Standup comedian Ari Shaffir sits down with comic Dave Smith for the annual Skeptic Tank Podcast State of The Union Address! This is Dave's seventh or eighth State of The Union Address with me. We take a look at what is happening in America and the world and he breaks it down for me. I'll keep this short since the episode is close to five hours long. Buckle in and enjoy!

  • this year's one is an absolute BEHEMOTH of an episode, Ari is great at just letting Dave go in the right direction. I love it Edit: apart from the war in Kosova stuff, which is complicated, it's a very strong episode. Mass graves have been found after the intervention (Batajnica, Rudnica, etc) and are still being found to this day (Kizevak, etc) and Milosevic was 100% ethnic cleansing, including the building lead-up following Tito's death. This is itself discounting the strategies used to hide bodies outright (trucking out bodies to different locations, burying bodies under construction sites, etc.) so the numbers for that war especially are murky to say the least. Pockets from that entire region still have active live-mine sites that you can't enter. The casualties of war complicate things all over, never mind getting an actual death toll, especially in former Yugoslavia where you have so many "enemy of my enemy is my friend" situations. With respect to what I'm writing here I'm not arguing the morality of any side, I'm just involving the nuance as someone who directly refugee'd from that situation. However I do feel for many innocent Serbian people who didn't want any war themselves and who suffered the effects of American intervention also. The situation in the 90s isn't as simple as Ukraine-Russia is, which itself isn't that simple either. Balkan politics alone is beyond complex to distill to a 3 minute block, let alone the place of Albanians within the Balkans and our relationship to the other countries which comprised Yugoslavia. With that said, the rest of the episode is stellar and a great overview into the entire thing overall and a great look at the establishment's role into all of it. I just had to nit-pick at that section 2nd edit: I'm a Kosovar Albanian who was born in Kosovo and immigrated to the US, for context's sake. God bless America 🇺🇸

  • I'm surprised Ari is so impressed by the Germans. It's like he's congratulating them for being so good at lying to themselves and submitting to someone else's manipulation. Seems the opposite of Ari's usual take on things.

    • I'm giving Ari the benefit of doubt and assume he's just playing a character for Dave's history lesson. The role a high school stoner who keeps asking "where?", when the discussion has been about Ukraine for the last hour.

  • Does Dave’s life revolve around reading headlines on the internet all day? Young people want everything handed to them? I’d love to hear how he’s actually experienced that. As a 40 year old business owner it’s been my experience that 30-55 age range is way more entitled.
