Lyrics:
Spread your wings and prepare to fly
For you have become a butterfly
Oh, fly abandonedly into the sun
If you should return to me
We truly were meant to be
So spread your wings and fly
Butterfly

She let go of my hand & took ahold of The Lords. Momma loves you Kadance,I miss you baby girl. 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋 Edit: today- October 6th was her Birthday. She would've turned 21 years old. Happy birthday in Heaven sweet girl 💖🦋 Momma will always love you.

  • For the young ones who have yet to discover the glory and wonder of Mariah Carey's legendary music catalog. This is why Miley Cyrus shared that BUTTERFLY story in her GRAMMY Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance acceptance speech for FLOWERS. Miley Cyrus is both intelligent and KIND. May she have a career that would scrape the celestial grandeur of the career of each member of The Great Vocal Trinity.

  • Beautiful video. Notice how she was trapped in the house looking on the outside at the horses running free. She wanted that freedom. She held on as long as she could before she broke free and started running like the wild horses. "Wild horses run unbridled or their spirit dies." Her spirit could've died if she stayed with Tommy.

  • A lot of people don't know that Mariah wrote this song wishing this is how Tommy felt about her. This wasn't necessarily how she felt about someone. She was basically singing to herself as Tommy, wishing he felt this way & he'd let her go. She admitted she thought she'd go back to the marriage but it didn't work out.

  • Her voice was so unreal! As a professional singer for 20 years I had people come up to me and tell me how amazing and beautiful my voice was but I could never sing like this. This kind of vocal power is only from God. I am truly amazed when I listen to these old songs. Wow it’s a shame when people get older that others don’t recognize and remember their greatness and only want to point out flaws and all of us age and all of us lose the power and strength we once had in our youth but hopefully we will get to a point where we gain wisdom and we stop putting people down. ♥️

  • So many moments in Mariah’s music are almost impossibly beautiful. Simply put, no one in the game today is producing anything near this level of production in vocals, performance, and musicality of composition and production. The way the bridge builds in this song with the melodic line ascending by half steps, switching from minor to major on certain words like “overtaking me”-like she is climbing steps and unsure of how to fly until she finally does in the incredible run over the first chorus backgrounds. It is such a great pairing of music and lyrics! Not to mention that she has the voice of a Siren, stunning and mesmerizing! There are moments in her music that reach sublime, like the great artists before her. Mariah painted a whole picture with her music. She didn’t only make pop music, she made musical art 🖼️. One of the greatest ever!✨

  • This song is a perfect example of why Mariah Carey was, is and will always be the world's greatest singer... it's not even debatable. The first time I heard the build-up for the climactic slayage my jaw dropped in disbelief! Her glorious tone is legendary, the influence of her mind-boggling riffs and runs are still heard on the radio today and the precision of her vocal acrobatics are until this day unmatched. To call this song iconic would be a gross understatement.

    • I totally disagree, she is the greatest singer ever, she should have won the Best Female Vocalist award of Grammy's more than once. Remember that the Best Female Vocalist award of the Grammys is the equivalent of Best Actress award by the Oscars and the people who vote in both the Grammy's and the Oscars are people from the industry, not just by fans. The musicians who vote in the Grammys know that Mariah is the greatest voice ever dubbed.

  • The way the melody of this song meanders off in the second verse is so brilliant to me because it reinforces the imagery created by the lyrics and vocals. Like something lightly fluttering away. It is impressionistic. Mariah is an 1890s painter re-packaged as a 1990s diva. Though her music is straightforward pop/rnb on its face, it has these subtle qualities that prove she is a real visionary in her field. She has been shortchanged out of getting proper credit for pretty superficial reasons.

  • Mariah Carey said the following about this song: "It was '97 and I was leaving my marriage [to Tommy Mottola]. which encompassed my life. I was writing the song 'Butterfly' wishing that that's what he would say to me. There's a part that goes, 'I have learned that beauty / has to flourish in the light / wild horses run unbridled / or their spirit dies / you have given me the courage / to be all that I can / and I truly feel ...[sings] and I truly feel your heart will lead you back to me when you're ready to land.' At that point I really believed that I was going to go back to the marriage - I didn't think I was going to leave forever. But then the things that happened to me during that time caused me to not go back. Had it been, 'Go be yourself, you've been with me since you were a kid, let's separate for a while,' I probably would've."

  • This song surely hits different as a grown woman now that I’ve experienced the lyrical content in my own life. Wow. There will always be that one person that comes into your life that will you love so deeply but knowing love is a choice, you have to learn how to let the person you love go on and fly into their happiness, while in turn you will hold the warmest memories of them dear to your heart with no regrets while embracing the lessons learned during the time you had them in your life. By divine timing I met a catalyst/twin flame counterpart that I was so spiritually connected to. Meeting him literally changed my life and taught me that I am beautiful, while inspiring me to love myself for who I am and to break free from any fears that once held me back from being the greatest version of myself. I now know anything is possible if I only believe. I wanted nothing more than to be with him and hold on to him forever but ultimately I had to release him and continue my spiritual journey on my own. I’m grateful to my spirit guides for bringing him into my life, if only for a season, I will cherish every moment I had with him and release him to the universe to spread his wings and fly.

