Our 1987 Gillig Phantom School Bus Conversion (known far and wide on KZhead as Gilligan Phantom) is finally for sale! We had an incredible adventure in our self-built bus conversion traveling 25,000 miles around the USA and while we will miss it dearly it's time to pass it on to somebody else hoping to do the same. While this is the end of the road for us I have a sneaking suspicion you'll see me do another bus conversion some day and I'll always be here hoping to inspire you to pursue your own dreams by telling my family's story and the stories of others!

I’m currently converting my own rig… because I can’t afford a large chick of money upfront. But man, this bus is SWEET! I watch your videos to get ideas for mine.

I only have one problem I have a disability of neuropathy from my diabetes but I’m am really getting that under control. I can just hear the road calling me.

    • Sorry you're feeling sad Tammy. Thank you so much for riding with us all of these years! I wish we could keep living the buslife too. Maybe we can pull it off again someday. We will be spending all summer adventuring in our new truck camper. It's definitely not better than a bus, it's just a very different form of travel and camping. I'm not even sure how it will work out! We'd really love to keep Gilligan but we built him to be a full time family home, and my hope is that that's what he will continue to be.

  • 90k is a pretty tall ask. The fit, finish and material use isn’t anywhere near what someone could get for 90k invested into a bus they buy themselves. I get that putting a price on your memories and personal effort is hard, but man. It looks rough for the asking price. I hope you sell it for what you’re asking! But I suspect this will be like so many other modded vehicles - worth far more in the maker’s eye, than the market’s.

    @meatblade3490@meatblade3490 Жыл бұрын
    • Admittedly you can make this with about $55K and 800 to 1000 hours. So I guess the question is...if you want a 40 foot bus conversion, how much is your hour worth and how good are your skills already? The answer is going to be different for everybody. If you've seen my videos I'm all about building your own bus but it's not for everybody who wants a bus and therein lies the market. It's not so much made up of opinions but of comparable conversions currently for sale and it hangs in the balance of the hours of your life available for the effort and your desire to get what you want without the work oh and of course the money in your bank account.

  • I guess at $89,000 it's probably cheaper and probably better made/insulated than a new/used Class A motor home of similar size, but it's still a big chunk of change.

    • @@anttoeknee9672 I agree, but many people don't have the patience and/or stamina to build their own. If that's the case, this is still cheaper than a new/used Class A motor home of a similar size.

  • I love this bus and I have enjoyed watching your videos but to be honest at the end of the day it's a 36 year old bus and almost a hundred grand I could buy a very nice rv that is new and has a warranty.

    @michealfrench6488@michealfrench6488 Жыл бұрын
    • It really depends on where your priorities align and I completely get why you may feel that way about the price. I have spent a lot of time talking about the pros and cons of a class A RV vs a school bus conversion over the years in videos and with bus and rv dwellers and unless we're talking about something unique and built on a Coach Bus chassis (which a Gillig Phantom has a lot more in common with than a school bus) I'm picking the bus conversion. With a well built used bus I have little concern of depreciation which you're going to experience heavily with a new RV. I have a rig built on a steel and aluminum platform, not fiberglass and 1x2's, quality hardware which RV's lack, Birch plywood construction vs manufactured materials and vinyl walls. A bus can be purpose built for a use case like ours has been. An RV has been mass produced for profit. New RV's lack meaningful solar power, don't have lithium battery banks, don't use reliable Victron components. A bus is more exciting, fun, has more character, can be more aesthetic. Rv's are mild mannered, sensible, similar to other rigs at the campground. But realistically and probably most importantly there is no Class A 40 ft RV brand new for $100K. There just isn't. For $100K you're getting a 5 year old 32 ft gas front engine RV and I'm sure that's fine for you but it's not really in line with our bus. A new 40 ft Pusher built on a coach chassis is absolutely north of $300K. Sorry for the essay!

      @MobileDwellings@MobileDwellings Жыл бұрын
    • @@MobileDwellings I absolutely agree 100% with everything you said my biggest concern would still be with the 30 year old drive train.

      @michealfrench6488@michealfrench6488 Жыл бұрын
    • I'm going to pick the all mechanical Cummins 8.3, DT466, or Detroit Diesel 6v92 in a big rig. I can't afford to bring a bus to a shop when electronics go bad. I need to be able to fix it myself and with either of those 3 drivetrains, pre electronic injection I can do it. Modern engines...not at all. At least not on the side of the road. Its the tow truck every time. A couple of grand for emergencies can go a long way with diy repairs and we didn't spend much over the 25,000 miles we put on the bus. Replaced a couple older coolant hoses, a brake line, and a governor. That's about it. But I've never had a warranty before and I'm sure the peace of mind would feel good!

      @MobileDwellings@MobileDwellings Жыл бұрын
    • @@MobileDwellings Hi Justin, I agree it's more like a coach bus than a school bus. Especially as far as power train and chassis type. It's a beautiful bus, though I honestly believe it's priced a little high, check out the In and Out Burger MCI bus conversion was for sale. (I can look for the link if you'd like, it was posted by Andrew Steele) I realize it's not an RV type setup, more of a mobile office setup. I'm just basing my opinion based on that and other bus conversions I've seen I mean no disrespect at all, none is intended. It's absolutely beautiful and well done job on everything, your work is top notch. I'm also sure that power train will hold up for many years and miles to come. JMHO on the price. Your videos and family are amazing, I'll always referencing them now and in the future.
