Forensics Expert Examines 25 More Crime Scene Investigations From Film & TV | WIRED
Crime scene analyst and investigator Matthew Steiner examines more forensics investigations from movies and television. Are bodies found in freezers like the "Layla" scene from Goodfellas? Is the autopsy scene from Silence of the Lambs true to life? How much does NCIS actually get right?

The “tongue test” is a time honored test for determining bone vs stone in the field. But it wouldn’t be needed here as it’s obviously bone.
I was helping to find some missing boaters. We finally located the last body, at this point the body had been in the water for roughly three days. The stink was unbelievable. The coroner shows up and starts taking deep breaths, while everyone else is trying and mostly failing to not vomit. After stuffing my stomach back in I asked her if she was literally the hardest person on the planet or did she know something about dealing with the ungodly smell. That's when I learned two things. First wa that yes she was indeed the hardest person on the planet and the second was nose blindness. Just take deep breaths until the smell goes away. If you want to die take a shot every time they say unsub during an episode of Criminal Minds.
"What I DON'T like is that she smashed her face into the towel" lol

You can tell this man loves his craft. Awesome to hear him talk about details and Sherlock. I had no idea Arthur Conan Doyle had such an influence, that’s amazing.
I love that he treats comedies and dramas with the same level of review.
For him it probably is not that big of a difference; crimesenes in movies I would guess is the subjekt that is treated with the least care of realism in movies.
I cracked up like I have never cracked up before when he continued in the exact same tone to say he never encountered a ghost
"Who licks bones?" Not forensic anthropologists, maybe, but archaeologists sure do.

I love that the Forensic Expert here is giving credit to the shows and films for trying to be accurate and telling us how to do it better, cause writers can come here and take notes
Writers and directors doesn't go for accuracy. They go for chock value and drama. We'll never get proper and accurate depiction of these kind of things in movies, because reality is never as exciting as movies and TV.
I definitely came here to take notes, in case I need it in my book
God, can you imagine the things this guy and his teammates have seen over the years.
i think the cauldron filled with mercury and a skull inside sums it up
he seems kind of geeky and nerdy, 2 very underrated traits to help cope with seeing brutal crime scenes.
It's nothing compared to my deathly brain :D..
“I don’t know why they’re riding horses to the crime scene” -Someone who has never spent time in Comstock, Texas
7:55 That's why I love Midsomer Murders. Detective often asks "could this be a woman" and pathologist looks up at him as says, "yes" with indifference.
The vapor rub under the nose was probably more for the audience than for the sake of “accuracy.” It reminds the audience of the smell of decomposition and enhances the emotional responses of the viewer. (IMO)
Mike Appleget that makes sense! When I saw the movie I thought it was to be more accurate and I liked the grittiness, the reality of death smelling bad. And it did make me feel closer to the situation! So in a way it was accurate for reminding the audience of the smell, just not in the actual behavior of the actors. Interesting!
Nope, there was a cold going around.
Kara Bench agreed. Plus most of us know the smell of Vick’s, but not a corpse.
Idk at which point you get used to smell, one time I was in morgue I wore a mask, put a hand over the mask and barely breathed the whole time because I was afraid to through up
Mike Appleget vapor rub is BS!! That just opens up your nasal cavity and makes it worst! No one uses that. It’s strictly visual for the movie
Bone licking is actually something Archaeologists do if a bone fragment is hard to identify in the field. I agree that it's not something you would do in a lab with a giant bone fragment like that, but it did bring me back...
That was amazingly interesting, shocking, and disgusting all at the same time... uh... thanks for sharing?...
In the show, she was doing it to see if it was real or fake
Does it have to be done exactly with your mouth? You can catch whatever like this
The fastest, easiest way is to wipe it off and put it against your tongue. If it sticks it's bone. In most cases its animal bone not human, and you could get some germs or bacteria in your mouth but it doesn't seem to vex Archaeologists. Also, I was never the person to do it, but there was always someone in the group that was willing 😄
Everyone calm down, you can use mouthwash and don't need to swallow. Wouldn't want to lick a syphilis ridden one though!
gotta love their editing.. this guy has supernatural powers.. he NEVER blinks while watching the scenes. then all of a sudden.. blam! he dives right into the explanation. rookies.

Finally, that always annoyed me about that Sherlock scene! I write left handed but would hold a gun in my right hand.
In the Sherlock series, John Watson actually is right handed but shoots with his left.

Same (just right-handed but shoot left). Left eye dominant, seemed easier to learn to shoot leftie than to re-train my eyes.

Thank you for teaching me the term "cross-dominance". I write with my left hand but I do most other things with my right. While I do have about equal skill with both hands for a few things, I didn't think it was nearly enough for me to consider myself ambidextrous.

Just for the record, on that Bones licking bones one, she was checking to make sure it WAS bone, not if it was human or not. This is a trick archaeologists use (at least getting a finger wet and then touching the material) rocks and some ceramic types will not stick to your tongue, while bones do. On stab wounds, the height thing was an early forensics theory that got dropped after several cases disproved it, but it sounds so cool in dialogue. There is a rather over looked scene poking fun at its overuse in Tom Baker era Doctor Who episode 'Talons of Wang Chiang' where the coroner makes the comment about knowing the height by angle of the wound. Where Savage Warrior Leila just looks at him "But when aiming for the heart we were always taught to stab up under the breastbone." Which put her entry wound at the same angle as the much shorter murderer's.
