  • After watching all the KZhead videos of the actors and director and reading the reviews, I got up the courage to watch this movie. One of the hardest things I've ever done. Why? Because I had my own Oliver back in 1969-72. We were in college, met through mutual friends in my rooming house one block from campus and quickly became good friends, then it developed into more than just friends. I was Elio, 5' 10", dark hair, and yes, just like the movie, I played piano with my Jewish heritage. My Oliver was 6' 3", fair, muscular and athletic. When I first met Jim, OMG, he about took my breath away. I thought this guy is not your average joe blow. He was exceptional with an air of confidence, strength, joy and peace with contagious charisma. I was immediately drawn to him and captivated by his persona. As the weeks progressed that first semester, we saw each other more and more. Jim was coming over to our rooming house more and more to see his old friends but it didnt take me long to figure out he wasn't just coming to see them. We would catch a glimpse of each other from a distance on campus and immediately be drawn to together, our eyes glued in a conversation we really didn't have time for but didn't want to end. In those early days our chemistry was being kindled and ignited. I found myself continually thinking about him. Little did we know or understand where this relationship was taking us. I really had no idea Jim was gay. I thought he was too manly to be gay. But he asked me to go home one weekend and meet his mother. His Dad had died from a heart attack. Jim said we could just sleep in his bed. I think he planned that. That night we found out what our relationship was all about and that love was at the center of it. It didn't take long for the shorts to come off. I thought my heart would leap out of my chest. There we were like two blades of grass twisting and turning. I was a bit naive, so deferred to Jim's lead. He knew what to do, how to do it and when to do it. He put me at complete ease with his gentle, kind, yet passionate love. What Elio and Oliver experienced for 3 months, Jim and I experienced for almost 3 years. It may not have been Crema, Italy but even on the plains of Emporia, Kansas like it was for us, when love is at the center of it, anywhere becomes "Crema!" Jim and I took love and life to another level. Our "Monet's Berm" was the whole night in the grass on our sleeping bags behind my rooming house. I don't think we slept 10 minutes that whole night. I remember it like yesterday. We played and studied together, we laughed, we were devoted, committed, and passionate. And just like Elio and Oliver, we ran around town together having the time of our lives! On our summer breaks we wrote long letters to each other, spending our treasured weekends together. We had to live under the radar. We took every opportunity to be alone, take a ski trip to the mountains of Colorado, take a train trip or visit family. Even our friends did not know what was really going on between us. How well I remember just the two of us driving down the highway, hanging on and loving each other. Jim would have one hand on the steering wheel, the other hand all over me or under my clothes. I have never known someone so strong, yet so kind, caring and mature. Jim was so stable, nothing ever rattled him. He was confident but not arrogant. We never fought or argued. We truly respected and supported each other. We esteemed the other so highly that I loved his sports and he loved my music. We were obsessed with each other in an amazing bond. We never talked about being gay, we just LIVED it. Neither did we talk about what would happen when we graduated, though inwardly, we knew. And so, the end came as quickly as it started. What should have been an exciting graduation day was anything but that. We had to remain stoic and composed around family and friends. The culture and prejudice of the day were stacked against us. When reality set in, I felt like I died a thousand deaths. My heart was broken, hurt and in pain for a long time. We had no cell phones, no internet, no social media and no one I could turn to for trust and support. I cried myself to sleep many a night or didn't sleep at all. I had night dreams for years of "Oliver" that were so real, I would wake up thinking he was back, only to realize he was NEVER coming back. Life was a struggle. Jim was stationed overseas for four years in the military. I buried myself in higher education, my faith and a new family. We went our separate ways 49 years ago. We have seen each other twice in 49 years. Every year without fail we send a Christmas card and note to each other. We each have married with children and grandchildren. We live 8 hours from each other. Those are the lost years of our lives, that seem like yesterday. The flames of our love has never, ever died. Love is eternal. The last time "Oliver " and I saw each other was 27 years ago! We started texting in 2019 after I received an unexpected phone call from Jim. So, for me, watching CMBYN was very painful. It stirred up a whole set of emotions in me that had been lying dormant for a long time. I know exactly what it was like for Elio to look into the flames of that fire with tears rolling down his face....pain, no words can describe, struggling to live one day at a time. Uncannily, I will revisit scenes from CMBYN. The visual is a stark reminder of exactly what Jim and I experienced, not just the sexual part but every emotion of living the love and union of two souls molded as one... **UPDATE:8/29/20, Due to Covid19 and widespread restrictions, Jim and I will have to postpone any meeting in 2020. We now are slated to meet September 2021! HERE IS THE UPDATE YOU HAVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR!! 8/31/21-- Jim arrived on time to my house on August 29 with his wife. Our wives really connected and enjoyed the visit. I was surprised how much Jim had aged in 27 years. He is 73 and in good health. He just has some nerve pain in his legs. Though he looked much different, underneath he was the same fun loving Jim from our college days. We shared and looked at dozens of pictures, laughed and ate a lot of good food. It was a very memorable and joyful time together with many hugs and friendly touching. It was like we had never been apart. Our personalities were the same as they were 49 years ago. I wish I could share the pictures we took together. I will savor them in my Jim & Phil album. We plan to make this a yearly get together. This is the best we could hope for in spite of the years that have kept us apart. I am thankful we both are still alive, enjoying life and still have much commonality. My thanks to all of you who have prayed and spoken kind words of support over us. Love is the greatest gift God has given us!❤❣ Life is short, make the MOST of it! There are friendships and love that are for life!! I wrote this poem after watching the movie, dedicated to my Oliver/Jim, the lost love of my life.❤ CALL ME BY YOUR NAME Crema called two hearts unknown Oliver and Elio to summer’s glow. Gazing from the window below To one that walked into my soul. Did you just see that look to me, Was it meant what I think it to be? Hearts bounced and jumped to see, Was he thinking and wondering just about me? Laughing, talking, plucking the keys Grass, meadows, lying down in the breeze. Looking, touching, our hearts twisted and turned Bending, caressing as blades on the earth. The road was long and open to flee, Will I catch him as I pedaled with passionate speed? O Crema you called two hearts meant to be Locked in time, stood still with love’s purity. Call me by your name and I’ll call you by mine, To be joined in body and united as one, Risen together to life’s drum, Will it last til the end of sum? Tears fall to the soil, endlessly Breaking the soul of what was to be. It lasted for as long as we pressed in to see How hungry we were to be free. Summer’s end came with speed, As we ran the streets jumping to flee. We tried to pull on our destiny Only to be beaten by time and disbelief. A father who cared enough to speak Listened to a heart pouring out its grief. Giving his love to a son’s defeat Wisdom that gave this Elio relief. He left with a trace of who he was, My heart ached and torn for his grip on me. The fire brought warmth and comfort in need, The flames of love lost in eternity. © Phil Shuster 2020

