  • An other way to use this car efficient: drive in electric mode if you are in town, and sport (combustion) mode when you are at the high way. Configure you sport mode settings all to comfort (except the engine) and you will have a combustion engine that is quick enough without asking too much fuel.

  • It's enjoyable working out how to get the best out of this beast. Zero charge start and a 280-mile journey last week got me 44mpg. Using battery control set at 100% on a 50-mile journey gave 26 mpg - a massive hit to efficiency. I don't find the adaptive mode all that clever: when a destination's in the sat nav it still seems to want to use up all the juice too fast to leave enough for town driving at the end. I'm going to try the suggestion below of battery control set at [just enough for electric at the destination town] - that way I can just go back to CarPlay instead of bothering with the horrible BMW map. I can't charge at home but there's a free charger 10 mins walk away so I use that some days. My commute to work is 31 miles each way over a 1500-foot pass from sea level start, and no charging at work. When I leave home with a full charge by the time I get back at night I'm usually on 68-75 mpg which I'm really happy with - the whole 62 miles is twisty (inefficient but fun) small roads. Freewheeling down the hill gets me around +2-6 miles back each way. This commute has only 3 or 4 places to safely pass other cars so the boost gets used every day ;) Best hybrid I've driven, BMW make it so easy to choose how you want to drive.

  • Using Battery Control to charge the battery to 100% would be a silly thing to do. Using the petrol engine for battery charging is the least efficient use of petrol and denies you the benefits of having a hybrid. For very long trips I start with a battery charged from the cable and set the battery control to somewhere in the range of 30% to 50% depending on how much I want to have in reserves for the final few kilometers before I reach my destination. That way the car will best manage energy flow from both petrol and battery to minimise overall fuel consumption for the trip. As the battery level descends from 100% it will prioritise use of electricity until it reaches the set level and then it will start to prioritise use of petrol. It will still maintain battery level via regenerative braking, etc, rather than using the petrol engine for battery charging. Also, it's best to avoid fully depleting the battery as that will accelerate the aging/degredation of the battery.

    • Thanks for your input, that helps explain things. I am thinking about getting one, and electric only mode would be great for around town, but twice a week I drive ~160miles round trip with no opportunity to charge half way. What kind of MPG can I expect with this with your 30-50% battery settings? Thanks in advance!

      @Blandified@Blandified2 жыл бұрын
    • @@Blandified I have been able to achieve around 5.5ltrs/100kms on a longer trip than that (300+kms) with deliberately not charging the battery before I started. That is with normal highway traffic using cruise control set for 110km/hr and with light traffic. Starting off with a charged battery will obviously improve that figure.

  • I have a 330e and I get 24 miles range displayed from a full charge not the advertised 36 miles. From that 24 miles displayed I think I get about 18 miles of electric only range. BMW say this is because I only do short journeys. Also if I precondition the car it takes it from the battery even if it is plugged in and this drops the displayed electric range to around 17 miles. So on a full charge with preconditioning I get around 12 miles electric range, a third of the advertised 36 miles.

    • Doesn't sound encouraging: Especially if you precondition it with the plug it should increase ? So even if cold weather eats a lot, with departure time set it should be 100% charged AND pre-conditioned as I understand it ?

      @klasfard@klasfard3 жыл бұрын
    • @@klasfard The only way to pre-condition the car and have 100% charged is, as suggested by youtuber Mazman, to set the departure time to 30 minutes before your actual departure time to give the battery time to recharge after the pre-conditioning. I have not tried this but it should work.

      @clivebrooks8207@clivebrooks82073 жыл бұрын
    • Me too, cant find any explanation for this. All BMW literature says it takes the precondition power from mains but it obviously doesn't!

      @stanoreilly5951@stanoreilly59513 жыл бұрын
    • @@stanoreilly5951 I have now got my car and also experience lots less range when pre conditioning, even if setting the time more than 30 min before, and I am plugged in. However, as I understand it, since I am only able to set it to around 6-7 A when charging via mains, this is not enough. Once I get my charging station and is able to use 16 A I hope that the pre condition will be able to take all of the power via mains. I get around 25-35 km of range (40-56 miles) displayed now when it's cold. It has been around 0C to minus 12 C around here lately. And I find that the range displayed is fairly accurate, but the pre-condition eats around 5 km - so if I have 30 km and the start pre condtion I end up with around 25 km, which seems pretty accurate for the driving I have done

      @klasfard@klasfard3 жыл бұрын
  • You will use two times more fuel or even more when charging the battery. It is not at all “slightly more”. On the highway the car consumes around 6l per 100 km if you don’t charge. If you start charging, it is immediately 9 to 12 l per 100.

      @EliteCayds@EliteCayds3 жыл бұрын
    • It usually uses battery for climatization, or helps the petrol engine by decreasing the load on it to get a good MPG. You can shuffle trough the BC where it shows you the battery consumption. You will see that when you accelerate, you use more gas but also more electricity. In order to preserve your battery, you need to activate the battery saving mode. I have the F30 330e and the only way to preserve battery is by activating the SAVE mode. The problem with this mode is that it also charges the battery to 90% if it's lower, and it's using a lot of fuel to do so.

The 330e car uses regenerative energy to recoup some power, but it also can use the engine to charge the battery i.e the battery control button allows you to charge the battery up to 100%. The other point you are missing is that hybrids are about efficiency. Most of my journeys are short and for those I only use the electric motor. Over a month I do 300 miles and use about 4 gallons of fuel and about 180KWh of electricity in a car that will do 0-60 in under 6 seconds and can cover a long trip without having to stop for hours to charge !
