  • Love the fact that everyone involved, including the commentators knew what they were in for in this game. None of these tackles (and headbutt) would be tolerated now and were pretty outrageous at the time, however all the players were just getting on with it and trying to win the game.

    • funny how I just watched Barca vs Real Madrid game highlights 2014 year and a real madrid player touched Neymar in the penalty area while he was after the ball, and Neymar just fell on the ground and that was a red card for the R.M. player... While you could see clearly that Neymar just got touched by the hand or barely grabbed for a second and he fell on the ground.... Nowadays they are playing too soft...

    • Because he would have been sent off in an FA cup game. Ferguson would give him a wide latitude but there was limits to what he could get away with. It must have been an absolute struggle for Keane and Cantona to actually not lose their cool. Cantona actually slipped at one point and tried to stomp Jones who was on the ground in a tackle.

    • @james It’s somewhere in between I think. Football as a spectacle was better to watch then. Players were committed & earned far less in comparison to today. However, like every “business” which is what it is now, the powers that be have to protect the stars of today as the football clubs are spending fortunes on transfer fees & wages for players. If you worked this back 30 years ago, the players were not earning excessively more than a lot of other working professionals…. Then came the big time & money from tv & now we have a more of a World Series than what football was..

  • I saw Wimbledon squish United in what I think was Fergie's second game in charge. I always felt that the '94 double side was put together with the express aim of being both skillful but also able to physically handle Wimbledon (which going by results, they generally could)

  • It's true that Vinnie intimidated United that day. But United stood up to them & won the game with an amazing volley from Cantona! I was lucky enough to be at the game & right behind the goal that he scored in (muscle). Why do people celebrate him kicking Cantona? Cantona was a great player who didn't go around kicking players. I miss the football from the 1990's - 2000's, but talent should also be appreciated, aswell as the physical side of the game.

I actually liked Vinny as a player & don't recall slagging him off. But to seriously compare him to Keane as a player doesn't quite work does it. Vinny was harder than Roy & a better goalkeeper but Roy was head & shoulders above Vinny in every other department.

Ferguson would never have tolerated Keane behaving like a madman during that FA cup game. Utd did not win five titles at that point and were the champions the previous season for the first time in 26 years.

    • They did not crap them self. Ferguson clearly had them drilled to not react to anything. They won that game. Cantona did lose his cool at one moment in that game and tried to stomp Jones. People are reading too much into all those Jones tackles. Ince actually lost his cool once in that game and went charging into Jones only for him to ignore the charge.

  • I take a few things from this video... 1:Man Utd's so-called hard players,Ince,Keane,Cantona were laughably petrified by Wimbledons tackles.Absolutely spineless the lot of them. 2:Vinnie Jones commited about 4 red cards tackles by todays standards. 3:The Utd players reaction to fouls were light years aways from todays over-reaction to the slightests of touches.Paul Parker for instance getting up straight away from a 2 footed Fashanu challenge is particularly impressive.

    • Firstly, they are footballers, not martial arts experts. There’s a big difference between being dirty & hard talking. Vinny Jones was just a thug that was allowed to play football. Other than the FA Cup, I can’t remember what else Wimbledon actually won?? Do you want to compare & contrast that to that Man United team? The first to win the Premiership, the first United team in 26 years to win the league (surpassed by Liverpool with 30+), the team that was the catalyst for Ferguson success… Its not about who is the “hardest” in football, it’s about who wins more than not.

    • @@Coxy_Wrecked You took all the wrong points from the game. Utd won the game and the big thing in the media before the game was how would Utd deal with the hard physical game of Wimbledon. Everybody was expecting Utd to break and for them to start a brawl because they had some nut bags in the team. That was Keane's first season and he played 37 league games with no red cards. The big thing in that game was that Utd did not show any fear to Wimbledon and did not pull out of any tackles or cower from a tackle. If you watch the video again you will see that Cantona lost the cool in one of Jones tackles and actually tried to stomp Jones but that was the only time Utd lost the cool.
