Having added my bored out 1380cc A series engine I did my best to set up the jetting on my Weber DCOE, let's see how well i did and how much better a proper set up on a rolling road can achieve!
Jack. Can i recommend you ditch the filter gauze on the ram pipes and put a nice cold air filter box with a good quality filter (K&N etc) installed. Gauze is famous for neither filtering or flowing. It will be costing hp and dust that can wear your engine prematurely will be getting in. If you read David Vizards book on tuning the A-series you will see what i mean. He is the A series God.
That was my immediate thought when I saw it. If you add up the width of each of the wires in the gauze, you'll see just how much of the available "Throat" area is being obstructed, for absolutely no benefit whatsoever!
If 45, med do nice trumpet.....a bit more power, and torque
Finally, a #27 video containing good news! :)
Yeah, I’m shocked!
I really like Frog Eye Sprites , nice to see that for a change mate .
I tune into the disaster channel and guess what - NO disasters!! 😅😅
Don’t say it!!
@@Number27 😂😂😂
Jack was fast becoming a high cost HubNut! ;-)
😅😅😅
I'm hooked on all your video's......you are so good, a natural on camera....fun to watch, and empathize with!!.....You need your own TV show.....alongside Wheeler Dealer!!
So glad to see the potholes down south are as bad as they are in Glasgow!
Nice little gain. Well done! As the driver of a 600kg Citroën 2CV, with 29 bhp, the prospect of 100 bhp is the stuff of fantasy.
In my experience, a 1959, 100bhp frogeye is the ideal vehicle in which to turn up to the vaccination centre. Special treatment guaranteed with smiles all around and easy access (no roof!). Enjoy these cold days Jack and Fred. Keep these videos coming
It's great to see you driving a car, of your own, without anything breaking! Made my day
Richard is a lovely young chap, nice to see him on the channel again as he knows his stuff. Glad everything went ok with Fred.
Yay!!! You’ve had a good car day experience for once!!!! Pleased for you Jack.... 😂👍
Absolutely love this channel! So much respect for everything you are trying to do, and driving that car in that weather is just 😎
Thanks buddy, much appreciate!!
I love seeing Fred. They are such wonderfully fun cars.
Nice to have a positive result, well done.
A pure little car, simple and easy to use!! No electronics, no driver aids just pure seat of the pants fun. 90 odd ‘real’ bhp in something that weighs less than the interior of a modern car is bloody great!! Summer fun ahead..😇
Great that you had filmed the talk after the dyno runs about emulsion tubes and jetting. Nice to see the graph and get the sence of changes in the driveability of the engine. When i will get my 205 on the road with the twin weber setup a rolling road tune is the first place i will drive to. I realy enjoy your videos! 👍🏼
Outstanding!! I love your bugeye! More on this car please!
Good to see Fred 👀Jack ! with that 100bhp I bet he's loads of fun! lovely looking car bud and another cracking video 😉
Great video Jack! Now I have to get out to the garage and get working on mine....
Brilliant. 100HP of outright fun. Roll on the summer.
Love those little frog eye sprites. Such cool cars and you have made this one workable on today's roads.👍
Really pleased to see at least one of your cars putting a smile on your face after all the trials and tribulations with the influenzo.
As you know I only started watching your channel with the Ferrari project. I always look frward to new content and i am a massive fan of British cars. Soon my GT6 will come out when the weather is a bit better. Cheers from Belgium
That start made me laugh Good video and it sounded revier on the way home Cool car
Great you have more 'pep'! Frogeye looks so good!
Nice one .I had a 68 mini moke with 1275 .great fun Cheers..
Hi Jack. YIPPEE. Very Happy to see The Old Girl Back In The Road. Love the Sound of the Weber Carbs. Stay Safe My Friend. Cheers Carlyle
That is a beautiful car.
More videos on the Sprite please :)
I got 10hp from a rolling road session awhile back in a Kent engined Caterham. Well worth doing every few years !
Lovely to hear such a nice old fashioned engine sound coming from that car. Love the fact that you take on these challenges and upgrade these modern classics and classic cars. Really interesting stuff.
Glad you’re enjoying it, thanks for watching buddy!
@@Number27 You're welcome. As I said, this format is great, keep it up!
Nice one Jack 👍.
Good to see you smiling jack, hopefully this was post 'head hassle '......
Lovely Frogeye and excellent dyno result. Mine's a Midget 1500 stage 2, bored out, fast road cams, bigger SU carbs etc. Always been too scared to dyno it for fear of disappointment!
Great vid, really useful to see the AFR gauge on the two dyno runs. You can see it's a bit richer on the 2nd run.
Nothing wrong with a well sorted A series. Beautiful little car and with lots of smiles. What's not to like even on a cold grey day.
Thanks for setting my Siri off telling me the temperature where I am......😂
😄😄😄😄
Excellent!
