls for various journals. And a lot of the people who really NEED to see that research don't have access from an accredited post secondary institution (i.e. an actual college)
Totally agree! Almost like they don't want the normal, everyday person to have access to it. So all your left with is due diligence on your own OR believe the narrative your told.
well looking into peer-reviewed journals IS a kind of research. Every single scientist does it for their own research. Some research is MERELY looking into other research and deriving conclusions aka metanalysis. Also, you don't really need to have the full copy of every journal. A lot of research can be done by just the abstracts of the papers and checking them against each other. The problem is not that there is not enough research. The problem is most people don't know how to go about it. And IMO, this and critical thinking are what should have the highest importance in schools.
@@slanguagefreak2388 I guess it didn't come off right, but I was just digging at the fact that people call Google searches research. I know what research is, I have to do it
@@managersejinstan1523 yeah, well, people SHOULD be more careful about their sources, I 100% agree with that
It's not just that. You can show reliable sources to people and they still wouldn't trust it. People need to be taught critical thinking skills, way back in school.
Conspiracy theories also boost people’s egos. It gives you a feeling of knowing what others (the “sheep”) do not know. This probably gives a great feeling of superiority.
ur right these conspiracy theorists think that the government doesn't have their best interest at hand but they are wrong because i saw a video on yt now im "educated" i wont travel by plane to stop "climate change" im sure bill gates and the elite will follow suit its not like he had 59 flights in 2017 or anything but im sure the elite will stop flying there private jets and driving their lambos to stop climate change.

Once that line is crossed it’s very difficult to go back. it stops being healthy criticism and becomes flat out lying. At some point a new reality is formed and all new info is processed through that, which is no longer “real”reality
My parents (and now my brother) are both consumed by the conspiracy theory world right now and I feel so alone stuck in the house with them in isolation. They keep trying to save me from the "indoctrination of the government" but THEY are the ones trying to indoctrinate me. lollykills That is so sad, I’m sorry lollykills. If it helps, my husband and I both have a very conservative extended family who act similarly to your parents and brother. My husband has spent hours upon hours diligently researching these conspiracies because he hates seeing our family falling down that rabbit hole. Some family members fight him tooth and nail on it, but a couple have graciously thanked him for all the knowledge he presents. (Through Facebook) It is so exhausting, as I’m sure you know, trying to show them that some of what they believe to be true is so incredibly unlikely, it may as well be on par with Greek mythology. And at its worst, it can destroy family bonds. I hope your parents realize how much they are ostracizing you by acting that way around you, whether they mean to or not.
Conspiracy theory is a bit of a loaded term, but it's still very important to think critically about things, especially if it's something you believe.
You must be one of the special people who is in on a giant secret huh?
Simple explanation- government, media lied so many times that no one believes a word they're saying any more, and know the truth is, most of the times, something totally different.

They're so pretentious about it I can't stand it.
Or maybe they've lived through it, have the knowledge of experience to see it and usually parents annoy kids no matter what. If they were clueless sheeple, would that make your existence better or just less engaged?
@@_laurenolo_ What I think is just let them live their "theories " out. Its less fighting just to let them think they are right instead of arguing with them. If they are so deep in to these ridiculous theories giving them evidence won't change anything and just make them go even deeper into the theory because they think they are not sheep.
@@groovygrover190 I'm not sure you read lollykills correctly. They stated that their parents are the ones that believe everyone else is sheeple, not that lollykills thinks the parents are sheeple.
I've always thought conspiracy theorists seek to make themselves feel empowered because they claim to know the absolute 'truth', to know what the 'common people' don't. My aunty has an intellectual disability and has experimented with drugs, has/had an abusive partner and lives very lowly socioeconomically and she is very much the conspiracy theorist - I believe, without any sort of malice or superiority towards her, that she believes in these outlandish theories as a way to cope with feeling powerless and out of control of her situation. It makes you feel like you're not a dummy and you're a part of a club of like minded people. Could you argue it's almost sort of semi-religious? Edit: She's not a dummy (btw), she's absolutely incredible with recalling names, dates and faces.
I find that is the same situation with people who lack empathy for animals and who believe humans are superior to all. I find that they’re usually of low intelligence which led me to believe they have a human superiority complex because they are so lacking in life that believing they are superior beings makes them feel better about themselves. The same could be said for conspiracy theorists. After reading your comment, I just realized all the conspiracy theorists I know are all mostly of low intelligence too (high school dropouts, no higher education, etc)
Mm-hm. I took up conspiracies as a way to cope with my depression. *One of the worst decisions of my life.* My depression went untreated for *years* , and if I hadn't joined the New Age conspiracy cult I probably wouldn't have gotten this bad.
yeah, well sadly intelligence and wisdom aren't always/exactly one in the same. having the ability to string two thoughts together doesn't make one brilliant, and having a doctorate or diploma doesn't make one an expert in all fields in which they've studied, and especially not studied
I agree, there’s a woman at my job who chats on and on about conspiracy theories and I know now it’s because she loves & needs to feel RIGHT. What confirmed this is one cloudy day she said it gonna rain and I made a comment like “oh I didn’t see that in the news but yeah we’ll see” and after it did she was so elated going on and on that she was right….that it rained. Like it was the greatest feeling for her. She’s also old, disabled and quite lonely.
@@cheyennecolin5546 I'm also disabled, so I can understand that we often feel this huge loss of independence, not being able to drive or get around without help. That and sometimes we ask ourselves, why me? Why did this condition/disease/event have to happen to me? She may be feeling loss of control in her life and this is her way of combating it. It's not healthy but I get why people act like they do.
This has not aged well

Believing in a conspiracy theory isn’t comforting if anything it’s more terrifying
I disagree, believing that our lives are controlled by forces we aren't seeing provides a sense of structure to the world, a sense that someone has a plan somewhere, even if it's an evil plan. And that is a lot less existentially terrifying than "life is chaos and no one anywhere has control and no one has any real cosmic answers"

Agreed, I look at facts, books and physical research. Not the internet as much as I can. I'm barely even on social media except here. I refuse to let ignorance rule me, I hope others do the same.
I used to love conspiracy theories, but then 2020 happened. Now, I feel like I’m over them. Except there’s some great conspiracy theories with credible evidence. The 2020 “Q” ones, and others have zero credence to them. As a conspiracy theory lover, I’m angry at people who don’t do their research. Then, blindly believe things, and worse repeat the claims.
