She mentioned that Jennifer Hudson had a nice, clear voice, and implied that she along with Fantasia were being considered for the role. She literally said, "Could be Jennifer, could be Fantasia..." and then Wendy chimed in with "Queen Latifah?" to which Aretha very sharply went "no ..." lol. White legends are portrayed multiple times by multiple people and it is never viewed in a negative light. Marilyn Monroe can be redone millions of times and people will watch. Why is it different in our community? Why do we feel so disrespected to tell the story of a legend that celebrates them and then turn around and tell it in a different way to celebrate them again? Why can we not celebrate black excellence when we see it period?!?!?! I know some African Americans struggle with Erivo’s previous elitist tweets, or Africans playing important roles but must the whole movie with other black greats be dismissed? Cynthia Erivo has a wonderful voice and is an accomplished black actor. I have been trying to watch her version. Jennifer Hudson is fabulous!! I will watch her version. The two worked side by side in “The Color Purple” and gave me chills. What is the issue? I know who Aretha said she wanted, and let’s be honest she also said she want d Halle Berry, but I can’t say that she would not have been honored to be this celebrated. The division among us will forever prevent us from rising up.

So cool that the Queen of Soul herself wanted Jennifer to play her. Still getting that R-E-S-P-E-C-T she so very much deserves. This movie looks classy, elegant. And I love that Jennifer obviously studied Aretha's voice. I hate when they make a biopic and the actor sounds NOTHING like the original or even remotely close to it. Already a hit in my eyes. I didn’t like the cinematic portrayal in Genius Aretha, and I wish that I could have added to the development of the storyline. It left a lot to be desired, as seemingly few people were shocked by how Reverend Franklin neglected and influenced that poor child and then blamed HER for doing what she saw him do. Anyway, I hope that this one gives more attention to chronological order.

To think...I remember seeing Jennifer Hudson from the beginning on American Idol, and I knew then that she was going places. I just didn't know HOW much she would be going places! So proud of her! She really came from humble beginnings and that American Idol show changed her life so much!
