Frightened tourists ducked between seats during a tense standoff between a bull elephant and a safari truck in South Africa's Pilanesberg National Park.
The safari guide who warded off the elephant was praised by wildlife experts.
Hendry Blom, a bystander who recorded the incident, told ABC News: "We were definitely scared, especially for the people in the truck because we thought they might die."
No one was injured in the incident, though Mankwe Game Trackers told ABC News one family had been offered counseling after being left "extremely rattled."

All wild animals go crazy during that time. The instinct to breed is so strong that if they don't get to, they're looking to attack anything!! litterLly

    • During a unique sexual period called musth, elephant bulls can have testosterone levels that are 60 times higher than normal, and in some cases up to 140 times higher. This hormonal surge can cause elephant bulls to become aggressive and seek fights with other males.

Fire was used against war elephants and they would run amok, trampling friendly troops, as they broke rank. Usually animals such as pigs were covered in tar and then set on fire and made to run at the elephants. Main Reason elephants were rarely used effectively was because they were impossible to control.

    • That’s why they are deified as removal of obstacles in Ganesha. Elephants have been used in forestry work in South Asia for thousands of years. Even with the invention of machines they are still more efficient in moving logs and maneuvering through dense forest with the fuel being what they eat. And they move the trucks they load with logs that get stuck in the forest all the time. I’m surprised that’s all it did. It wasn’t aggressive, more defensive.