    • @@jimparsons4312 Thankyou! It will be an anxiously, anticipated meeting. We live 8 hours from each other. After college our pathes took such different directions. Like Elio in the book, I could have easily gone the music route because I had many years of piano and trombone but opted for healthcare. After college, "Oliver" went into the Air Force and ended up in retail sales. I went into the Army Medical Corps and ended up in the private sector as an anesthesia practitioner. Interestingly, we send a Christmas card and family type letter to each other every year. CMBYN, has resurrected a whole host of emotions inside of me. I know exactly what it was like for Elio to look into that fire with tears in his eyes. Love is an eternal flame that never, ever dies!

    • Brown It was never easy. I am happy for us both even though our situation was less than ideal to go our separate ways. We have our families, children and grandchildren. It would have been easy to have spent the rest of my life with my "Oliver" but the times in which we lived in very conservative midwest U.S. made it almost impossible to maintain a gay relationship. At least I know where Jim lives and have had some contact over the years. There is a hole in my heart to this day and I know the one and only person who can fill that emptiness...."Oliver."

  • I love how confidently Oliver asks "do you know how happy I am that we slept together?" with the lady behind him in full earshot. Such a change from the scene where Elio confesses and he says "we can't talk about those kinds of things." Oliver had fallen for Elio by this point. He wasn't asking to charm or reassure a 17 year old after his first time, he really was so happy that they had slept together.

