The reaction from the Iran coaches and screams after that last takedown was glorious.
Can you imagine how heartbreaking that must have been for the Iranian wrestler. 12 or 10 seconds away from a gold medal and you got caught. That seems to happen a lot in competitive wrestling matches. Still that's got to be really hard to live down. I know we got a silver medal but he's always going to think about how very close he was and what he could have done to just stall out the last few seconds.
His undoing was his defensiveness. He fought most of the match that way. It almost worked, but being so much on the defensive is risky - your opponent always has the initiative.
@@StudSupreme if I had 12 seconds to go to get a gold medal you wouldn't be able to lay a finger on me. I would be moving away from all contact as much as possible without getting flagged for it.
@@bookaufman9643 Well, think about it - his strategy basically worked until those last 12 seconds. It was a close thing.
20+ years of wrestling, ultimate goal being an Olympic gold medal and he loses it in 15 seconds. On the opposite side tho, 20+ years of wrestling for Taylor, and it all leads to him getting a takedown and winning the gold medal. The feeling of accomplishment he had must have been indescribable

I noticed it was just push outs and relying on his defense. Also, Taylor hit a double leg right off his left side underhook, something Yazdani is known for. That's just adding insult to injury.
He had the right strategy he just messed up, his other two bouts with david taylor he tried to match his aggression, but taylors cardio is much better and yazdani would gas out, this was their closest match to date

The right wrestler won this match. Taylor scored 2 takedowns, while pushing the pace the entire match. Yazdani was totally defensive the entire match. Didn't attempt any takedowns. It would have been terrible to see the gold medal go to someone who's only points were on 3 push outs.
Not even 3 pushouts, only 2. First was from Taylor being put on the clock
2:45 That's a really stupid rule that you can push the opponent out for 1 point, but if he goes down on his knees you won't get any points. That just allow wrestlers to avoid giving up step-out points by dropping down every time instead of actually using technique to defend.
You can see Taylor going on his knees again at 6:02 when Yazdani is about to score another step-out point.

Yazdani is probably the greatest wrestler of our time (Olympic Gold Medalist, 3 time World Cup winner , 3 times World Champion in 3 different weight classes) after Sadulaev but stylistically Taylor always gives him trouble, perhaps the only wrestler to really test him.