    • Literally what I’m going through now. It was a one sided thing, but I’m realizing he was a catalyst for me to love myself more. Although the pain of letting him go hurts so much, I truly believe he has already returned to me. I just needed him to show me how to love myself first.

    • @@dejanae7336 my experience and journey is real and no one can convince me otherwise. It’s not limerence, maybe what you experienced was limerence but don’t put your convictions on me because we are different people with different experiences. Just because you don’t believe in the twin flame dynamic doesn’t make it any less real. The purpose of the twin flame dynamic is to bring you closer to God/The Divine, to be spiritually awakened to your higher self, so you can serve your true purpose on this earth and that’s exactly what it’s done for me. Twin flame isn’t always purposed for Union either. Once people get that through their head then we can talk.

      @Hi.Shadow@Hi.Shadow3 ай бұрын
    • @@Hi.Shadow I was obsessed with twin flames for years and realized/woke up that shit ain’t feel like God at all. Felt like the devil made that shit up to only take you away from the truth. The Bible. & people wanna make an excuse for sleeping with somebody who’s married /in a relationship Lol. A lot of people who think they’re “twin flames” are delusional & hopeless romantics. Hanging on to the last bit of hope they have for life/love when God has been there all along to guide you to true love. No one is above him. GOD will never send you “the one” and they’re entirely unavailable in every way. Now can he make you aware of this person, sure. That’s it. People start to lose morals over this concept and can’t control themselves. It’s just weird. All of it. If you look up twin flame stories, most of them sound like horny people who fell in love with someone in a relationship/married and sad they person won’t leave their spouse. It’s so messed up. . .which is what the devil wants. Ruined marriages. Some marriage however are beyond repair but that’s another topic. 😅 anyway, blessings.

  • This song is about letting someone go even when you love them so dearly if that's the only way for them to be happy. It's not an easy thing to do thus she sings "blindly I imagine I could keep you under glass" she wants to be selfish and keep that person with her but she knows she's not part of that happiness anymore. I just realized that this song is very selfless. I was so focused on the literal meaning that I forgot that the butterfly in this song is a metaphor.

  • I want this song to be played at my funeral when the time comes. I have also dedicated this song to my dogs Lenox (10/28/05 - 7/7/22) and Lexi (4/5/06 - 2/2/22) who recently passed away 😢.

  • One thing I love most about this record, was how personal it was coming from her. Notice how she starts the song unlike many others, in her low register. Simply beautiful, you know while recording this, was coming straight from the heart/emotions!! Then it ends with her POWER vocals, her soul is flying in the music as well!!!!!

  • I think I was 9 around the time Dreamlover came out. The first time I heard her I was standing in line at 6 flags, waiting to ride the log flume, and they had Dreamlover playing over the speakers. She sounded like an angel. Even now, Butterfly is one of my favorite songs. It brings me to tears every time. 90s Mariah spoke for so many people who were struggling with being different. I hope she has a fulfilling life in and outside of music.

  • You guys need to interpret the metaphors that represent the horse and the song lyric "butterfly". When she wrote this song she was coming out of her marriage with Tommy Mottola who controlled her music career during their marriage. Once she divorced she felt free again..hence at the beginning the horse running around in a circle and towards the middle of the song, the horse jumps and is free. So the horse represents the freedom that MC was yearning for so long. there.

  • I was a 13-year-old in the summer of 1997 when the videos of the Butterfly album came out. That was when I started to pay extra attention to Mariah Carey. I will always like Butterfly because the video symbolizes breaking out and finding freedom when you feel trapped. I felt seriously trapped socially at that time because at that age, others at school were always finding excuses to spread rumors about me, and my parents were, to a degree, "parenting too much." It was extremely difficult for me to trust anyone, because society would not allow me to be myself. Things improved during high school, but after graduation, I've only been able to keep in touch with friends online, and it doesn't provide me that same type of feeling that I had during those years. I feel emotional about this video because while my life has improved since then, I still feel socially trapped because it's hard being a 35-year-old single in a world where(from my experience, anyway) seemingly every woman is already with someone, and those who aren't with someone either don't care or they seem to have a desperate mentality. Because of what my life has gone through socially, I will always consider this my favorite music video of all time.

I need ver had that chance for independence, my parents babied me my whole life so I always rely on them for everything, I quit uni after 5 months because of no social life and I’m shit at learning. Life sucks

  • It's 2021: I've belted this song out in pain, hurt, resentment, regret, humility & releasement more than i care to say. It gave me a chance to yell, cry, sing, release & be free to finally calm down...all covered up in song & rhythm. Listen...you won't always understand other people's pain completely...but when you see & hear theirs you surely can feel & relate. Thank you Mariah my dear... thank you for helping me get some of this pain out of my heart, mind & soul💜🦋