Back when i had my Mk 1 Sprite in the 1970`s it was modified with a 1098cc. One of the best cars i have owned but sadly i tried to modify to a Modsports racer and failed..Sold it in the end for £40 as a rolling shell after a struggle !!! Best drive was a long journey down to Dorset for a holiday. running 80 mph (?} or off the clock with the top down. Your engine at the time was so exotic to obtain.. "Don`t get me wrong it is no ball of fire".. You have been spoilt matey lol
Great stuff! The Frog I ran for 15 years (sold last year) made 92 bhp from its Peter May 1293 engine. A bit boggy below 3K but after that it'd spool round to 7K whilst sounding epic. Loved it.
They're really great fun cars. I've owned mine since 1967 it used to be a highly modified road/club racer but its now 100% standard. Personally I think that they're much better cars like this, however each to his own.
Nice one mate. I bloody love this little car. Roll on summer :)
Hope you have a great summer too Ewan!!
The smile says it all.
Thought I was subscribed to the masochist channel all these months, at least until today. Good job with the sprite!
Love this ickle car 😍
The Weber "off throttle splutter" is one of the things I like most about my Alfetta GTV (twin 45mm Webers). Snap Crackle Pop. And 100% authentic.
Great to see the frog on road and positive session for you. Did they say why there was lot wave in curves at top end ?
Not bad for 1380 cc a series. Great little cars.
Thanks for a bit of good news for a change!
So glad something has gone right for you! That little car will be brilliant on a warm summer evening 👌🌈
I remember me doing this with my Alfa’s, it was a lot of fun.
Bloody hell, this is probably quicker than my mk 7 Gti!
Errrm... maybe from 0-10mph!!
After Ferrari head wrangling and Lotus frame de-bondoing, an hour and a half top down ride at three degrees sounds like a piece of cake, lol!
That car can only make you smile. Great vlog. Any 308 leads? I was hoping ratarossa would have a spare for for you
Nice Car, Nice Project but you can keep the 3 Degrees, top down driving. I Own a 1992 Ford Capri Convertible XR2 Turbo. But even in 15 Degrees you would NOT catch me driving it with the Hood Down. It's 25° plus before I even think about it..! I came from the Old Country in the 80's to get away from Temp's like that. So now even 15° is Nippy to me Now..! Roll on 30/35° Days and the lid will be Down for Sure..!! Great Video. Great car. Green with Envy. ( barring the Weather..!) Cheers kim in Oz 😎
I gave up on this channel as impending financial disaster was as inevitable as an 18 month old toddler wandering around the edge of a swimming pool about to fall in, then HOORAY! something looked like it was going to be a good decision at last and good value for money with smiles all round.
I here for the ups and downs of Jacks channel. These are not disasters. It happens to each of us. This is real life. And life isn't perfect. None of us are.
Yeah... sorry Quinn.. I am actually perfect 🙂🤣🤣🤣
Nice. Would have expected 90 hp. Got that in my 1340cc GTM with stage 2 head and hif 44. Your Sprite sounds great.
That's a very respectable output Fred! I think Hammonds MGB on Top Gear was half that 😆
You have my sympathies - we Imp owners get that kind of HP from just 998cc.
60% of the weight of my R50 Mini, with 10 more horsepower???? How is that not hysterical fun??? Nice work!
You got yourself a new daily driver...as all the others are out for service 😬😂 It’s a very cool car, no electronics, no hp, just pure fun ! Congratulations !!!
And no roof🤣🤣👍🇬🇧
after working on these a series engines for nearly 40 years be it in a minis or sprites etc playing with numerous engine and gearbox combinations I would have guided the customer down the super charging path. It never ceases to amaze me how much time and money people spend on building these engines and have disappointing results, even with the combination that's seen here 90hp and the tyres is mediocre at best. Sure it's not an absolute slug and I'm sure he 's keeping a tally on the budget but if you have a chat with what MED can do for you over in the UK I think your eyebrow would raise! I'm over in Australia and we have miles and miles of long straight roads where you can drop the hammer and unless your starting at 150hp your going to have VERY angry customers! Good luck and I'm sure you'll enjoy the car, cheers
Im 14,15 this year and im thinking about when i buy my first car, is a classic q good choice as i love old British race cars
@Bercilak de hautdesert Thank you for th3 info, and that's pretty epic too
Flipping heck, I’ve worked it out - those pyjamas are your jinx 😂 joking apart this is a nice clean result - hopefully you have the wind in your sales now to sort the others
😄😄 poor PJs!!
Everyone needs a break Jack, nice to see you’re having at least one in your otherwise tumultuous car situation at present ...lovely sprite BTW..👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Joe! I do love Fred!!
Hey Jack, I'm doing my part in watching all of the ads per your request. Cheers!;)
Brilliant thanks chap!!
....I cannot bring myself to do it personally, so I play them on my phone let the ads roll......then watch it later on full blockage.
that surprised me, i didn't know these Austins were rear-wheel drive.... hope you managed to source ahead for the 308 it's a shame to see it stuck in the garage.. especially now the summers coming.
I wish your videos were longer Jack! Your Sprite must be quite fast, I remember my first car was a Renault 5, 1 litre TC which was around 60hp, weighed a ton and it was great! Best wishes
Thank Ian!! Yep it’s quick enough!!
