Brake Assembly & Engine Tests | Franna Crane Project | Part 6

We’re continuing on with stage 2 of our Franna crane project! This video is Part 6 in our crane project and we’re progressing on the repairs to underneath the crane. We’ve got pricing to replace the damaged brake assembly but now we need to remove all of the wheels and check what condition the other 3 brake assemblies are in to see what other parts we need. We are also still having issues with the crane intermittently starting and stopping so we do some troubleshooting by compression testing the engine and checking the fuel system! Stay tuned for the next part of our project!

Anger is not productive and will only impede the process. Sometimes I'd have to take a break because I uncovered something the moron before me had butchered. Not long mind you because the job aint getting done on it's own. Before I read this comment I had a quick thought of "at least when he's done he'll have a nice crane he knows is mostly done right (cause he didn't do all of it). You could also look at the crane as a source of future content that diverges some from the traditional offerings of this channel. EDIT : What I've found funny is that the amount of rust/corrosion is reminding me of some of my old cars back in the day. Once I went to do a brake job on a cheap dodge omni I was driving in highschool only to discover that the car was basically rusting in half under the back seat area. Salt in the winter up north in the USA eats cars.

I've known many people who are brilliant at what they do, yet didn't do well in school. Here in the States, major crane companies take pride in their big mobile cranes and are always wiping down and shining their money makers every chance they get. I remember on one job we had a company called Hill Crane operating a Liebherr LTM 1400-7.1 and every time we had some down time between picks the driver (not the operator) would be wiping down the crane, polishing the wheels, etc.

This thing is super weird and I don't think the last owners knew what they were doing when trying to repair it. But I do 100% agree with you it would be a lot safer to upgrade to the new 10-lug style hub and rims. Not only are parts a lot more readily available, but they're also safer to work on. the rims you took off are called widowmaker rims for a reason.

Leaving the nuts on the studs keeps the wedges from flying, striking the wedges/studs with the hammer breaks them loose, but in this way they are retained so they do not cause harm.

  • The heavy corrosion on the brakes is par for the course here in Canada. It's from the road salt they put down in the winter to melt ice. My dad had a trucking company and all the tractors and trailers had the spoke and wedge type hubs. Our wheels never came off as easily as yours did. Much swinging of sledge hammers was needed to get them off. The spacers were a particular nightmare and much time was spent wire brushing the spokes so they would slide off. Out on the road our drivers would loosen the nuts and then drive slowly down the highway for a mile or so to break everything loose. When you have both rust and ice in the hub assembly it gets very difficult to get them apart. Ken

  • Great video. Before disturbing the pump I'd definitely confirm that the power and ground to the stop solenoid are spot on. I.e that neither are intermittent due to bad wiring, there are no voltage drops in the circuit and they can continuously supply enough current etc. I'd then suspect the solenoid sticking. They're relatively cheap, so might just be worth trying a new one. Or on a lot of pumps you can remove the solenoid, take out the plunger, then thread the now plunger-less solenoid back into the pump body. This then obviously robs you of having a working stop solenoid, so you have to stop the engine by other means (stop lever if it has one, stall it, block the air intake or disable fuel supply). It does however allow you to rule out a shit stop solenoid (itself or the electric control of it) as a cause. Looking forward to the next video. Cheers

    • I also had a shudder when Curtis said he wanted to take out engine and pump. I also mailed him to prevent him from taking out engine and pump if he do not read through our comments. However, I was clear she would appreciate Homeless, the Safety Inspector. I sent her a link to an episode with lots of doggo content, recommending she forward through the mech content to get to Homeless. She was delighted and told me it reminded her of good times with her Mom and their canine family. So, second hand appreciation to the CEE crew, especially your four legged inspector.

    • @@dhache1195 I used to drive a Chevy Express 2500 panel van, we carried a quite a lot of weight in them so the rear wheel drive in the snow was not as bad as it could be but when you were on the road in snow it was still easier to goose the throttle just a little to get the backend to slide out when you needed to make a turn. I was quite good at it, a few times I ended up a little past 90 degrees in my turn but I never lost control and ended up sideways. If I just relied on the front wheels for steering I would never have made a successful left turn in heavy snow!

  • Hello Kurtis, you will be amazed when you see that I am watching your KZhead even from Croatia, (European Union). I can tell you that what you are doing now on the brakes does not require changing anything and exposing yourself to unnecessary expenses. I am speaking from my own experience. because I had heavy trucks until retirement, which I repaired myself, and I have experience in that business. I saw that the crane was poorly maintained, but that can all be disassembled and possibly aligned. One brake support is bent, that is, the cam shaft that opens the brake, but that's in your workshop, it's not a problem to do everything! The brake linings are like new, they just need to be cleaned from the corrosion that fell on them from the drum. A little rough sandpaper. What can't be disassembled, heat it with a torch, cool it with water, when you manage to do it all, sandblast everything. In the supports - axis eccentricity, see if the sliding bearings need to be changed? try to measure if there is not too much clearance. I had the same large workshop for repairs, and in order not to buy new axles, I welded them and machined them on a lathe, and sliding bearings can always be found in these dimensions. And you can make them yourself from bronze. The outer seals on the mount may be standard or may just be a rubber "O" ring. Look, the keys for adjusting the brake clearance! If they can be easily turned with a spanner and unscrewed by 360*. It can happen that the worm gear can be damaged. I believe that if you would do it all, the cost would only be your effort and work, and I think you will do it! When you put it all back together, the brakes are adjusted by tightening the key all the way in the drum and returning it by two teeth which is on the ring that you have to squeeze to be able to adjust the brakes! I believe that I have helped you a little so that you do not expose yourself to too much expense, I see that you are a very meticulous craftsman! Many greetings and new challenges from Zlatko from Croatia (Zagreb)

  • "Because I don't have a drift car, I'm going to bling out my crane" had me rollin 😂😂😂 This series is great and because I am cheap, I probably would have reused some of the parts BUT, the logic behind having a crane says "DON'T DO THAT"! A failure at any point with a load in air(flying) is catastrophic and a brief search of "crane failures" on KZhead proves the point. Thank you for reminding me of that. So, "you were right, I was... less right" 😊
