This is the story of Apollo The Shire. It's not meant to focus on his past. I don't want to discuss the negative or put blame on anyone. I’m grateful for the path that brought him to me. It's the story of what happened after our paths crossed. Enjoy!

The universe put the two of you together for a reason, and im super happy that your video came across my feed. May the universe bless you and your family with many more happy years with your horses. • Thank you ! For almost 3 years I have watched KZhead channels about horses as therapy. I cared for my husband with stagev4 PROSTRATE cancer and he passed in March of this year. At night after I could get him comfortable, I needed to calm myself and began watching World Horse Rescue out of the UK. From there I searched for every horse channel I could find because watching rescue horses or horses in training for different events , etc, just relaxed me. My sadness was relieved and the horses just gave me a Peace I cannot explain. I loved the teaching me about whatever the horse, rescuer, organization, All of it taught me a great deal of new things to better understand Life and our connection to these most beautiful of God's Creatures. All animals actually, but horses are my favorite. I've never ridden or owned a horse, I simply love them and what they give to humans. Now as I grieve and try to adjust to this new chapter of my life, it's even more important for me to have time with people like you and your Wonderful Apollo to sooth my pain and give me a special time to watch and enjoy mabevan abandoned horse come back to life or a human in mutual need of love and care for each other when perhaps THE WORLD had given up on both of them. You both have worked so very hard for each other and Now you reap the rewards and it's so good of you to bring us strangers along for the " ride" so to speak! Look forward to seeing more of the two of you with the pretty Blue Ribbons hanging from Apolos' bridle! And YES , too bad you can't have a dozen little Shires just like him! He is Gorgeous! Good Luck with all your future shows.😍🐴💙🥕🥇🏆

But he really has blossomed! Well done. In this time of spiraling norms here we see what the world could be like by following our higher self. I am especially happy for your daughter who when she reaches my age of 81 will still be telling her favorite story about her bond with her Dad and his Apolllo. What you are putting into that horse I feel pretty sure you are putting even more into the world. Everyone deserves a friend like you Mr Michalek. Finally, what a great film, I'm pretty sure you could win the prize in that catagory too.

  • Thank you for sharing...I just found Apollo. Watched him getting new shoes. His eyes made me melt. Deep and warm. The two of you seem well matched. Gentle/kind but driven to enjoy life to the fullest. Side note: My girlfriend is a riding instructor. I went with her to the Iowa State fair and it was so much fun. But the true star of the show was the Shire horses! Everyone lined up to watch them come in and the sound they made when the hoofs hit the ground was awe inspiring. Big hugs to you and Apollo!

  • This is the best video I have seen in a very, very long time. So inspirational to see the transformation in Apollo. I am so happy that you persevered in the beginning when he obviously needed you the most. I, too, have always loved draft horses - ever since discovering the Clydesdales decades ago. You and Apollo have widened my horizons, as before seeing this video, it never occurred to me that a Shire could be so agile and do so well at dressage! Absolutely wonderful to see.

    • Thank you!! Yes my trainer raised an eyebrow the first time I brought apollo for training, like… I guess I do my best. 🤨 Now he loves him and raves about how great a horse he is. There are limitations of course. But all I’m interested in is pushing apollo to be the best he can be. Whatever level that is… is fine with me.

My heart wishes you, your family and Apollo all happiness and fulfillment.

    • I always avoided stallions and especially lead mare. When my friend bought a mare, turns out she was a lead mare, almost killed him. I didnt know, got in paddock , played with her and my friend came with a look of dread like "get out of there" very worried for me. She clicked with me, and that was the end of her bad behavior. She ended up being the most confident horse I ever seen. Thats what I wanted, a confident one that would let me know if something was risky. Better the horse stops than go through a stupid command. I can try to reach a tree branch, and she'll come over like " I am a giant, get on my shoulders " . With everyone else, she was and remain independant and not that interested. Anyhow, the reason I wasnt finding the right horse was that I was avoiding the horses more likely to have the personality traits i wanted! I wanted a coworker, not a slave, and the mean 2100lbs lead mare Shire was exactly that and she found me. Just like santiago'S story, the horse finds you. The fact he didnt go and bought sight unseen is a blessing, else he would not have bought it and missed out ! Incredible stroke of luck, and that shire will never forget. They have excellent memory and will be forever.

