LaStarza vs. Layne reminds me of watching two midwest club fighters fighting a 4 rounder on an old ESPN card from Muncie, In. Two guys who were not well schooled, standing in front of each other acting like they were insulted if the other guy missed them with a punch. A lot of right hand leads, a lot of jabs with the rear foot leaving the canvas, little/no counter punching, just two guys willing to get hit but showing little boxing skill. Look how bad Rex Layne swings and misses. What an oaf, and this is the best little Rocky's little era had to offer smh. These guys aren't topnotch professionals, more like good Golden Glove boxers. What's everyone waiting for? I know everyone's seen bits of LaStarza vs. Rocky and bits of Layne vs. Rocky, why not really see Layne and LaStarza in action? A really genuine guy and a hero to many, Archie Moore is a beloved icon who deserves respect. RIP Archie you are still loved and remembered.

For me, my all-time greatest boxer has got to be the one and only "Ageless" "Old Mongoose”, Archie Moore. His record of 186-23-10 (131 KO's) boasts the most knockouts by any single fighter in boxing history. Moore fought in Mexico, the Philippines, Italy, Canada, Brazil, Germany, Great Britain, Argentina, Uruguay, Panama and Australia.

Archie Moore's turn finally arrived in 1952 when he was a veteran of, at a conservative estimate, 170 contests. He had enlisted the help of leading writers to campaign on his behalf. The world light heavyweight champion, Joey Maxim, was an Italian-American whose real name was Giuseppe Antonio Berardinelli. Maxim's manager, Jack "Doc" Kearns, who had managed the great 1920s heavyweight Jack Dempsey, insisted on Maxim being paid $100,000 in return for allowing the fight to go ahead in St Louis. Moore took what was left, which turned out to be $800. By the time he had paid off his sparring partners and other pre-fight expenses, there was nothing left. Nevertheless, he won the world light heavyweight title at the age of 39. After the decision, he walked over to Maxim, but was brushed aside by Kearns. "Never mind the condolences, kid," said the old man. "We've got all the money." More than that, Kearns had threatened to pull Maxim out of the fight unless Moore cut him in as his co-manager. Moore had signed - and then discovered Kearns had also negotiated a rematch clause. As a result, Moore had to beat Maxim twice more. Kearns earned a fortune.

that's exactly what I was going to say.. fighters now days are protected better than those old school fighters who ended up broke and punch drunk.. but to see this fight and the heart that Archie had was something to see..

@@jimmynich4791 In theory low-power Ezzard really didn't need to fight Louis or Marciano bcz Ezzard had already established himself for the Hall of Fame by beating Archie Moore 3 times long before he beat Louis and lost to Rocky. Overall it was great Light heavyweight division but Horseshirt Heavyweight division
@Stout_Krout_Columbia_MD Yeah but I'm not talking about Charles as a heavyweight and I didn't say size doesn't matter, I said Charles is the greatest light heavyweight of all time, in my very humble opinion. Charles didn't need to move up to heavyweight to cement his legacy, he's not the light heavyweight goat just because of his 3 wins vs Moore. He had wins over guys like Chalie Burley, Gus Lesnevich, Joey Maxim, Jimmy Bivins, Elmer Ray, a lot of them multiple times, when the murderer's row fighters were being avoided by the white fighters (fault of the promoters) they were being outclassed by Charles. His light heavyweight résumé was insane, even for the time when boxers had hundreds of fights. I don't care about his 42% ko ratio, he fought a high % of his fights vs killers, unfortunately he killed a guy in the ring himself which probably didn't help his ko percentage afterwards & let's not forget he was smaller than light heavyweight to begin with, he was actually a welter just before turning pro and he was a featherweight long before that. Remarkable fighter, all things considered he's the only guy to go 15 rounds with Rocky and he beat Joe Louis, old Joe Louis but still.

The great Archie Moore, and that dang sneaky left hook of his; which he could throw in rapid succession, right behind a jab with the same hand! That, in and of itself was amazing... ...until you realized that a right hook was coming behind it! Amazing fighter and human being!
Those 4 Hall of Famers Marciano faced were not prime when they fought him, it's scientifically and mathematically impossible when evaluating their careers. They already had 409 (68 68 95 178) pro fights and that doesn't include Louis' 96 fights he had before 2 million soldiers during his 4 year military service. The decathlon is the ultimate and/or best test for speed strength endurance. The oldest any Olympic or World Champion has ever been is 32 (Roman Sebrle). This would leave one to believe that after 32 athletes will have started to decline- if not earlier. Boxers are only measured against their opponents, and the best boxers Marciano fought were undoubtedly past their prime. Marciano quit at 31 for a reason. A fighter is in his prime when he has the maturity and experience to go along with undiminished reflexes. Once his reflexes start to slide he's past-prime, simple as that. When his reflexes are gone he's a shot fighter. I can't recall seeing a fighter older than his early thirty's that still had his reflexes fully intact.

