Restoration & Repair of Xbox 360 with Red Ring of Death
Restoring and repairing Xbox 360 with red ring of death and stuck disc drive. I got this Xbox as part of broken console lot from Ebay with some Playstations.
I started by checking the error code the console gives. Mine is 1023, which is almost always related to a cold solder in CPU or GPU. The disc drive is also not working. I can hear it trying to open but I doesn't.
To repair the red ring of death I used a heat gun. My heat gun is part of a soldering station but you can use a normal one also. Mine was set up to 400 degrees Celsius. The idea is to heat up the CPU and GPU until the solders underneath melt. The chips can be damaged by heat also so it's important to move the heat gun around. The board is pretty much ruined and not if you can't fix it, so you are not losing anything if you try this and fail. After the initial warm up I added flux which will help the reflow of the solder joints. During heating adding the flux you don't want to touch anything on the board because the solder should start melting and your parts can come off of the board and it can be very hard or impossible to put them back. After heating the CPU and GPU for a while I let the beard cool down before I touch it. Now the board is hopefully working. if not you can try again if you want.
I could hear that the disc drive was trying to open so I figured it was probably just filled with dust. I tested it and the motor which spins the disc didn't move up and down as it should. This prevented the drive from opening. I removed the covers from the drive and cleaned it. After cleaning the disc drive was working well.

This console managed to have 2 errors at the same time, 0102 (GPU/CPU cracked solder) was shown in the video, but you can tell 1023 (No DVD) was also happening due to the flashing power button. I'm glad he managed to fix both.

It’s like if DKOldies actually fixed any of their “refurbished” products.
This just goes to show that real repairs take time, knowledge, and some love and care. Also following the steps in the right order and not skipping any of them. Really really great work!
Yes, and the reality is that every repair has to be balanced against the price of replacement. Higher cost of living means more expensive workers and fewer things that can be fixed economically.

I love the way you handle the xbox, keep up the good work 💯
Really glad to see that console repaired. I used to think the RROD was a done deal when it happens.
Feels like the scene where the old man fixes woody's arm. Fixing an old good friend :")

You just fixed my xbox issue with the codes at the beginning. You’re a g
I just restored one that a friend of mine gave me which was in subpar condition, this probably got recommended to me because i searched how to tear a 360 apart and i just cant stop staring at the result and how beautiful the console is all cleaned up.
I've never been this drawn into a restoration video. I still use my Xbox 360 that I've had for 15 years now and it's only ringed once, and now I see what's inside my beloved console. It's really nice to see someone taking such care and precautionary measures with a cleaning, especially with this specific console. Thanks for showing me this ♥️
same
Same here, but mine's still going strong with no rings. I tend to play the one a bit more than the 360, but it's still loads of fun.
@@doomguy974 My Xbox 360 is even older than the one in the video, and still looks like new, and works flawlessly.
same but idk how to get the ring of death like its just sitting in my parents room
My 360 is still going strong, it only Red Ringed once. Although, I have to beat it's meat sometimes to get disc rolling, but otherwise it works like a charm. 🤣
This is super satisfying in many ways personally. 1. Less electronic waste. 2. You resurrected a life companion kinda like making a dead dog into a new born puppy. 3. Brain tingles just watching you work!. 4. Thank you for this.
I've owned a ps2, ps3 xbox one, xbox one S and series S, I can't understand how the consoles you repair are so banged up and dirty, it truly boggles my mind.
The fact you use RDR to test if it loads games makes me happy
Same. I wondering what he was gonna test on it. I wished it wasn’t some generic shooter and wished it was RDR1… and he did, to my surprise!