    • 1: Because Luca is a genius. 2: Because Chalamet is one of the greatest actors of all time. 3: because their combined natal astrology is that of a couple who are deeply in love, and are likely to be for life !!!!! 4: Maybe, just maybe, because Chalamet fell desperately in love with Armie (just as Luca intended ???!!!) and maybe the most challenging part for Armie, was not showing how terrifyingly close he was to completely falling for Timmy. If he had not got children he may not have been so coy. 5: Bottom line (no pun intended) Luca gave us all the ride of our lives, and I for one am eternally grateful. Special mention and sincere gratitude to Elizabeth, she must have suffered and paid perhaps more than anyone for the creation of this incredible work of art, may she be rewarded.

  • The whole point of this scene is to show how vulnerable and needy Elio is, and at the same time to show how caring Oliver is -- and respectful of Elio's feelings. It works so well precisely because these issues remain unstated; they're merely demonstrated by what the characters say and do. It's a short scene, but it was vital to the success of the film for something like this to happen.

    • It's hard to say which one is better as they are both quite different and each has its pros and cons. We might could say the book is better in that you are actually fully in Elio's head space when everything is going on (the book is actually presented as a reflection upon past events and not details of ongoing events). And let me tell you, this boy's thoughts fly at top speed all … the … time! It's part of what makes him so endearing. The book also has the benefit of what is essentially an extensive epilogue, where you get to see a few significant interactions between Elio and Oliver later on. I wouldn't say the conclusion is fully satisfying. It's powerful, for sure, and it does imply very strongly that Elio and Oliver _do_ actually end up together after so many years apart (like this line from Oliver to Elio: "I'm like you," he said, "I remember everything." as well as the exchanges between them then), but I wanted it to be made explicit so my heart can rest in peace.

That shared look!😎 You could almost here Elio gasp!..sexual chemistry!...chemistry in itself is hard to have specially on screen! ..but sensuality In itself it's rare to see on screen!!

  • I too had my own Oliver, with the exception that our story was heterosexual. But that’s how you know this movie works. It’s a love story, and love is transcendental. My Oliver was 6ft5, blonde, and blue eyed, (not unlike Mr. Hammer) so it kind of struck me hard. We have known each other since the 9th grade, and he got shipped off to boarding school and would come home for the summer. We would meet up and hang out, just talking and being goofy, every summer. One day he called me to chat, and I asked him “Say something that would shock me. I feel like I’m always doing all the talking.” There was a pause, and then he very quietly said “I love you. I have always loved you.” We met up later that afternoon, and for the first time he kissed me. I will never forget how soft his lips were or how delicate that kiss was. Ever. Right after he said to me again “I love you.” I don’t remember never not wanting to kiss him or ever wanting to stop. On his last day of his summer visit, hours before he was to leave, we made love for the first time. And it was just as passionate as his kiss. The next summer he came home and we finally became a couple. And it was perfect. One night I asked him how he lost his virginity, and he told me “...at your house.” I didn’t know until that moment. A few months had passed and he started to distance himself. Loooong story short, he got scared. We didn’t talk for three months, got back together, and two weeks back into our relationship, he joined the Navy. (So the line “I don’t want you to go” hits me hard too.) When he came home from basic, he blew me off again, and with the support of his family, they invited me to their home so I could confront him. Once again, it came down to fear. We were through, he went back to the Navy, and I was devastated. About a year had passed, (he was stationed in San Diego,) and his family invited me to a barbecue at their home. And as luck would have it, he called. I remember sitting in their backyard, and he told me he was getting married. My heart sank. I had to be the bigger person, and congratulated him. Even though I felt so betrayed by his fear, and his doubt, I loved him. Years passed, they divorced. And he ended up coming home. We intended to meet up, but it never happened. I moved away, and we keep in touch via social media. He’s remarried, and is happy. He sent me a message telling me his step-daughter was going to homecoming and he told her “Is this the boy you want to tell your friends about in 10 years? Is this the first kiss you want to remember. I told her about mine, and no regrets.” I was in tears. I have no doubt in my mind that he was the one. He was always the one. But fear, inexperience, timing, it never was on our side. That was cathartic.

