[SONY XPERIA 1ii REVIEW]
Sony. It’s the company that builds the sensors for almost half the world’s smartphones, and it makes nearly half of all mirrorless cameras sold - including the camera I use to shoot every MrMobile video. It’s also the company that for years has failed to capitalize on these strengths in its mobile division. In preparing for this video I went back and watched seven years of my own Sony smartphone reviews, from my days at Pocketnow to last year’s Xperia 1 video. They all say pretty much the same thing: Sony’s phones are very good, even great at points, but they’re too expensive, and not always for the right reasons.
Flash forward to 2020, and the price tag on the Xperia 1ii (pronounced "Xperia 1 Mark II") reads like a cruel joke. At a penny shy of $1200 unlocked, this sequel is a full 26% pricier than its predecessor, and a cursory glance at its familiar form factor (now drained of all its fun color, at least in the US) fails to reveal why. The answer lies mainly beneath its three camera lenses, which encapsulate a camera system that’s focused almost exclusively on a very specific type of professional photographer: the type with the need for speed.

  • Yet another crisp review from Mr. Mobile. I love how Sony has designed this phone almost as much as I hate the MSRP. However, there were a couple of missed opportunities in this review. While discussing "auto mode", photos from the Apple universe would have been nice for comparison. The other missed opportunity is with regards to battery management. The Xperia 1ii has battery-protection capability that transfers most of the charge to the device during heavy use while charging. This prevents generation of unnecessary heat and stress - promoting battery longevity. Hope these are included in the next review / for Xperia Pro. Love your reviews - kudos to you, Mr. Mobile!

I have to say Mobiles are fantastic nowadays it's quite exciting to see what the can pack into a small package. I am a Canon user at heart but have dabbled into Sony and I totally agree that the software is good but I don't have the same love for it than I do with Canon. I'm still using a Huawei Mate 20 pro(still a great phone and camera) but was in the market for a new one and thinking about this one. • For all intents and purposes this is a compact phone. To understand why let's think about how screen size is measured: diagonally. Old phones had a much squarer aspect ratio of 16:9, whereas this one has a super wide aspect ratio of 21:9, what this means is that if you took an old 5 inch smartphone with large bezels and just filled the bezels in with screen like you see on modern phones, you'd basically end up with a 6 inch screen and a 19:9 or 20:9 aspect ratio. Now if you kept the phone the same width but made it slightly longer to get to 21:9 then now you have that 6.5 inch diagonal screen, but it's still the same width as the old 5 inch screen. For reference, I ran the numbers and a 5 inch 16:9 screen is 2.45 inches wide while this 6.5 inch 21.9 screen is 2.53 inches wide, only a tiny difference.

      @CockatooDude@CockatooDude3 жыл бұрын

I only carry my camera when I leave my house with the intention of shooting photos, and it's really sad when I I come across a photo worthy scene but all I have is my Note9 (which is still a beastly phone, but not for photos). Not very helpful, I know. But there are some things to consider: do you want one that is upright or flat (or will that depend on where your locating a charger - maybe you want more than one?..), if upright; do you want one that can still charge in landscape as well as portrait? If you're going for a fast charge make sure you pair it with a suitable high-wattage brick (not sure what the Sony one is, didn't even take the brick from the box yet! I did notice it was USB-C though), does it need to be portable? I have one charger that has 3 pads @ 1A each and two 2.4A USB's, but it works off an included adapter and the cable is very short - so, great for my desk but not great for somewhere there isn't power close to your desired location.