Must we forget little 5' 9" Yvonne Durrell was career Welterweight turned Middleweight. This fight was in 1958, Durrell weighed 172 and Moore weighed 173. Durrell lost 24 times and was KO'd 9 times. Directly after this fight Durrell went back to fighting debut amateurs. At best Durrell was C-LEVEL undercard boxer.

Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward said, *"Marciano was too small. He really wasn't a Heavyweight. 5' 10", exceptionally short arms, very clumsy, cut easy, had troubled balance. 188 lbs was just too small."* Emanuel was simply stating 'Facts'. With what we know today, since 1979, Rocky isn't even an authentic Heavyweight not to mention 224+lbs Super Heavyweight. @@Stout_Krout_German It's unfair to compare weights from different eras. Fighters today are jacked up on supplements and PEDs. A good example would be Evander Holyfield. If he was fighting back during Marciano's time he would be similar in size to Ezzard Charles. At age 22 he weighed 178 lbs. Joe Louis at 22 weighed 203. Muhammad Ali at 22 defended his title against Liston weighing 206. Before the war interrupted his career, Louis peaked at 208. Before Ali was stripped of his title, he peaked at 214. Holyfield on the other hand added 35 pounds of pure muscle, which is not natural.

I remember this fight like yesterday, I was 13 years old and watching on an old B/W TV. The fight was broadcast on the old Wednesday night fight program. I was a big Archie Moore fan and caught all his fights whenever he was on. He gave Marciano all he could handle until being knocked out in the 9th round.

That was superhuman. I remember putting on the boxing gloves when I was a kid and fooling around in the yard. After I few minutes I could hardly hold my arms up. These guys went on for a dozen rounds throwing haymakers landing punch after punch. Those guys were tough as nails.

How inspirational was that? The guy was was amazing. Nobody knew his age. No record of it. He was probably a lot older. He was prevented from rising up in the ranks when he was younger, not for lack of ability. Stood in George Foreman’s corner. Ali stayed in Archie’s training camp for a short while when Ali was a kid. Archie gave Ali a broom to sweep floors to humble him. Ali left as one might expect. Prime Ali beat Archie when Archie was elderly. Elder Archie knocked down Marciano in the second round in 1955, but Marciano came back. Archie Moore was far, far more than a boxer. A very intelligent, wise man who understood the power of the mind, endurance and hard work.

Must we forget little 5' 9" Yvonne Durrell was career Welterweight turned Middleweight. This fight was in 1958, Durrell weighed 172 and Moore weighed 173. Durrell lost 24 times and was KO'd 9 times. Directly after this fight Durrell went back to fighting debut amateurs. At best Durrell was C-LEVEL undercard boxer.

Hall of Fame Heavyweight Champion Sonny Liston was a muscular 6′ 1″ powerhouse weighing 220 lbs of pure brick. He had iron in either fist and could put an opponent on the mat quickly with either. Sonny was the most ducked fighter of all time. Even Joe Frazier’s team refused to fight him. Liston in his prime was the real deal. He was a great fighter.