    • Your story mirrors my Oliver story, except we were a gay couple and instead of 3 months our relationship lasted short of 3 years when we were in college. As we went our separate ways, we both eventually married, had children and grandchildren. All this was 47 years ago and there is still a void in my heart for "my Oliver." We have seen each other twice in 47 years, the last time was 25 years ago. Thanks to social media we plan to meet this year, 2020. My heart does go out to you for all that you suffered. What "Oliver" and I experienced doesn't even come close to my life today. Our love was so deep, it was meant for eternity. But like you, the time of 1970, the social pressures of conservative America, there was no way a gay union could survive. The after math was devastating with hurt, pain, loss and depression. In time I healed, but still had vivid dreams about us for many years and even decades. 🙏

    • @@philshuster7463 I read your story, and it inspired me to share mine. It hurts when you try to fill that void. When you find love with someone else, it's not the same. Sure it's a good love, and one you can be happy with. But it's not the same love you had with him. It's not as satisfying or makes you feel whole. When you were with him, you felt complete didn't you? When you heard his voice, or saw his smile you knew that was home. Just being near him was happiness. I remember how uncomplicated our love was. It was so natural, like opening your eyes, or exhaling. He always made me laugh. Even when we do get a chance to talk, he still does. And it hurts. My heart is aching just thinking about all the idiosyncrasies that made us whole. I'm so sorry if my words are broken and don't flow. But I'm sure you'll understand it's hard to maintain a single thought when a million memories come flooding back. Now as for you, I wish you all the happiness with your reunion with your Oliver. I hope the pause on the planet doesn't stagger anymore waiting for you or for him. I think 47 years is long enough. Please feel free to send updates. I am hoping someone finally gets a happy ending.

    • @@lucyfire27 It was the most wholesome thing I have ever experienced in my life. We esteemed the other more highly than ourself. All we wanted was to please the other. It taught me a lot about selfless love. Love can be selfish but that was not even in the mix for Jim and I. The beginning of the end for us, was when Jim wanted a hetero relationship with a mutual friend of ours. I was shocked and hurt at first but I understood he realized that we as a gay couple could not survive in that era. Jim was an identical twin. The brother was John but for me, it was easy to tell them apart. Their personalities were so different, to me like night and day. Not that John wasn't a nice guy, he just wasn't "my Oliver." Then John married a good friend of mine in college. I haven't seen them in 48 years. I savor those years and the memories of the innocence we experienced. I am so grateful to social media like KZhead to allow me to open up to the "world" in a way I have never been able to do before. What a supportive, caring audience.

      @philshuster7463@philshuster74634 жыл бұрын
    • @@philshuster7463 There are different types of love. Your love for your family is not the same as romantic love (let's hope so!!!) The loss of a family member or friend is painful, that is true. The loss of romantic love is a different pain. Loss of family or friends is devastating, and I'm not reducing that pain in any way, as we have all lost someone. But since we're talking about romantic love, that's what I'll delve into. When you lose romantic love, that void can be filled by artifical love, and it's so damaging. Because not only are you hurting yourself, you're bringing an unknowing, innocent person into the mix who has no idea what's going on, and the effects of that snowball out of control. Too many people get hurt, and it's so unfair to all parties. I'm not judging, because I have filled a void with another person. It ended badly, naturally. Romantic love is rare. It's impossible to obtain because you cannot find it. It finds you. And when it happens, all of those cheesy cliches become true. The stars align, all the songs are about them, you smile more, and you're lost in thoughts of their memory, or of what's to come. And when that love disappears be it by force or by choice, all of the sad cliches become true. Everything is dark, your smile disappears, and all the songs become about them. You are lost in thought of their memory and what could've been. And all you want to do is talk to your best friend and tell them you are hurting, your heart aches, the pain is unbearable, and all you want is their comfort. This never happens because they are the reason for all of the pain that exists in your heart, your body, your soul. They too have to distance themselves to go through their experiences and their pain. Enduring the same pain separately is what devastates us the most of all. Filling the void with "artificial" love is never the answer. It won't solve your problem, it just creates a distraction from your heart and soul tugging on the truth. It soothes the beast, but only temporarily until it realizes its being fed lies. When your subconscious gets ahold of this problem, it starts to invade your dreams. When I dream about David, I wake up and the rest of my day is ruined. It is filled with the dream of what we had and what could have been. Thankfully I don't dream about him often, as I'd never leave my bed. But when I do, he is all I think about. He consumes my thoughts and all I want is for him to walk through the door, hold me tightly, and tell me that there will never be a moment our lives will be spent away from one another ever again.