  • In 26 years with my horse, he never stopped to like his bit. I took the mildest one available, it helped him train lateral flexibility and I just held the bridle in front of his muzzle. He kind of put it on himself, opened his mouth and let me slip the leather over his ears. Never ever a problem. He also reacted very well, most of the time. Saw people try to ride with a non-fitting sidepul or bosal unable to ride straight or properly train their animals. Dangerous to be in the same ring with them. Some folks have NO CLUE. Very nice and talented, impressive horse you have! Beautiful animal, good work - lots of fun for you 2 and a veeeery long time together for you all!

    • @@apollotheshire yes I will. Your Shire would be wayyyyy tooooo huge for me but still beautiful. The main thing is you feel good with him. ;) Yes, I was kind of lucky, no big issues, some ups and downs but like in a human relationship thats normal. ;) Got him young and spoiled him all by myself. And, I forgot to mention, some folks are able to ride withoug a bit in the horse's mouth but its kind of an art to do it perfectly. Guys like Jean Claude Dysli i. e. were masters of that art. One never ever stops to learn when it comes to horses. And sometimes you have to accept boundaries and learn more before trying something new.

    • @@apollotheshire It is so awesome to see, because I experienced something very similar with my boy. When I bought him, he did not look like much, very lanky and thin. He was supposed to be from the Iberian peninsular, but there must have gotten some drafter in between - he had rather large hooves and some feathers. Luckily, he was mostly fit, according to the vet at that time (just two years younger, from 5 years to 3 - just used to saddle and bridle, no balance found yet). But when he got fed properly - oh boy, he became a handful. He never really got the news he was not a stallion anymore, and we had several discussions about that from horse to human. But we got by. It was more difficult to work around the fact that he was a workaholic and believed to be able to do everything - which he could not yet. So we had some detours, but in the end he showed a very beautiful, natural passage and piaffe, on his way to airs above the ground. Sadly, that is where our time together ended. My bad cough got worse and worse, I had to around him wearing a dustmask. My doctor said I had to stop being around a horse, because I was highly allergic. Otherwise I had to get new lungs. So...I stopped training him further and found a new home for him. It went well, he had a very caring lady now who gave him everything. All that is left for him is looking at horse videos, because being around them even for a few hours is still dangerous for me. I was very sad...but I also had a two year old daughter at that time.

  • You made an old man cry, from my memories. I had a love of the XL draft horses, being 6'8" tall and 275#. I had bought a 10 acre horse ranch and bought a grey spotted Percheron on advice of my vet. He was 17.2 1700# and was very agreeable and athletic. But after 6 months he colicked, and we couldn't save him. The necropsy showed he had twisted 30 feet of his intestine, so I made the right decision not to operate. A few months later I went to the Topeka, IN Draft horse sale. Came home with an 18.3, 2000# all black Percheron, sold by Disney World. He had gotten a bad attitude and barn sour. After three weeks he came around. My trainer almost died when she saw him, since she was only 5' tall! I had built a mounting block and she hated it! After TWO LAPS around my outside arena, she said, PIECE OF CAKE!! He was so happy, and willing to learn something new! At the end of the week, she had HIM BOWING, NOSE IN THE DIRT!! Brought the stirrup down from4 1/2" to only 2 feet! We were training him in Dressage, just like you are. Not the most dainty horse, like the Morgans and Arabians. but by god he was doing half passes! After two years I had to get a divorce, and had to give him to a woman friend. My sweet EX took ALL MY PICTURES AND VIDEOS OF MY DUKE. I have only two pictures, so watching your big black boy work and ride, really brought some tears to my eyes. Keep up the videos for us please.

If nothing else, it keeps them amused :-) Misty finds entertainment in knocking hers around, so get a sturdy one.