37 year old Joe Louis had already been fighting *"17 years"* with *(68)* fights and *(96)* fights before two million soldiers during his 4 year military service before facing Marciano. *Louis' speed and punching power had all but evaporated evidenced by him scoring only 2 KO's in his last 12 fights!* Louis was a sitting duck. By contrast, 184 lb Rocky was just entering his prime. 40 year old cruiserweight Walcott had already been fighting *"22 years"* with *(68)* fights before facing tiny cruiser Rocky. Walcott had an abysmal 44% KO's. Walcott being granted (6) title attempts in a (5 ½) year span (1947 to 1953) proves how shallow the division was. *And (5) of his title opportunities came immediately after a loss!* This is important. *Giant Abe Simon put Walcott into retirement for 4 years 4 months (1940 to 1944). The decathlon is the ultimate test for speed/strength/endurance. The oldest any Olympic or World champion has ever been is 32 (Roman Sebrle). This would leave one to believe that after 32 athletes will have started to decline- if not earlier. Boxers are only measured against their opponents, and the best boxers Marciano fought were past their prime. Marciano quit at 31 for a reason. A fighter is in his prime when he has the maturity and experience to go along with undiminished reflexes. Once his reflexes start to slide he's past-prime, simple as that. When his reflexes are gone he's a shot fighter. I can't recall seeing a fighter older than his early thirties that still had his reflexes fully intact. Joe Louis' prime years were in 1937, 1938, 1939 when he was 23, 24, 25 years of age. Ali's best years were during his twenties. Mike Tyson's best years was in his early twenties. Yet for some unknown reason Rocky fans believe Walcott's and Moore's best years were in their forties. Marciano quit at 31 for a reason.

Archie was the best Heavyweight to ever live. That is not to say he was the greatest but the most skilled. He had the left hook, the jab, the right and phenomenal defense. His skill allowed him to fight way past his prime.
Moore weighed 173 lbs in this fight, how is that Heavyweight? Moore was Light heavy champ from 1952 to 1962, how is that Heavyweight? Moore weighed 148 lbs vs. Kid Pocahuntas who also weighed 148, how is that Heavyweight? Moore was entered into the Hall of Fame for what he accomplished at Light heavyweight, Not Heavyweight!

I had the pleasure of meeting Archie Moore in the lobby of a hotel in San Diego back in 1995. Not only was he a gentleman and actually looked me in the eye to make human contact, rare today, when I reached out to shake his hand he fist bumped me. That was the first fist bump handshake I had ever experienced. To this day I believe Archie invented it! 😂

Even though ranking bodies exclude "WEIGHT" from their metric, they STILL ACKNOWLEDGE (18) EIGHTEEN DIFFERENT WEIGHT CLASSES, imagine that? 'AGE' is another code omitted from the metric. Algorithms cannot see Moore was at least 42 and Walcott was at least 40. Algorithms cannot see Charles and Moore were technically light heavyweights and Joe Louis' once speedy reflexes were now non-existent. LaStarza vs. Layne reminds me of watching two midwest club fighters fighting a 4 rounder on an old ESPN card from Muncie, In. Two guys who were not well schooled, standing in front of each other acting like they were insulted if the other guy missed them with a punch. A lot of right hand leads, a lot of jabs with the rear foot leaving the canvas, little/no counter punching, just two guys willing to get hit but showing little boxing skill. Happens on occasion that a fighter has his opponent very nearly beaten early on but that fighter survives and comes back strong and it seems as if the expectation that he thought he had the fight won but didn’t causes the spirit of the first fighter to collapse!

You don't know what your talking about. Durrell was the hand picked career Middleweight bummy loser. Today's light heavyweights Beterbiev and Bivol would smash both these guys within seconds.
Little Rocky's style will play into Liston’s Giant hands, as it will violate one of boxing’s holy grail rules and that is, “never slug with a bigger slugger.” Especially when that slugger’s name is Sonny Liston; simply put Liston does it all better than Rocky and also has height weight and major reach advantage. I can see Liston’s jab being an even more formidable weapon than usual in this matchup as he won’t have to go looking for Rocky. To put the concept of reach into perspective, you have Liston with a monster 84” reach compared to little Rocky's 67” reach- this would be decisive. I would favour Liston in a big way. Marciano gets flattened faster than Patterson!

Marciano’s style was tailor made for Liston. Sonny's power and reach would have been too much for the plodding face first style of Marciano. Rocky would get knocked into tomorrow before he could get close enough to land any damaging shots of his own. Little 184 lb Rocky was never tested against a real genuine prime topnotch 200+lbs Heavyweight let alone an authentic prime topnotch Super Heavyweight. In comparison Mike Tyson weighed 220 and was 3x faster.

almost no combinations - these guys were blowing single jabs and hooks, I also saw an uppercut here an there. But imh opinion neither boxer was great, really
Moore was trying to recover from a devastating start. That meant taking fewer risks, avoiding being exposed by throwing meaningless combinations. Greatness is not always measured by how attractive he is to the public, but by the resilience and heart he demonstrated. Archie Moore faced more real challenges than Canelo, Mayweather and Paquiao combined. If he wasn't great, I don't know who could be.
