Chris Tarrant embarks on his first train in Myanamar (aka Burma) en route to Mandalay. With limited funds the Myanamar government has tried to improve the vast railway network that was built by the British in the days of the Raj. Unfortunately upgrades to this stretch of line have gone horribly wrong…

  • When 1980's, this situation like in indonesia. But we luck, all the rails installed very smooth. Now, we already have high speed train from Jakarta - Bandung. This is the first high speed train in south-east asian. We proud of it

  • I remember watching this! My dad & I couldn't stop hooting with laughter. I think it was because several family members worked on the railways, imaging them in Chris' place, knowing how grumpy - in a comedic way, not malicious - they would be!

  • YDM-4 locomotive from India, Myanmar brought it as 2nd hand from India. These Metre gauge YDM-4 locos were the workhorse of Erstwhile Indian railways IR. As a result of IR's decision to go broad gauge thru out its n/w these workhorses were sold to Myanmar, Cambodia, tanzania, vietnam. At present these locomotives are rare pieces in IR's loco inventory.

    @ecko_lmtd@ecko_lmtd5 жыл бұрын
    • See, in the western countries, speed limits are not the same as what the trains can withstand. They are well below the threshold of accidents. In countries like Myanmar, it's more about the practicality of it. I am pretty sure that the engineers would slow down if it was that risky. I mean, I am from India. And here, they let the railways run even on a heavy monsoon day when the tracks are not visible (due to water). As far as I know, in the U.K., they stop services even with a few leaves on the tracks.

      @AbhishekSanyalTGV@AbhishekSanyalTGV3 жыл бұрын
    • @@AbhishekSanyalTGV They do that because the trains run relatively quickly and relatively close together, so they need to be able to stop in a set distance when the need arises. Relatively recently there was an accident where two trains collided because one couldn't stop at a red signal due to leaves on the line.

  • Upgrading didn't go horribly wrong, it's how rail tracks are replacing everywhere in the world. At first old rails and sleepers are removed and new rail/sleepers sections are put to the rail bed and bolted or welded together without bothering about vertical alignment. At this time the trains can already run again but at very slow speed. THEN the tracks get ballasted and adjusted. The repair probably was delayed on the intermediate stage due to the lack of money.

    @al-uw4ln@al-uw4ln4 жыл бұрын
    • Yes this is true, they should add ballast. They also should at least buy a tamping machine to adjust the tracks afterwards.

    • They replaced the wooden sleepers with concrete ones but ran out of ballast, so the rails moved up and down as the train passed over!

      @brackenboy6321@brackenboy63215 жыл бұрын
    • When there's no ballast, tampers can't tamp (level/true) the rails. Of course, this presumes they have tampers.

  • Good Grief! I cannot believe it! But Chris wouldn't tell fibs! And I saw camera footage. I have to believe it. Chiropractors must make a good living along this railway line, in towns and villages. How about the kidneys with all that bouncing about? When I was just a bit of a boy I'm sure I would have loved the experience. But now, in the Autumn of my life, I'll just enjoy it on KZhead! Thank You!
