I love how the drivers remain stopped until the lights go off, thats how it should be but here in the USA they will race the gates or go immediately prior gates going up with lights still flashing.
The blue signs also say that. Idk if they also have that in the USA.

You might see a blue sign under a dutch crossbuck it says "WACHT tot het rode licht geofoofd is er kan nog een trein komen".
it means: WAIT until the red light is turned off, another train may come.

I love how people at Dutch railway crossings wait for the lights to stop flashing instead of waiting for the gates to start rising. I wish people did that everywhere.
In The Netherlands it is obligated to wait for the red light. The blue signs are saying that too.

Or else you get stranded in front of a train after getting locked in by the gates, now closing again.
Which is rather hard at this particular crossing though, as it only features one track. It's also rather hard to get stranded on a closed off crossing as only very few crossings in the Netherlands feature full barriers.

i think the best system for this is to have the crossing activate alarm when the train hits a certain point or the train automatically communicates via radio signal to a receiver on the crossing that activates it. But another option is the the train driver rings the nearest singal himself

They really do go overkill with the crossings for such a small train. Its always best to have the highest amount of safety however.

I can see some similarities with US grade crossings.
That's logical as Dutch crossings are derived from a US model from (I think) GRS. When tests were held, completely American types of crossing systems were just painted black, but almost everything was completely identical (we also had a sign stating how many tracks the crossing featured and a sign 'Stop bij rood light' (stop on red light) ). Eventually the crossing systems were adapted to Dutch standards and I think we started to make them in license eventually. The 'Nederlandse Machinefabriek Alkmaar' (Dutch Machinefactory Alkmaar) made the gate-systems for years.