100 bhp from an A series well done. Used to have A Mini 1380 ,731 cam, 12G940 head went very well! Years ago we always had road tune on a Crypton tuner -remember those? Very few garages have them now because moderns are pre set with modern electronics.Pity really .However acid which produces smiles for you and for viewers
Roll error "acid" should read vid .shorthand on par interupting
Da Jack i really like this car :)
Great to see you on the road and not n the garage. Is Fred the only runner right now? Any word on a new head for Influenzo? Is it time to sell the Elise for parts? And the Alfa?
Fred and Alfa only runners! Progress on the head.. though some more news there as decided to go a bit further..
My 1st car. Pretty sure they were originally 948cc but mine had an 1098cc ( wow ! ) very responsive to drive but of course fell to bits within a short time. Fond memories though
I go on 25% transmission loss on an inline set up so its more than 100 at the crank, david visard years back did a simple demo with a 2.0 pinto in a cortina rated at 100 standard and it made 75 at the wheels
I was tempted to ask why Fred was strapped down, then had a "Eureka" moment.... Is it because the last frog hopped off? 🤣🤣🤣 Great to actually see one of your fleet working at last 👍
🤣🤣 thanks buddy!!
Great video, Jack. Fred is looking good. Nerdy question: do you know what make your steering wheel is? Might look good in the Giulia...
Thank you buddy..!! It’s a Les Leston.. surely some kind of vintage momo would be more appropriate for the Alfa!!
Great results! I didn’t quite follow what they adjusted on your engine. I’m more familiar with dyno tuning FI Challengers (go figure). So what did they adjust? I assume timing and fuel...
Just fuel.. the main jets which work from 2000 rpm upwards!
Given a choice - I would prefer having the white "Frog-eye" Sprite over the Ferrari you are currently working... !00 bhp is enough for loads of fun!!
Or a normal S1 Elise. All of the Ferrari's features, less than the hassle the 308 has
A lot of us agree with you on that one👍🇬🇧
You deserve a bit of luck👍
Epic. We need to compare it to the mx5 must be similar bhp / tonne ?
Would guess so buddy!
No ball of fire? Looked fairly quick to me!
I imagine being open and that close to the road it must feel like double the horsepower
I'm sorry I didn't pick up every thing that was done to it in the video, during the dyno run you changed the carburettors jets and the mix air/petrol to obtain the extra hp and torque ?
If it manages perhaps 110bhp and is 750kg with driver that's close to 150bhp per tonne. Respectable numbers. Your average modern Mazda MX5 is certainly no better in the power to weight stakes, except this has skinny tyres and will no doubt have enough to slide about on demand!
Haha Siri going off everywhere 😂😂😂
Still running windows XP? I hope that computer isn't connected to the internet lol
Awesome! Weber 40 or 45?
That sound is glorious! My dear you need gloves in this weather!
Great news Jack,. How does it compare to driving "Gaps" ?
Quite similar I’d say but that was so long ago I can’t remember..
Yours looks way more powerful according to the dyno. Gaps engine was about 92 at the flywheel if I remember correctly.
Odd question, would a car on carbs have big power differences between winter and summer, due to the ambient temp?
You’d probably have to re-tune it to make the most of the change in air density, but I suspect, it wouldn’t make a big enough difference for it to be worthwhile, especially here in the UK where we don’t get a very big range in temperatures.
@@emmajacobs5575 In the UK, cars like these go better on damp days.
My guess is you attract a load of old farts to videos like this? I'm an old fart and my hearing is crap (gradually getting worse), the audio is substandard and my understanding of it is even more substandard. Your voice is sharper than most which relieves my difficulties a fair bit.
Do you have a top for Fred? My midget is quite cozy with the top up.
I do but hate it!! Drafty, horrible cream coloured monstrosity!! Never used it
That car has such a nice face : D
Ah Fred 🐸
😍😍😍
Please how much is a Rolling Road tune as one of my cars needs this. Please
Depends on where you take it and how long they need! £200 sh
@@Number27 sounds great to get the jets sorted as otherwise it is a lottery
Drop a k24 in it. Nice little sprite mate :)
Number 27 with an atom symbol, as a logo. Hmmm. Is that a reference to cobalt? If so, why? Just curious.
Yea it is!! The car that started the channel, my 964 was originally Cobal blue!!
I had one of those. You could put NASA rocket fuel in a Sprite and it will still give you 80 HP. That's what they do and that's what they should do. You can change the brakes to discs however but just leave the rest alone.
Why do you think the power curve was oscillating past 5k RPM? I guess it could be ignition...
If it has points they may be floating a bit at those revs. Electronic should be better. a Cheap mod now but possibly Aldon/Pertronix when this engine was built, if it does have electronic.
@@delukxy You are probably correct - feels like another 7-10 bhp is being lost here - worth an upgrade.
Is upgrading from .95L to 1.3L the European equivalent of an LS swap?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 yes!!
