Airlines Uncovered: Backstage at Qatar Airways Operations

A rare behind-the-scenes airline operation at Qatar Airways Operation Center (QROC) to see how the crew reports and prepares for their flight. A team of professionals performs flight watch and makes critical decisions to ensure smooth operation of the airline.
At 6am in the early morning, it is full of action at Qatar Airways Operation Center (QROC). Thousands of Qatar Airways pilots and cabin crew depart from here for their flights. All Qatar Airways crew checked in here at the building before their flight. I went behind the scenes to see how the crew got briefed before operating their flight. The pilot will meet their flying partner at the pilot briefing area. The cabin crew will meet their team member at the designated briefing room and go through the flight details. A grooming check is also conducted during the briefing. Then, I joined the crew on the crew bus out to the aircraft on the ramp.
There were about 100 departures in the busy morning hours at Hamad International Airport. I filmed many of the departures before going back to the Qatar Airways Operation Center. I visited the Integrated Operation Control Center (IOCC) where a team of professionals performed flight watch and made critical decisions to ensure the smooth operation of the airline. The supervisor on duty shared about the weather issue and possible flight disruptions. The commercial team looked after re-booking and re-accommodating affected passengers. The maintenance team deals with “Aircraft On Ground” (AOG) issues. I was given a rare behind-the-scenes on airline operations.

  • After many discussions and assumptions, I’m putting a disclaimer here: No, I don’t get paid for this kind of content. In fact, many airlines like to work with me, because I don’t charge them anything. Qatar Airways has provided access for me but nothing more. No airline is perfect, I am showing a different perspective here. Remember, many hard-working airline employees love their airline, and they deserve more mention and credit!

According to The Airline Index 2023 released by Bounce, Qatar Airways have score 7,5 the third position after Japan Airline (1st) and Singapore Airline (2nd) This is my parameter, so what SAM said is true. If you say this airline is good, it means it's good and if you say it is bad, it means bad... Even you get paid or not it doesn't matter to me.. I looked at it based on the data and SAM just explain...tks..🙏 Success for you...👍🙏

    • A neighbour and friend of mine had a really horrible and terrible experience with Qatar Airways. She was one of the Australian women forced to deplaned so that their vaginas can be checked if they recently gave birth. Why? The stupid Qatar authorities found an abandoned baby dumped in the airport and they decided to search women who happened to just had a stopover in Doha. They were made to spread their legs and a torch/ flashlight was used to search their vaginas like a mechanic doing a routine car service. Unfortunately, for women it is not routine at all but a degrading and humiliating experience. To date, no apology, no compensation and even reaching out to those victims from the Qatari government and Qatar Airways. This is partly the reason when Qatar Airways decided to apply to increase their flight frequencies to Australia was DENIED. My family and I will never ever fly Qatar Airways when we go to Europe for our annual holidays.

    • That's because they don't have enough Qataris to crew the airline. When you fly British Airways, or Air France, you're going to get predominately British or French crew, because those countries have 10s of millions of people. They have a vast labour pool to draw from. Qatar does not, which is why it draws mainly international crew.

  • This is amazing. I flew as a pilot for American Airlines for 31 years and never in my career did we do anything remotely like this routine, even at the big bases like DFW and ORD. Everyone was in one operations area in most places, although we did have separate pilot and F/A ops at JFK due to space limitations. But full crew briefings like this? Not in my career! What we did of that happened on the airplane just before the pax boarded ( I expected to see the pilots at Qatar's briefings m - a bit surprised that they were absent). Loaner uniforms? Come to think of it, there was one time when I was new where a loaner pair of pants would have come in handy. Unbeknownst to me, I had stepped too close to the exhaust pipe when I was loading my Fiat convertible on a sub-freezing morning with the engine already running. The exhaust melted a small hole in the polyester pants (yes, the company-supplied uniform featured polyester back in 1977 - it wasn't just for the disco!). Fortunately, no one noticed and it was a turn-around to a domestic location so I hid on the flight deck most of the time! But this cast-of-thousands crew briefing routine does resemble what we did in the Air Force, in the Military Airlift Command. Our C-5 crew could number as many as a dozen, and we did have a full crew briefing, anchored by the Aircraft Commander. Qatar runs a very professional operation. Small wonder they were eager for you to see it and pass it along to us!

  • Thank you Sam for this video and all others of course, I really appreciate your content, especially the one showing Qatar Airways operations. It's my dream company and I'm not surprised about the fact that all the flights are always full at this point. The majority loves to travel with Qatar Airways and so do I. Can wait to watch your upcoming video 💜

  • Sam. As always. Congrats. The best airliner or airline review online channel by far. Your video posts get better and better. You have the knowledge, understanding and respect for what you do that is required and is so appreciated by your followers and also recognized by the industry. This current Backstage series should be shown to all passengers before the safety video so they appreciate what a wonder is is to be in the air! Keep up the great work.
